Where are we with with Burgos contract. I am hopeful he has been signed on for next year and beyond but it was something Nicks said a month or two ago at a press conference that worried me when he mentioned that the soft cap was not enough to keep everyone - good people at clubs like ours.

Burgo does not always stay for long periods of time at any club and could be in demand in AFL and football circles here and overseas? Anyone with intel here. We may not be able to pay him enough to keep him at the club,

Some good feedback on Hombsch from the young defenders in the SANFL Good to hear.

At the time he came to us it was reported he was coming back for family.

If we continue on this trajectory of steady improvement then I'm happy to extend him. But that trajectory is pointing to playing finals next year. I'd be wanting to make sure we're on pace for that around the mid season bye next year and extend him then. I wouldn't be signing him over summer and risking everything collapsing in a heap shortly after. Look what happened with Sanderson - he was contracted to the end of 2014, we rushed into extending him at the end of 2013 (after dropping from a prelim final to 11th, no less) until the end of 2016. Then we ended up sacking him at the end of 2014 anyway after finishing 10th.

Nicks is in no danger of getting sacked this year, but nor are we going so well that we're in any danger of having anyone poach him. So there's absolutely no reason to extend his contract prematurely.

Every chance we plateau next year - progress is rarely linea (although ours has been over the past 4 years). A two year extension probably and if it goes pear shaped then you have the 6 month payout clause

After he spilt up with his wife, she and kids moved back to Adelaide.

He was barely able to see them during covid, which seemed to play a major part in his decision (basically being able to spend time with his kids)

He's also been actively involved in the planning and design around the fitness and rehab facilities at the new site

I get the feeling he'll be around for the next couple of years at least

On another note, there has been talk of late of the clubs pushing and the AFL considering a bigger increase in soft cap spend

Nicks will extended over the summer - he won’t be coaching for his career. Particularly if we win 2 or 3 of our remaining games

I hope not. Best to keep our options open. I'm still not sold on him. The fact that it needed injuries for him to finally play some other players when clearly some of our players had been run into the ground shows you he still has a lot to learn. On match day he also struggles to make moves when they need to take place imo. He has rebuilt the team pretty well but whether he can take us to a flag is debatable.

RE: Soft Cap spend does it have to be itemised like say x$ on Coaches, x$ on medical/rehab/fitness, x$ on Admin etc or is it a lump sum spend how you want?
There's "minimum expenditure" rules around medical and player welfare and then there's "deductions" you can make once you go above the minimum spend if you go into areas like having Player Development Managers, club psychologists, Indigenous Welfare Managers/Officers and any other mental health programs/training.

I believe there are clubs who without a major increase in the soft cap want these items removed completely from the soft cap spend as player welfare should be one area clubs are allowed to maximize their spend in with no concerns on how it impacts the soft cap or if it causes them to be taxed extra. Soft cap is only going up $250K, so not a massive increase to bring in more resources if you weren't already spending money there.

Outside of that I believe you're free to use the $ how you want.

Have a read of the Collingwood post I quoted in the Nicks thread! All teams do similar things.

Good thing you're not in charge then!

Agreed. This board can say whatever it likes, but it's clear that the club and the wider footy industry think Nicks has made serious improvements, and he deserves to keep leading the club.

Yup, especially as the AFL industry has trended towards being very patient with coaches who aren't in charge of train wrecks.

I think it's a pretty safe expectation that Nicks will get an extension this offseason. There seems enough club-wide buy in at the moment.

I don't think that's for any other reason than the AFL have made it cost prohibitive to bail early on a coach.

Not necessarily, though it's certainly hurt the poorer clubs. If anything, it's likely just coinicdental and probably a response to Carlton poaching Malthouse and Richmond/Geelong becoming dynasties with Thompson/Hardwick.

The thing if a team sacked a coach, then proceeds to win a flag a year or two after, it'll make the idea attractive regardless of cost.

The whole aregument about poaching him is dubious at best. Who tried to poach Longmire, Harwick, Chris Scott, etc etc when they had built their teams and were genuine contenders... They wouldn't have left anyway.

Leaving the contact talks too late begs media speculation and is destabilising. I'd expect a contract done over summer or early in the year to avoid it getting messy later.

I think we could see a trend switch from coaches being sacked after they don't make finals, to coaches being sacked after they do but underperform in finals.

It's usually pretty difficult to say whether a rebuilding team is going well or failing in the early stages. Could very well be the list and not the coach. Yes there are some really horrible coaches (David Noble, Mark Neeld) but most super crappy teams have crappy lists.

What you don't want are the coaches that can take a team to finals but keep failing or falling. Like Leon Cameron at GWS. That's how you burn lists and that's where I think we'll see more coach changes

Chris Fagan
Ken Hinkley

Both getting toward the end of their chances albeit I think Port have a fairly rejuvenated list and will be able to contend for a while

Not so the Lions

Maybe if Collingwood wins a flag this year, seeing for that to switch a coach needs to come in with a side that hasn't already broken through and win a flag quickly.

On a football admin side, a Port/GWS situation is a whole lot more palatable than what happened at Carlton.

Burgess is back in Adelaide for family reasons, so would hope we re-sign him very soon.

Good comments about Hombsch & past 2 weeks is proof enough.

More like do we have any news about anyone...this thread has been barren for any meaningful rumours

Hardly any across the league. Very quiet but most teams still in finals contention - will probably fire up again in a few weeks

You'd have to think no contract or strong reports of being in negotiations is a sign he's more than likely out. And if he stays its because interest pulled out and he's more than likely settled for something less than expected.

I mean there's really no reason otherwise for them not to be deep in negotiations and nearing agreement - its been long enough to let the dust settle on injury disappointment then finalise the contract by now if the intent is/was to stay.

I know Twomey has been reporting he's now more expected to stay but nothing saying he is close to signing/finalising discussions etc

If we keep doedee.. especially if its on anything more than minimum chips, which it wont be of course.. then we‘re idiots.

worrell does everything doedee does and more.. for less money.

we keep doedee and then we have to play one of a player like doedee, MM, worrell or hinge etc in the sanfl.. we just cant fit them all in..

and if doedee is on the highest wage of all of them then he wont be the one playing sanfl.. it’ll be a guy like worrell..

because.. you know.. age and experience matters most to these idiots.
