A few players who will be playing for their finals lives tomorrow. With Cripps and Docherty to return big games are needed from the following:
Fogarty
Dow
Hewett
Cincotta
Hollands
Cuningham
Cotterell
Fisher

That’s about a third of the list. Plus a full game into the legs of Walsh and Cerra. Any injury now will hurt opportunities to run out on the G in their first ever final for a lot of these players.
Dogs should get up so GWS with everything to play for, it’s great for us. We will up against a side throwing everything at us, they are good across all lines, have genuine stars & play a great brand of attacking footy.
Perform u keep your spot (it’s well deserved) anything less- well it’s too bad, so sad.
The measure needs to be overall output & crunch time performance- stepping up when we need it but bringing it all game long.
A couple good moments won’t cut it. Really excited to see who steps up

Strong side but a bit of a query around the ruck situation. Hopefully TDK can ruck strongly for the majority of the game with some chop outs from a few guys. Like that we have gone smaller and quicker. Not unhappy that Pitto is out, as long term, I'm an advocate for the TDK/JSOS combo. It just provides us with more flexibility and scoring power.

Simple for us. Don't change the formula regardless of what GWS's situation is. Go hard and rehearse for two weeks time. Do that and we most likely come away with a win. The momentum must be maintained. The messaging from Vossy would suggest that is how we're going to go about it.

I think Voss is keen to test the one ruck setup after testing the 4 talls last week. Not ideal having nobody to chop out TDK but at the same time it's not ideal playing 2 specialist ruckman who don't contribute anywhere else on the ground.

None of our other main competitors in September are doing that , not even Melbourne who have 2 AA ruckman on their list. If we go in with the 4 talls we will be conceding run to every other team when the main reason we turned our season around was ground level pressure.

The ruck thing could be what sends us to the next level.

We have had issues trying to hide DeKoning but more so Pittonet when not rucking. DeKoning forward, we're playing with 5.5 forwards. Pittonet forward and we're playing with 5 forwards. We go back to having 6 forwards and a ruckman sized second ruck who can get around the ground and take a mark. You offer that to any team and they take it.

As for McKay, he's used to having a good key defender sticking to him like glue, in the ruck he gets a ruckman. So we can create a mismatch here. IMO he could be lethal as we come out of defence.

They could plan for that and send a defender up into the middle but this opens them up in defence, that opens the door for the 6 forwards.

One or two elite tall forwards at all time. 4 or 5 red hot form small/medium forwards at all time. A stacked quick midfield with the two rotations in fogarty and cuningham.

We are going into this game very quick and pretty good. Minus two of our best of course. If we turn up we belt GWS.

Walsh, Cerra and Dow. Its a different look for us. If they get a hold of them and we start running it forward out of stoppages we will kick a big score.

On the other side, no Cripps or Docherty is huge. Both have done a lot of heavy lifting and the match fitness of Cerra, McGovern and Walsh is questionable.

If McKay gives us a good 20 ninutes in the ruck. DeKoning who loves being first ruck gets going. Our midfield starts running and our pressure stays elite, Carlton by 30-50 points.

I look at our team, there's no weak links. A lot of guys playing for their place in the side. Last week wasn't a loss but it was damn close to it, the coach and players would not be happy with that, we'd like to better that performance.

I like your thinking. Begs the question - who gives Tom a chop out? I wonder if Acres could play the JSOS role? Almost identical height and weight. Doesn't shirk a contest either.

Durdin in for Motlop (illness)
That huge, Motlop would be filthy (& obviously feeling like crap anyway) he would not want that door even slightly ajar. Spot now open, Fog, Cunners, Durds let’s see who deserves it.
Mots walks straight back in for anything less than 2-3 goals & a ripping performance

My worry is the ruck position. Not sure TDK is ready for virtual 100% ruck time especially against a big unit like Briggs. At least they don't have a particularly strong backup ruck but Keeffe is a better backup ruck than anyone we have in our team. It has always been my view you need 3 ruck options in the team, but 2 can be virtually backup only. Your number 1 will need some degree of chop-out no matter how fit they are, and if they are their main backup go down you need someone to give a bit of chop-out even if only for a few minutes in a Shaun Grigg style role. Ideally you want you first backup to be good enough to compete in the ruck if the main man goes down early, but they need to justify their place in the side in some other way eg capable forward (eg Harry - but do we want to ruck him even part time?, JSOS) back (eg Young) or onball (perhaps JSOS). The problem we have is none of our rucks good enough to have rucking most of the game are much chop elsewhere - I had hoped TDK's forward work could improve but it doesn't seem to be. Our developing rucks might give is something down the track - not Mirkov who seems to me to be first ruck or bust, but O'Keeffe who shows a bit forward, and Lemmey who looks like he might have something as a swingman-cum-relief ruck, but they are both a fair way off. But there is no doubt everyone is looking for the forward-second ruck Luke Jackson tyoe, sadly they are thin on the ground

Durdins first game in the new look Carlton. He's hard, quick and a good pressure player. Hope his shoulder holds up. Think he will go well.

Motlop has been good so we may well miss him. Depends how well we pick up the slack.

Cuningham and Fogarty will have plenty on picking up from Cripps, Docherty and Motlop being out. Expect plenty of midfield minutes.

Hope not, Acres has been doing his job to a bloody high standard, has been great on first receive & gets everywhere he’s needed. There’s a really good connection between Acres & Dow - which has launched a lot of damaging attacks, think that gets even better with Cerra in the side providing the ball as well. Don’t want him deviating from what he’s been doing so well.

What do we want?
  • Hard fought game where we run away with it half way through the third.
  • All players demonstrate strong form, particularly our Ins.
  • No injuries.
  • Carlton's pressure being excellent.
  • McKay in a new ruck role described as "scary".
  • Carlton far far too quick and too good in the contests.
  • More head scratching over team selection as too many playing too well to leave out.

what a delightful way to start the weekend............

it's ok if harry boots more goals than charlie, so long as charlie sews up the coleman.........

Corey Durdin at his best in a fast moving, attacking Carlton side would be very very dangerous. Glad we have gone with him and not Ed as we often have. Durdin will be desperate to try and break into the team. His best is really sharp so we can only hope he steps up.

It's crazy how all of a sudden we seem to have such good depth.

Durds has had a tough year with injury but started this season ahead of Motlop and Fogarty in the pecking order.

I'm confident we have a home final wrapped up so it's a great game to get him back into the team, along with the other players returning from injury. Good for the team and don't think it will hurt Motlop to have the extra rest, although he might be worried about his spot in the team.

Competition in all spots of the ground...we have few 'locks' and that's a good thing. Keeps the guys motivated.

Will be interesting to see the psyche of the team if we have a home final secured before our game and GWS need to win to play finals.

Think we will play at a good intensity given we want to be in good form heading into the finals and there is competition for spots.

We are playing 4 guys coming back from reasonably long injuries though and last week the team were a bit off, so will be interesting to see if we can bring the intensity or look a bit flat.
