Clayton Oliver has told Melbourne he wants to stay and Melbourne is open to Oliver staying as a potential trade out de-escalates.
Crisis meetings in the past 48 hours, which included an update to the board at a meeting on Wednesday night, have detailed the positions of the club and Oliver and his management.

Those meetings included coach Simon Goodwin, chief executive Gary Pert and general manager of football performance Alan Richardson.

The club wants the three-time best and fairest winner to remain, but wants a commitment from Oliver to improve his professionalism and to continue to address some significant mental health concerns.

The professionalism component reared its head this season after a series of personal and injury issues confronted the 25-year-old.

The mental health issues have been on-going and the club has worked tirelessly to help Oliver in recent seasons.

In turn, Oliver has indicated he is prepared to address and where he can improve in those areas.

Oliver arrived late for his exit meeting with Goodwin in the post-season in a condition that concerned Goodwin.

The club has put its arm around Oliver many times and wants Oliver to understand that the best relationships work both ways.

He is a much-loved figure, but the Demons in a sense have put their foot down, and told him he has to meet the expectations or look elsewhere.

It’s a powerful stance from the club as it sets about addressing a season which bombed out with successive losses in September.

However, talks of trade have diminished in the past 24 hours.

The bombshell revelations that clubs believe Oliver is gettable still remains, although the willingness of both parties to work towards a solution is encouraging.

Rival clubs have become more aware in recent days of Oliver challenges and are becoming less confident a trade will occur.

AFL Trade 2023: The latest on Clayton Oliver’s future in wake of Melbourne crisis meetings

The wild Clayton Oliver trade speculation is in overdrive – but Melbourne meetings in the past 48 hours have detailed the positions of the club and Oliver and his management.

Rival clubs have become more aware in recent days of Oliver challenges and are becoming less confident a trade will occur.

What started out as a potential blockbuster two-first round trade has subsided with Oliver’s value seemingly dropping.

His manager Nick Gieschen has been crucial in being a calming influence for both parties over the past 48 hours.

Oliver’s teammates are also playing a significant role.

Oliver moved in with skipper Max Gawn and his pregnant wife Jess in the post-season.

In essence, the club will need to take a leap of faith with their gun on-baller.

Oliver can say all he wants about meeting standards but only time will tell if a commitment from him will bear fruit.

It’s not known if an announcement on Oliver will be made at the best and fairest on Friday night, but the club hopes it has more clarity by the end of the weekend.

Could absolutely see them ask for Fog or Thilthorpe. In fact they should.

I think pick 9 is. Given and probably F1 as well

No way both players but it probably is about where this starts. Whether our seconds help them get another player who knows

Would you do 9,F1 and Thilthorpe?

12 months ago no way but I’m concerned Thriller is training with Brayden Cook… I think he will probably become an excellent player but to say there aren’t little niggles of concern would be lying.

I’m shocked to say now that I would consider it.

edit: sorry not the whole deal but perhaps just perhaps I may think about Thriller if it was a monster tournament sizes Sailfish we were landing.

Who said the money was being generated by the Greyhounds?
One of my mates in the game raised an eyebrow at how high one of their dividends were.

Open secret in the industry how "profitable" their dishlickers are...

Being Port though, the rug is big enough.

So NewsCorp are the only ones that know what happened at the Melbourne crisis meetings last night? No one else has reported anything like that. I’ve always thought it’s more likely he stays there, but this just seems like an outlet trying to be the first to report.

This is the kind of good news press in response to a crisis that Adelaide just don’t get from AFL media.

You have Thilthorpe as the steak knives in that proposal, he is worth a first rounder easily by himself. If he did ask for a trade now we would be asking at least one first rounder, probably more.

I know it is all speculation as it wont happen, but if we included TT in any such deal it would be 9 and TT only, no need for our F1.

Talks of trade only surfaced in a major way within the last 24 hours, doesn’t seem like this article actually quotes anyone either.

Fun to chat about, but these things just don't happen to us.
I think Oliver is using the threat of leaving to force Melbourne to get better fitness people in.

They obviously mishandled his hamstring injuries this year.

Doesn't want that again.

Funny how multiple afl personalities and news outlets are saying Clarry will be traded and most likely to the Crows, and people are acting like its BS.

Now a single article comes out saying Clarry is staying at Melb and everyone is all "well it was fun while it lasted"

Yes they are unexpectedly “profitable” aren’t they.

There are a few reasons such an archaic “sport” carries on, and none are related to the love of the animals.
