Billings would've left for nothing next year anyway, either on the back of another injury riddled year where his value would've been zero, or as an UFA if he managed to produce a year worthy of another clubs interest. Highly doubt we would've extended his contract for anything worth staying for.

At least a F3 pick adds to our hand, particularly with mid season trades on the horizon for season 2024.

We also have a decade long history of drafting better with shit picks :moustache:

Billings had a pretty terrible development and we turned him in to a neurotic mess. I remember when we trained out at Seaford watching him doing a midfield drill and he won every contest that was in his area. I thought he showed more than any of a our regular mids. No-one training him was encouraging him or even seeing it as an area to start developing him in.

Our coaching has been sh*t since Ross left.

We wasted a decade

I don't blame the individual players as much as some here do.

Billings had a habit of playing far far better in his contract year. The most frustrating kind of player. Unfortunately his legacy will be one of frustration and unfulfilled potential. He was somewhat cursed by being sandwiched by two champion players in the draft, one of whom was taken afterwards and has become one of the best footballers of the last couple of decades. He also entered a football club filled to the brim with incompetency with very few development opportunities on offer. Personally, as brutal as it is, I don't think he was mentally switched on at an elite level. He would often seem overawed by the moment.

I'm not upset to see him go, but I am concerned about our non-existent depth next year. We are reliant on the players we selected last year to come on, and only one of them played a game. If we get injuries to key players, it may be a scary season.

I guess without seeing the actual cap room I wouldn't be too concerned about paying part of billings given there is a salary cap floor or even the structure of the deal over the next 2 years
Restructure and front end.

Only explanation for paying salary is to get something decent back or salary dumps like the pies.

This one is idiotic. I’d rather we kept him or traded him for pick 140 without paying his salary. This is shit.

I’ll go out on a limb but I believe billings, Gresham and coffield will all play good football next year. There might be quite a few who wonder why they didn’t do it with us and the answer will stiff be they did when they were fit.
True, all three can play...but even without injury they still didn't turn up very often. Coff had one quite good - not brilliant - year. Before that was very inconsistent. We can also cover for him. Gresh had some great moments, some good flashes, and was briefly consistent enough at performing those moments...but his disposal was poor and he could be selfish. He is our biggest loss out of the three, but he had done value & like Coff, we can cover him.
Billings...a seasons worth of okay/good games, two if which were very good...in 10 years. No...sorry, that's simply not good enough.

We can’t more injuries than this year. We had a third of our list unavailable at one point. Anything has to be an improvement on that.

Just had a Melbourne supporting employee text me and ask if I will pay him $200k to work for the opposition .

Sad times when Melbourne supporters are giving it to you.

Let him know he could walk as a free agent if he messaged me about it again.
Could be worse… Collingwood are paying a bloke to play at 2 different clubs…

This is not Lyon or SOS'SSSSS fault, no-one wanted him & Ross, last time we contracted them. I'II repeat it again, why on earth did we re-sign Billings on 500k per season? Now that is as monstrous as Roughead breaking Paton's leg.
The idea no one wanted him last time is something made up on this board.
He had offers from at least Port and Sydney but decided to stay.
