not sure I understand.. we have (30+4). +2 Cat B meaning 36 players.. we can have a max of 44 +2 Cat B ? We know that we will again have 2 Cat B rookies next year .. so we can have up to 46 players and we currently have 36? Is that right? Does that include MacRae?
I really like this post. Clubs can be coy all they want, but in the end their list spots tell the tale of how they will approach the draft period (DFA, ND, PSD, RD, SSP).

I think this is a little off (or the table is misleading) because I count 36 players currently on our list (including Macrae).

With a total of 44 players, it means we have 8 spots left.

STARTING POINT: 7, 8, 32, 47 + AC + LH + EP + Sandy Rookie

Some of my thoughts:

1. If we somehow get an additional pick in this year's draft, I'm unsure who misses out getting drafted (maybe EP?)

2. This doesn't give us much flexibility for DFAs or SSPs unless Crouch is truly buggered and can't get through preseason.

I think we have made a blunder keeping Crouch (or Jones) over an Olli Hotton who has struggled to get a run on but is young and talented - appears to clash with our overall strategy.

3. As much as I think we will commit to the planned Sandy Rookie, I think it really limits flexibility in our list management at this time of year. Opportunities arise!

The prime example would be signing Max Knobel as a DFA or in the RD, a great opportunity and list need, but now we don't have the space.

Anywho, this exercise has made me a but despondent about how our list is currently being managed, and hopefully after this entire period is over the strategy makes some sense to the average punter like me.
I think we can have 44 + 2 Cat B rookies? So 46 in total? We have McLellan and OConnel who I guess will stay there.
Does your 36 include the Cat B rookies? Do we actually have 10 spots.

I also doubt Crouch will play. Even if he is not cut from th elist due to his contract, we may put him on the LTI and pick up someone in the pre season period to replace his spot.

I think we all agree that the Sandringham commitment is a spanner in this years draft plan. But we’re in for a pound now.

As for Hotton I think he was up against it with young talent like Garcia and Hastie running around in the twos. And then we’ve got pick 7 & 8 just about to come in and stake their claims.

It’s a tough call for sure, but I don’t think it’s outrageous.

I am happy to see that St Kilda delistings are starting to become worthy of getting picked up by other clubs. It speaks to the emerging quality of our squad.

I would not be surprised to see Crouch either retire or put on the long term injury list before the season commences to free up a ninth spot.

Yes my understanding is that it’s 44 (senior and rookie combined) + 2 Cat Bs.

The list I provided includes Macrae.

HOWEVER Sharman is still listed as a Cat A as is Caminiti Heath Hall.

You would imagine Sharman needs to be elevated now.

Can someone please clarify how we take all those NGA players and all of our draft selections? Don’t we need to use draft picks to select our NGA players?

Jay Clark-

St Kilda has told clubs it is open to splitting one of its top-10 selections in this year’s draft as part of a strategy to capitalise on the depth in this year’s talent pool.
The Saints have picks seven and eight in this year’s draft and have indicated they could be interested in trading one of them for two picks later in the first round.

The two clubs best-placed to do a deal with the Saints are Richmond (which has 18, 20 and 23) and GWS Giants (15, 16 and 21).

It means the Saints could take a top-line midfielder at pick seven and then snare two players in the back-end of the first-round with its Josh Battle compensation selection.
It would be a bold call from the Saints but recruiters are excited about the level of talent on offer through the back end of the first-round.

The move would effectively see the Saints take three players potentially inside the top-20 of a draft scouts are calling the strongest in several years.

St Kilda may also pull the trigger on draft night, depending on what players are available at pick seven and eight and what deals the Giants and Tigers are prepared to complete.

Said it all along - would be silly if we weren't investigating the split.

Take 7 to the draft, get another 2 picks in the teens, 32 & 47 - bring it on.

The only appealing split would be the giants and only on draft night at the pick

Surely they will push for a combo of 15/16 and 21....
Christ you’d hope.

That 21 is an early second rounder In my eyes.

With 15/16 getting pushed back.

It’s a fair argument to say here is p8 + 32.

We will slide back to 15+16 but upgrade 32 to 21.

Anyway - plenty of options to hypothesise but ultimately it seems like the club was right yet again.

They will be able to land some great talents and they are in a great position in the draft.

Similar to their belief they would get band 1 for Battle.
what were they right about about?

Good post. Mainly because I agree 😄

Wow we have the list manager on BF. We had the Bulldogs list manager on during the trade telling us they would never accept pick 45 for Macrae as well.

Yep, I love this time of year. Everyone so sure that they may as well be the list mgr. that goes for everyone including here.

I know because I’m the list manager and I am going to offer the above.

After academy picks and bid matches is 21 that far from 32 anyway?

After academy picks and F/S bids:

1. Pick 32 will probably remain as pick 32 (3 bids matched with picks 27, 28 & 31).

2. Pick 21 will blow out to pick 24 after 3 bids are matched and no picks inside 21 are used to match those bids.

So in net terms, both picks will become 24 & 32.

25 and 33 if Marshall is matched before then. 34 if Ben Campo goes before then

The 44 include the CATB Rookies

We currently have 30 on the Senior List - 4 on the Rookie List and 2 CATB Rookies 36 in total

Leaving 8 spots to fill Crouch could be delisted meaning 9

I wouldn't split the pick unless you're going further up the draft order.

I wouldn't trade out into next year's draft unless there's some other magic going on with pick upgrades etc.

We need talent now not next year and by all accounts the depth ain't as good next year. It's a double hit.

So 7 and F1 for 2 on offer hey?

Still reckon 8, F1 & 47 for 2, F2 is our best outcome. Move F2 into the second round for an academy club (next year) for a F2 this year, Norths F2 with the new points index will be like gold for a GWS for example. Alternatively, Richmond can go into the future market with a very valuable asset (for the points chasers next year).

What would we prefer?

2, 7, 24 & 32
2, 15, 16 & 32

Of course 7 can still be diluted, but I'd much prefer to pick there.

I don’t think the Kangas can get a better offer really?

Even if Richmond swoop on a tall at 6, they get the next best at 7.

If they trade back into the teens, those top KPP will likely be gone with Melbourne at 9.
Rawlings said they would consider a small slide back. Obviously targeting Tauru.

Port getting 10 in the rumoured deal says North end up with multiple picks 11+.

Now things could change. But it doesn’t match up does it?

Well if north slide back and if all midfielders are taken up to our pick, Potentially just threaten to take OR take Tauru and split pick 8 or take Reid or Allen and offer a F1 to a club for a teens pick

Either way I recon we will have 3 first rounders this year.

Recon north can royally screw themselves over if they aren’t smart.
