List Mgmt. 2022 Trade Thread - Part III

North Melbourne will strongly consider splitting one of its top-two selections for multiple picks or players if it can secure a trade for Jason Horne-Francis for pick two.
And the move could bring St Kilda hard nut Hunter Clark back into the Roos’ frame late in the trade period next week despite the Saints’ desire to keep him.

St Kilda has said it wants to hold on to Clark, 23, but are considering ways to bring in another early draft pick after missing out on the signature of Collingwood’s Jordan De Goey.

There is a left-field option to make a play for high-priced defender Nick Haynes from GWS Giants if the salary dump also comes attached with a first-round draft pick.

Haynes is up for grabs if a new club covers his $800,000-plus price tag but there had not been any big moves for him over the first week of the trade period.

Hunter Clark is still of interest to North Melbourne.

Hunter Clark is still of interest to North Melbourne.
The Kangaroos are working hard to secure a trade for Horne-Francis as part of a transfer involving West Coast and Port Adelaide which could land the Roos West Coast’s pick two.

But the mooted three-way deal could become a four-way exchange if the Roos can engage GWS on a swap for either pick one or pick two (potentially on-traded from West Coast).

GWS, which holds picks 3, 12, 15, 18 and 19, has already held talks with clubs about bundling up some of those choices for an earlier pick higher up the order.

It means the Roos could offer up pick one or two for multiple selections at the back end of the first round and then try and tempt St Kilda to off-load Clark for one of them.

The Saints’ hard nut midfielder considered a trade despite having one more year to run on his contract and was buoyed by the arrival of Lenny Hayes as midfield coach at St Kilda.

The investigation into North Melbourne coach Alastair Clarkson about the treatment of First Nations players during his time at Hawthorn had also clouded the move.

How long is Haynes’ contract for?
He is a proven AFL player, and if we can get him with a first round pick I’d like to do that and also hang onto Clark.

Trading Clark for a mid first rounder is not really a win/ win for me. Rather get it via Haynes, but it would depend on contract length and how much we would have to pay.

Edit: Reading further, I see it’s 2 years. They should be very doable surely?

Haynes & 15 makes a lot more sense than taking on Bowes salary.
Haynes when fit is a star.
Haynes was a gun a year or two ago like Whitfield, hard to know if they are past their best or they just checked out because they hated Leon Cameron.

Buyer beware on some of these GWS players but you can get a bargain like we got with Jack Steele, he was younger than Haynes and Whitfield though.

I reckon you underrated what a quality half back can do then

Not sure we'll be able to find a better midfield option at 13
Yeah, I tend to agree. If you're not confident you can get a player who's an improvement with the pick you trade for, then I don't understand why you'd do it.

Keeping Clark is much less of a gamble than trading him for a pick that's outside the top 10.

I think that is the best we could expect.

Not sure I'd take it and run though. Unless there us something very toxic about Clark we don't know about.

Chances of finding a better prospect at 13 is slim IMO. Better off seeing what he can do when he actually has a good run with injury ie 2020
This.

Yep, something will fall our way at 10 if we stay there. It is a good spot to be. That has no relevance to trading Clark for 15 (16) though

Here is what PMBangers gave us last week. Order has changed a bit since then.

That pick gets you well out of that 2nd tier of players. Thats why I also wouldn't be looking at trading down and splitting our first

Keeler at 15 is highly possible.

Im not happy with the recruiting team this off season. We clearly aren't contenders...why aren't we trying to increase our draft hand?? Someone please tell me who we should pick with pick 9 in the draft?

O’Halloran worth a punt for some bargain gambling

It would be doable but there is nothing real that says he is for sale or that GWS would throw in a pick as well.

We take anything less than a top ten for Clark, we have panicked and not stuck to what we said about Clark i.e ' It has to be overs or we keep him'.
Ditch him for 15 and it will be appalling.
Keep him and bring in Haynes and #15.
Done!

Not a huge Haynes fan but could be handy if we can get him back to his previous form and if he comes with 15 even better. Would happily do Clark for 12. Love his skill set but just not sure he is going to take that next step. Especially given how prone to getting hurt he is.
That’s a stretch.
Total accidental injuries. No one is prone to getting the injuries he did.

What will be?

The post the discussion was around was puck 15

North would be mad not to take the GWS offer. Then they lose JHF but gain Wardlaw, Sheezel and H.Clark in the first round. That's a big win for them in my eyes. Nets us 12(13) which puts us in range of some highly touted players.

Or perhaps we couple 9 + 28 (pick 4) and move up the pecking order ourselves. Grab Gold Coasts pick 5. McKenzie is then ours.

I think this can play out so many ways.

2019 we won 9 games
2020 we won 10 games Finals 6th
2021 we won 10 games 10th
2020 we won 11 games 10th

2022 we have 5 or 6 x A graders
Steele
Marshall
Wilkie
Sinclair
King
Perhaps Crouch
A graders are the players who will win their position week in week out

We need more A graders and there are arguably more A graders up for this trade period than in recent years

Taranto
Degoey
Dunkley
Grundy
Jackson
Hopper
Whitfield
Haynes
Mitchell
We are instantly a better team with any of these players

And a plethora of former 1st round picks
Henry
Bruhn
Horne-francis
Bowes
Clark

Other clubs are adding not only high end talent but high draft picks
Brisbane
Dunkley
Ashcroft
Fletcher
And have traded a B grade player in Mcstay
Geelong
Bowes
Henry
Bruhn
pick 7 Jyhe Clark

So far we have Cordy and pick 32

I would have thought with our president saying he is sick of mediocrity its actions not words etc we would have come out firing this trade period.

Perhaps, and my thoughts are we thought we had degoey signed
I think it's highly likely he may have used our interest to leverage collingwood and judging by the comments of his manager it seems very likely
But did we have a plan B if we didn't get him???
And is our 2022 trading strategy on the back foot this trade period?

There are still 6 days left for this trade period still plenty of time to increase our draft position and acquire some A grade talent
Easy to say "come out and trade for A graders", but we are either trading away our 1st round picks or losing another a grader!
But yeah let's just get all these A graders onto our list without losing any of our current assets...cmon mate

Out: Clark Long
In: Pick 9*, Haynes, Pick 15^, Pick 32#

* McKenzie, Humphrey, Phillipou
^ Hollands, Hotton, Keeler, Jefferson
# Hayes, Gruzewski, Long

Would absolutely take that.
Aren’t you missing a pick? #28

Best part would be that we could wait until draft night and make the call.

Absolutely no rush.

I'd do 15 for Haynes and his gargantuan salary before the AFL finds some way to close down these salary dump deals. Hell, chuck in Whitfield and another pick why don't ya?

I wouldn't want to many aging stars - most are lucky to be playing good football after 28 let alone 30.
and if they are any good they will be playing for the cats.

Aren’t you missing a pick? #28
I suppose so, but I was working from a “pick 9 and the deals” premise.

Edited it for the theoretical “1st for Clark to NM pick too”.

Hayes goes at 10 instead of 28
