Have we moved on from the "If Crouch leaves" to the "if McAdam leaves" stage of Sloane complaints?

If Sloane ISN'T on a veteran list, let's start having a conversation.

it's irrelevant bevause Tex qualifies, so he should be on it. Sloane costs us a list spot, him being the designated veteran would just be smoke and mirrors to placate the stupid.

Personally I would trade him, which is ruthless but he probably has a small amount of value still at 30 heading into next season.

I think we could benefit greatly from retaining Crouch on a cheaper salary for a few years, and trading out Laird with his larger salary and maybe gaining a pick

The club would never, ever do this though

I posted this a few times earlier in the year, didn't get much traction.

Honestly, who gives a f*ck. Push another player out to the rookie list. There's a million things we can do.

The constant constant Sloane whinging is so ******* boring. We thought they should delist him, they wanted a year's more leadership, can we just move the * on? It's so tedious. There's zero salary cap issues, and we can keep all of McAdam, Doedee and Crouch if we choose, plus take the two or three picks we want to take.

his extension has nothing to do with leadership. It's the only excuse they can offer publicly.

average AFL player salary is 370k ish isnt it. I cant imagine we are offering BELOW average salary but a short contract (2 maybe 3 years) on a very moderate level (400-450k ish) seems like a low ball offer that isnt totally offensive (including not offering any contract at all to a player who has done an ACL playing for your club which hardly supports a healthy culture IMO) but is basically saying go and out and find a better offer and we wish you well. Your position is covered and you arent an A Grader to start with...

The issue with 2 years at $400k is you're eff3ctively paying $800k for 2025, year 1 off an ACL. Unfortunately he just needs to wear a very low deal for 2 years and hope he can cash in for 2-3 after that. Or sign long term around $300k/year with bonuses for the security.

Crouch didn't need to reinvent himself, he just needed to get back to his 2017 form.

Do you think he’s improved massively?? Or the players around him have made him look better?? I believe both, when we have prime Smith and Seedsman at half back/ wing and Crouch hit them at full pace, he looked amazing. Now we have Soligo, Hinge, Smith and others around him, he’s looking good again. I have noticed though that he always looks forward now instead of looks backwards and with so many other options, he doesn’t have to handball 1 metre to ROB

I just can’t see how 2024/1s can come into play for pick 4.

Gold Coast are around 2,000 points short this year if they cough up pick 4 and their 3 x Academy players go where they are expected too.

Pick 15 would only give them around 1,100 points, leaving them a significant Round 1 deficit next season. This would push back their 2024/1, potentially up to 8-10 spots depending on where they finish.

Depending on what else GC do during the trade period, any team that bids for 4 may need to cough up far more points than the 2,034 attached to this pick.

——————————

Quick question for the draft gurus - do Gold Coast need to have the available list spots to be able to use picks to match? E.g. they currently have 9 picks with points attached, if they were looking at utilising all of them, do they need 9 x list spots available on draft night?
20 and 26 are 1640 points.

Once the draft starts, they can trade for multiple extra picks to use for points, because list spots don't apply once the draft begins.

They'll be fine gathering points because the draft won't go beyond pick 50 according to most reports and late picks will be very available.

Any trade for pick 4 will need to include a future pick, because they won't need to split it just for points.

Why wouldnt gold coast consider a 2024 1st?..

Be stupid of them not to..

If I was them I would be swapping their pick 4 for

-crows 2024 1st,
-the north 2nd,
-Get the crows to deal the suns second with someone else for points and give that to the suns.
-And every pick the crows have in this latter half of this years draft (which is about 4 or 5 other picks)..

Thus they push a first rounder into next year bolstering their draft hand next year..

And pick up a shiteload of picks this year for points..

Crows take pick 4 and 9 to the draft this year and nothing else.. they really havent got anymore spare list spots anyways…

We definitely whiffed on his development. I vividly remember a game where he was so preoccupied by his opponent he had his back turned 180 degrees to the ruckman at the centre bounce. Multiple times.

He was so overly concerned about his man it completely stopped him hunting the ball. Then we criticised and dropped him for not finding the footy. That's terrible coaching. Set Chayce back years, he's lucky to have come good with the damage we did to his confidence.

Can't help Berry had the same treatment. Was given a defensive role and performed it amazingly. Problem is now he's trying to find the ball himself and is lost. At least he was at the start of the year, sounds like he's finding some form in the ressies.

true but has been talk both this year and last that’s it’s now a focus for them.

perhaps similar to our real stepped up focus on bringing SA boys home in recent years like Dawson, Rankine and decent cracks at Day and Redman this year ie perhaps it’s a newish focus for both clubs to really hone in on locals to avoid go home factor

I think most non VIC clubs need to set the foundation of their team to be locals. We went back to that as we started a deep rebuild of the list and I think they will do the same. I reckon you want at least 7 out of your top 10 to be locals so your core has no reason to leave , will usually stay for a bit under market value

Just to add to that - our last GF list (and the build up too) had as a top ten

Danger
Sloane
Charlie
McGovern
Lever
Jenkins
Betts (well established in Vic prior)
Lynch
Crouch
Crouch
Talia
Hartigan

With only Walker, Smith, Jacobs, Brown as SA boys (claiming Walker!!)

That’s just off the top of my head but that’s a lot of players to manage go home factor or not particularly locked into state factor

He was more effective than ROB in the ruck in the last game.

ROB had several poor games during the year,,, yet in none of them did we give Thilthorpe more time in the ruck.

If ROB is playing well & Thilthorpe is quiet, why not try him off a wing or a different role.

Similarly when Rankine, Rachele or Pedlar were having a quiet game, why didn't we give them some time on ball or off a wing? Our coaches rarely adjust player roles when things are not working.

Depends on what is happening in other parts of the field though. If the midfield is working or the guy on the wing is playing well you probably aren’t going to move them out of position to get the other player into the game

In terms of Thilthorpe - he has a tough position. Realistically he is the 4th option in the forward begin Rex Fog and Ranks so rarely gets targeted and is generally playing deep for the get out kick or decoy to take another tall defend away from Tex double team

However he just needs to make sure every time the ball comes near him he is in beast mode and that is not happening enough at this stage.

Having said that he still showed signs of development this year - his mark around the ground was excellent (not so much up forward) and he still was a big factor in a few games. He just needs to find that consistency - a bit like Fog in his first few years

For good reason, what an utterly stupid suggestion. Laird is an A grade inside midfielder, he can coexist with Crouch. You also do realise our midfield performed very well for the majority of the season in many key areas? Keep Sloane out and it will be just fine. Our midfield was good enough this year to be making top 6, they are not the reason we missed finals.

Chayce is tough as nails. Does not flinch.
Toughness is definitely something Chayce does not lack.

His problem was confidence and game awareness. And funnily enough as his confidence came back, so did his game awareness.

The best news is he's still only 23. Still has an eternity of football left in him

His clearance work was impressive this year in spurts, I still think a starting midfielder is his long term position, especially now that he gets involved in games for longer periods. He’s a genuine goal kicking option too, a far more reliable option than even Dawson around goal. Becomes a very valuable player for us if he can average 20+disposals, 3-4 clearances and a goal a game.

I still remember a SANFL game against sturt in 2022 where we were getting slaughtered in the middle. Then at half time we moved Jones into the middle and he was the most dominant player on the park for the rest of the night.

Such a weak minded statement. You do realise we were the 5th worst team for scores against from clearances right? Our midfield is slower than a bunch of snails stuck in quicksand. No defensive action around clearance whatsoever.
