I'm going out on a limb, going full gringo2011 and will say over a career Murphy Reid will be the best player in the draft.

A few people on a forum saying he is slow, or projecting as a potential small forward shouldn't cloud your own judgement- which it did mine.

How many people have actually focussed on his footy IQ, fend offs, ability to find time in traffic. He is often in a canter because he has more time than most. His kicking is good, handballing is elite, movement in close is elite, he should be the pairing to whoever is at 7.

As for the speed concerns, absolutely unfounded, his preseason testing had him going under 3 seconds for 20m!
Reid reminds me of the conundrum recruiters had with Steele Sidebottom back in his draft year…where does he fit?
We’ll, Sidebottom is a gun, playing over 300 games as an on baller/ winger

Replaces Webster

Doubt it, Im confident he will make it as a mid. We have to remember he has had injuries leading into the past two years and had a bad hamstring to finish his year. Being used as a tagger is just part of his development ala Steele, give him some continuity and experience and he will get there and become a very good mid IMO. He is an extremely driven kid, that thirst for sucess will propel him to get the best out of himself.

We have plenty of small/medium defenders without moving more midfielders back there.

Take it you haven’t listened to the audio.

His opinion was that Allan was the best prospect out of WA but that WA SA + Allies would have a poor draft crop overall and thus it wouldn’t be a super draft. However the vic kids are very good this year.

He directly compared Allan against those vic kids and said based on testing + attributes etc he would be a top 5 pick if he was part of that vic crop this year.

He didn’t say anything outlandish ie he should be pick 1. But in the middle to end of that top 10 hence his belief it’s either us or Melbourne who take him and he won’t make it to either WA side at 12+14

He said he will play early and he is a likely captain at AFL level.

He said he likes to keep a close eye on the trades and picks etc to work out where his boys would go and that he thinks Allan would fit in at those clubs.
Thats my point... its then up to extrapolation and becomes an experts opinion rather than first hand information

Windhager has his limitations which is why Ross uses him in a tagging role…good players take him to the footy
Or he's learning.
Even Steele used to tag originally.

SteeleSaints you beat me to it.

I think for those who are concerned about Allan are so because he seems to one rated on what he could be, rather than what he is right now.

I don’t think he’s proven himself to be a top 15-20 footballer in this draft but i think if everything goes right he could end up a top 5 player.

Im not set on any player, I can see the strengths and weakness with all who will be available at our picks You keep suggesting that the club shouldnt take Allan and grab proven midfielders, what other full time proven midfielders are going to the available to pick #8. Have you really had a look at how the draft is likely to fall?

For those who are unsure whether Windy has the craft to make it as a full-time mid, please re-watch the game against Collingwood earlier in the season.

He was dynamic, powerful and arguably one of our best on the night.

Untimely injuries have impacted his development, but I am adamant that he develops into a mid. As mentioned by others, the tagging development decision has worked for players like Steele etc.

Give him a clean run at it and the consistency will come.

We are arguably the weakest midfield infront of maybe only west coast and Richmond.

I wouldn’t put a heap of stock on one windy game or flashes of Clark for example.

It's one thing to say player X is reminiscent of player Y.
It's another thing to say that player X will be a 300 game champion like player Y, which becomes self misleading.
Lalor wont be LDU
Smillie won't be Cripps
Tauru won't be Roo
Reid won't be Sidebottom

100%. Stav, time for a lay down.

Windy’s trajectory is to be a permanent mid, he just won’t be a superstar mid

Best case he becomes a Brayshaw type

Worst case he becomes a winger

Somewhere in the middle he becomes the Rowbottom/Drew of our team..which I’ll be fine with

The tempter maybe if GWS offer 15,16 & 21 for & & 32

So we had 27 and exchanged for 32 and 45.

Now we are exchanging pick 8 & 32 for 15,16 & 21.

Can someone explain the reason behind this when we are being told its the strongest draft in years.

Just seems like a dilution of picks and we don't trust our ability to nail a top 10 pick.

Because it’s an even draft

Why take one player at 8 when you can get two of a similar or marginally less quality at 15&16 while upgrading 32 to 21 to have first dibs on a variety of KPPs

Trainor sliding, if true, will be music to our ears. I’d take him and Hotton at those picks, with a big ruckman or the complete opposite, Tommy Gross, at pick 21.
The amount of talent that would be top 10 in any other year is obscene, all the way out to pick 30 odd.

Its actually ridiculous and hopefully the way things are in 10 years with the majority of kids around the whole country choosing Aussie rules as their preferred winter sport. I know Andrew Varasdi will drive this as hard as possible through the whole of NSW/ACT.

Not at all.

We can keep overrating our youth because we like them or we can just say.

Yep, shown enough to be an afl level player.

Not enough to be a starting mid if we get the talent in

I expect it would only happen on the night depending on who is on the board at out pick #8.

But to answer your question there might not be anyone we rate highly at pick #8. Plus the next group are very even so why not turn 1 pick into 3 to fill our list needs eg another midfielder, ruckman and key defender.

The further down the list you get the less opportunity you have of picking the player you actually want.

Yes, you may have another chance but talent does actually diminish the further down you go and also your choices diminish.

We have been down the road of diluting our picks before, so I suppose its a strategy we have used over the past 10 years,

The entire point of the trade is to assume that the player we want at pick 8 is unavailable, but the player GWS want is. Therefore, leverage this and make them overpay

Your second point…theoretically yes. But have you looked at the draft crop this year?

But there are 25 players we would be happy to take in these slots, and plenty of choice for each position.
