Limited footballer but if we lost Matho I would consider adding Ryan Clarke as a defensively minded midfielder in the DFA period as a break glass only.
Very average footballer.

We just need to improve the depth of our reserves for two years.

Hately is possibly an upgrade on Mathieson, purely because he is a much better runner.

Bonner or Bianco would be good half back or wing depth.
I agree with Hately but is a bit of a gamble, worth taking I think. Wouldn't be my first choice tho.

Bonner I'm liking more n more. Adds a bit of maturity and versatility. A mid that has played back, could be handy on the wing too. 191cms tall, 26yrs old, played 13 games this year so wasn't completely on the outer, 90 odd games so has some good experience. He's definitely my preferred top up.

Bianco is an interesting one. Got limited opportunity at the Pies, is purely a winger and we could use one I think. Has a fair bit of developing to do but comes from a good system. He could even be handy for a bit of inside info on the Pies.

We still haven't announced any delistings so we could end up with a cpl of spots open after the draft for DFA's in the rookie draft.

**** no! lol.

Of the delisted group for depth consideration. Tim O'Brien for versatile tall and Sam Simpson for on ball.

Well, the Lions got their main target Doedee early so no waiting till the last half hour of trading this year.
A little bored before i go for some exercise so had a look at last years Draft & Trade period.
What did all this achieve for players chosen in relation to actual AFL games played in 2023.

Players taken early in the draft are always going to get a game especially in the lower ranked teams.
So, in the chart below i broke the National Draft up into 6 groups. The National draft had 59 selections in 2022.
Also looked at the National Draft for the last 5 years only, as young players could move clubs during and after this period.
The chart is in time order starting with Free Agency. Figures extracted from draftguru

Great work, so reading this right there is GOLD in those late picks 41-59 and you're more likely to get a player there than the 21-40 range - on these statistics. Am I reading that right? (yes, trade, free agency and top 10 draft is where you want to be)

Looking at the KPP depth & in particular the key forward depth, we really are screwed if Eric & in particular Joe goes down, given I think you could perhaps play Gunston in Eric's role, but not Joe's given Eric & Gunston's inability to ruck.

I think we could do worse than look at a James Stewart / Tim O'Brien type, noting that whilst they're 29/30ish, they are only there to provide a bit of coverage should we lose someone, and the benefit with those types is they can play both ends.

We got lucky in that Joe & Eric played most (if not all) games this year, I'm not sure how comfortable I feel taking that gamble again.

Don't think Matho will be gone this season with no ready replacement. Maybe next season with Ashcroft and the academy players coming in. Good depth that's happy playing as depth is very hard to find.

At least we are making some trades
Being successful is boring. If we suck we could have all these picks given to us by the AFL to trade and win the trade period.

Ahh, the good old days.

This is what the big Melbourne clubs like Essendon do so well.

We probably don’t want it, Melbourne definitely don’t want it.
That’s the pick they got from Sydney for Grundy. They also got a future round 2 from Sydney. That pick would be more valuable to the Lions. Future 2 = done deal.
