What has happened in the past is the past.

It shouldn't impact current or future thinking.

Different admin, different coaches, different players in a different time....

If there's a better option e.g. Don Pyke - you take it.
Don Pyke (primarily known for power ranger stance and pre season camps) would be a big no.

If you don't learn from what happened in the past you make the same mistakes in the future.

Back Voss in. Give him the best support possible (ironically Pyke would be suited to this role) .

Voss is not a tinkerer. If anything, the antithesis of ....

His conservative attitude towards game plan and selection is the main reason we won't make finals (short of a minor miracle).

To not make finals is a major, major fail.

And in that event, his role must be heavily scrutinised and other options reviewed.
That would be true in some ways and at some times.
But if its part of a development curve that sends us high into next year then I can't agree.

So that brings us back to this game and we need to beat Freo.
Whats happened before and what happens after is irelevant for the moment.
One week at a time.

He wasn't responsible for the camp and prior to that, his record was phenomenal.

Voss has shown pretty much zip in almost 2 years that he has what it takes to win a flag, let alone get us into finals.

No brainer frankly.

Don’t know how it translates to various rankings & votes, but JSOS consistently did little things that aren’t captured by stats but influential to the team’s success. The guy regularly busts his gut, but I was still pleasantly surprised (I’m a fan but agreed with him being dropped to the VFL). Happy for him to retain his spot.

Talk about having blue run through your veins. Can’t fault his desire.

We hired a bloke who was literally known as Crazy Vossy. So far on a similar trajectory to his Brisbane stint a decade ago.

This line of thinking is contradictory to what Carlton is doing right now.

A win v freo in Perth and hopefully one v port or coll coming up and we’re looking like this season is just the reversal of last year. Pity we couldn’t knock off one of ess or Syd otherwise we’d be in the 8 next week.
We wouldn’t be in the 8 as geelong play north and you would assume they win .. Adelaide play Essendon which is good for us but we are coming .. I can feel it

There is absolutely zero chance that Nic Newman will be dropped. Was in AA form before his injury and has stood up and beaten elite forwards all year. Not every player has to be an athlete there will always be room for quality footballers, especially those who kick well like Newman.

Not sure that Vossy's record was that bad at the lions. Took over a team that was losing most of their premiership players from 2001 - 2003 in 2006 when Lethal had had enough. Took them to the second week of finals in his first year.

Took a punt on Fev to try and refresh the list which backfired and led to a few know it all's calling him crazy Vossy. Team deteriorated as the nucleus retired and left to be replaced by Justin Leppitsch (now seen as a coaching genius) who won well less than half the games at the helm as Vossy.

Put his head down as an assistant at Port for a long period of time to try and get himself a second chance. Deserves it. Handles himself well, speaks well. Hoping that he is given the chance to be a success.

He was the head coach when the camp happened. Are we to believe that you think that a head coach has no responsibility for organising a pre season camps?

Even worse, for years afterwards he commented that the camp had all been hunky dory and that there was nothing to see here.

Learning curves. Reckon we'd be right to say Voss himself is on one too. Which implies he's making mistakes despite the wish to say it's only one group or the other (coaches v players).

Balance is a difficult thing to find sometimes. In saying that. The Freo games have become a bit of a rivalry recently with some heat in them haven't they? Wouldn't be surprised if the team comes out really unbalanced and very fired up. Competition for spots is hot now (finally) so that should bring some extra good out too

There was a brilliant post ages ago from a Brisbane poster detailing vossys time including much more about why he was called crazy Vossy and it wasn't really close to just the Fev thing. Was a good post and wonder if the mods remember it, I certainly don't remember where it was written. Basically a really good outline with some inside info etc.

I would assume that an anonymous internet post by itself is hardly a compelling case. I went to a golf day where Leigh matthews was guest speaker and I asked him specifically (prior to us appointing Voss) about Voss' coaching ability and performance at the lions.

Lethal was very complimentary about Voss, said he was an excellent coach and the victim of an ageing successful list (and putting too much faith in Fev) and that he would be an ideal candidate for any role in the future.

Pretty comfortable in lethals judgement.

All the back and forth about game plan and players in and out one thing I will say and it surprises me when I looked it up on the weekend is we are 4th for scores against and defending between the arcs well (except kick ins)
So I give credit to Voss for the fact after one of our losses everyone was concerned with our ball movement and in the presser he blew up about defence to the shock of everyone and most on this board .. happy to ride this out let it unfold and our mindset around team defence has done a complete 180 from end last year till now - scoring will come -- collingwood ball movement comes from them being the best defensive unit in the competition (even though Melbourne have arguably the best backline )
Should suffocate Fremantle this week ..

This definitely puts a positive spin on what was a failed stint at Brisbane. 5 years is plenty of time for a good coach to change the trajectory of a club and to put their own positive spin on the list and culture. He left the club in a worse position than when he arrived.

Voss has improved a heap and I hope he continues to do so. I just think it’s funny to write someone like Pyke off for his past whilst praising Voss at the same time.

I have taken this thread off topic so I’m happy to leave it there :)
