Compare him to Crouch who we got as a free agent and was the same age as Gresham when traded - Crouch was chased by Cats , Tigers and Port.
They say we got him because we were the only club to offer him a 5 year contract.

Crouch was a Best a fairest medal winner for the Crows and career at the Crows is far superior to what Gresham has shown with us and Adelaide received draft pick number 23 as compensation.

Expecting a first round pick for Gresham - don't think so.

Crouch came at a discounted rate thanks to his little coke scandal.

He was offered $900k the season before by GC but was still contracted

Have had time to reflect on the Shiel deal.
In reality the RFA trade contract of say is $650k for Gresh and gets us end of rnd 1 comp pick 20.

Just imagine the Essendon players finding out that Gresh is being paid an extra 100k to help out StKilda. There would be some upset players saying well what about me getting more $$$ as he is being overpaid....it is not a good look for a new player coming into a club....so unlikely to happen.

Think the two transactions are separate. Gresh gets what he gets we match or get the compo.

Shiel is a salary dump..Dildoro says only way we can afford Gresh is that you take Shiel.

Saints we give you 20 for your 8..or wait and see if we can get something better elsewhere.

Haynes dump for pick 15 perhaps.

Ess Gres and 15 for Shiel less $1m SC and pick 8 otherwise 19 pick as 12 is not enough gap. Unless you get something that works with Zerk Thatcher from Port.

Stk Shiel plus $1m cap for 1 year and Haynes $900k for two years. Using the money we had set aside for DeGoey.

Then Doogs to Hawthorn Brockman and pick 49 to Freo and Henry to Saints....maybe with a pick swap.

Or Doogs and pick 12 for Geel pick 7

Or pick 15 and Gresh Compo to Geel for 7 or combo thereof.

Pick 7 or 8 with. Sanders
Pick 12 or 15 with...Murphy
Pick 20....Archie Roberts
Pick 31....Who knows

Buckle up trendsetter it is about to get interesting...who cares about the GF unless we are in it.

Like your thought process but Brockman is going to West Coast

Genuine question that no one can seem to actually understand

why are we (a) paying Gresham way overs to then even out the equation by losing Shiel and then (b) not only are we potentially going to pay some of Shiels salary, (c) we have arguably the most salary cap space in the competition.

Nothing makes sense and no matter which way you write it, it doesn't make sense if Essendon, perennially hard negotiators are just going to bend over and make a closely matched team even stronger for very little in return

I just don't get it and no one can explain not me why we're helping St.Kilda so much
Likely a lot of hoo-ha over nothing!
More then likely Essendon will get Gresham at a reasonable cost, Saints will get band 2 compo

He’s not actually that young, same age as Coffield. Still has his best years ahead of him for sure but not like he’s completely untried.

Not that young but still young nonetheless. I mean young in the sense he’s not a banged up bloke at the end of a long, physically draining career.

Anyway it’s all relative. Our whole coaching team is young in my reality 😉

Hope we match for that frankly.
If it was band 2 then that's end of first round, I think we'd take that. Band 3 is second round which we may match.

The issue with Gresh is he's just so limited as a player. I love that we're trying to milk everything we can out of the compo but at the end of the day he just isn't that good.

Im not going to reply to everyone's post so in a nut shell you think we want Gresham enough that we have to pay him enough to trigger band 1 otherwise you force us to trade and you get a pick no where near what band 1 would trigger anyway. And in another favour we should as a really friendly gesture pay Shiel's salary because St.Kilda are such upstanding citizens?

Hm.. starting to see what you guys see but somehow don't think Adrian Dodoro the master negotiator does anything remotely to this.

I just hope for everyones sake he stays at St.Kilda, just as your on the rise he wants to move because he thinks he is worth significantly more makes me think he is more concerned about the $$ than the success.
Yep…spot on!

Yeah he’s lost that zip since his injuries

I hear ya. Dustin Fletcher retiring was the moment where I suddenly got older than every afl player.

I was thinking if it went through,

Essendon lose Shiel and 28

and gain

Gresham and Howard pick

Saints lose Gresham and Howard

and gain

Shiel, 13(from the AFL) and 28

win/win?
From a player perspective St Kilda lose a goal kicking midfielder and full back and gain a 31 year old who doesn't get on the track.
Righto.
