You need to consider the picks between 27 and 32 when judging that trade.

Essendon will probably use picks 28 and 31 matching the bid for Kako. So those picks will disappear on draft night.

Brisbane will use pick 27 to match the bid on Ashcroft.

So in effect, picks 27, 28 & 31 will not exist beyond the top 10 and subsequent picks will be moved up after being pushed back by the original bid.

In sliding pick 27 back to pick 32 three of the five picks will disappear in matching bids. So in effect, we have only moved back two places to receive pick 45. A pick we used to trade-in Macrae.

Good business.

I suspect Essendon will line someone up pre draft to trade 28 and 31, perhaps even their next pick as well, for futures and then to trade back into different picks, probably with a third club. It will cost them for the agreements to trade with those clubs, but they should be able to match a bid with their later three or so picks. Every chance now that the threats are gone that he slips out a bit.

With the discount and their 40s /50s picks moving in with other bids, it’s not going to cost them an arm and a leg unless he gets bid upon at around our picks.

Agree St Neil but there are a lot of permutations. I wouldn't be surprised if Essendon trade out Pick 28 and 31 to West Coast for a future 2nd as soon as Kako is bid on, because they have enough points without them.

This has been discussed, and it just shows that you can't take the draft order at face value.

Edit: beat me to it Tommy Wigs

Allan is horrendous with ball in hand. I understand the point around concentrating on what a player can do rather than what they can't, but he's objectively terrible at a very important football skill.
The one thing that is very difficult to improve is overall skill level. You can do it for set shot kicking with enough routine practice but very few have managed to go from terrible to passable playing in the midfield without basically limiting themselves to handballing only. I'm a big no with either pick 7 or 8.
Thinking of player comparisons for Allan. Is he Dylan Shiel 2.0? Speed, Power, Sloppy kick.
Would we be happy with that?

Not a Hope in hell Whitlock & Gerreyn fall that low…we’ll definitely pick up Hoffman

I would have thought #32 was about right for Matt Whitlock, although you would think Gerryn is likely to be taken earlier by a WA club.

We have to remember in drafts where there is so much talent a number of kids slide a lot more than us pundits would think.

Finally get top 10 draft picks and we are to scared to use them
Take pick 7 & 8 to the draft and pick the very best available, if the new bloke is as good as some think he is surely we get a better player at 8 then 15

King, Camaniti, Sharman, Armstrong, Gerreyn, Keeler in the forward line. Not tall enough.
I saw one phantom draft that had Hofman bidded on at 48 and Cole at 56.
Will be an interesting couple of nights.

Hopefully you are about right with the two bids, how good would it be if they come after our #47 where ever that ends up!

8+F1 for 10+11.

It costs a premium to get premium picks.

Carlton paid an F1+ F2 for 14.

They sent 12+14+ Owies and junk for 3.

If you don’t want to part with 6. You need to give up value to get either of our picks.

Giants can give us back to back picks.
Think I'd be happier with 15 & 16 and not getting our F1 involved.

I don't see a justifiably big gap between players available at 10 & 11 and those at 15 & 16. Who are you thinking of that fits into this category?

EDIT: silly me, I was imagining we still would have 8 in that deal! Bit early for me obviously!

How about we do that deal for 10 & 11, then sell the 10 and our F2 for a couple of teens or a teen and early 2nd Rd?

I think the injuries are a bit of a cop out. They certainly haven't helped, but they are not the main factor that has limited Clark's career.

I would guess he has bottom 1% in genetics for an AFL listed player. Can't build muscle, is perpetually skinny fat, and his tank and speed are also not there.

His decision making and skill are excellent, but at the end of the day he is coming up against blokes that smoke him athletically.

This makes it hard for him to run out games, and he can't get to 30 possies, which is what you need from a top shelf mid.

Is it fair to put Reid in that category? Doesn't seem like a fair comparison to me. Reid has a good tank and gets a ton of the ball. Looks more Steele Sidebottom than Clark, and I rate Sidebottom highly.
Add to that by all reports he didn’t work that hard in the early part of his career and loved a bong.
Seems the Penny has dropped. With a bit of luck he could turn out to be a very handy contributor. It’s no fluke we have a stronger W/L record with him in the side

Some interesting scenarios in Dylans Mock draft 1-10 which drifts out to 13 will bids.
Most people probably won't agree that we don't go for Smillie and we swap picks with GWS for 15 and 16.
We Pick Bo Allan

Really leaning towards keeping. We can sit back and wait, pick the best at 7 and if we are offered 15, 16 and 21 for 8 and 32, I would certainly consider it, but think it's too good to actually happen.

They all love a bong, or a line. He looked pretty fit pre season then got the injuries that interrupted his season.

The guy who drafted for us is an Adelaide fan :tearsofjoy:. If it wasn't nuffy enough already, he explicitly says he thought about Murphy Reid but passed, and then has us picking Matt Whitlock as another KPP at #33 AND not matching a bid on Hoffman to take Kayle Gerreyn as Ruck/KPP at #44.

None of us were available? Seriously guys?
Who can be farked tho, there's waste of time and there's WASTE OF TIME

Why are people thinking we will take Armstrong at 8?

Not matching a bid for Hoffmann?

Rather strange.

Because they have no clue about Sharman and Caminiti

Opposition fans think our key forwards are King or bust, which as they will find out in 2025, is not the case

Hopefully Keeler can emerge too

The further down the list you get the less opportunity you have of picking the player you actually want.

Yes, you may have another chance but talent does actually diminish the further down you go and also your choices diminish.

We have been down the road of diluting our picks before, so I suppose its a strategy we have used over the past 10 years,
been crying out for top 10 picks for years and now we want to sh1t the bed and trade them out, elite talent much better chance with top 10 picks

No way we trade pick 7 when we could trade pick 8.

Overlooking Smilie for Allan.

I’m glad he isn’t drafting for us.

If we develop a strong midfield I seriously see Windhager becoming a good lockdown backman who can release and spread.

Yep, I can see that too. He was good and looked confident, when playing half back two seasons ago, and has been at his best on ball when playing a defensive and tagging mid.
Seems at his best when tasked with holding an opposition player back.
One way or the other, he's in the team, and will be a coaches dream.
