There are no stats on that but a good indication of it is CP to UP ratio

Reid 37/59
Gross 21/59
Jagga 55/64
Allan 23/38

Gross is clearly playing a lot more forward than Reid. And this is a contested player we are talking about - Gross last year was rated as one of the better inside contested mids so if he was playing more mid, his ratio would be a lot higher

Allan's is below par because as I have said, he is new to the midfield therefore one of his biggest weaknesses is stoppage craft. Easily developed at AFL level - as seen with Pou
If stoppage craft was easy to develop we’d have made gun mids out of many an athlete the last few years and wouldn’t be in the crisis we are.

Pou had a number of games that demonstrated his ability as a midfielder when he was underage. Something that Allan has not. He’s a very exciting prospect, but he’s not on the level that Murphy Reid, or the other midfielders are at YET. Could he get there? Of course. However law of averages say that the back flanker athlete doesn’t translate to the gun mid.

I’d disagree on the majority of this. I’d say our biggest issue is actually winning the ball in stoppage which is why our ruckman continually grabbed it, and slapped it on the boot most of the season.
I’d also say his ability to exit stoppage cleanly would hugely impact our ball use by putting in teammates into time and space.
Players who can create space at stoppage and generate momentum with ball in hand are critical.

If we can pair him with either of Langford or Smilie then we’re cooking with gas
Exactly.Have wrote this a couple of times now.His pairing with a ball pig is the key.
Smillie is the perfect pairing .

Law of averages also say that 180cm skinny mids that haven't shown an ability to break packs with leg speed get overpowered at AFL level - Lachie Neale and Sam Mitchell being the exceptions but both were late picks where there was low risk attached to punting on them

I'd be ok with taking Reid at pick 15, not pick 8

McKercher, Serong, Sheezel, Daicos, Neale, Brayshaw, Rowell, Butters, Warner, Ashcroft all with similar athletic profiles at 18 years old to what Murphy Reid has now. They all go okay, and would make a world of difference to our midfield.

The only thing stopping Reid from making the grade is what’s between his ears, and whether he stays in the park because plenty more as been done with a lot let than what he has.

Depending on sliders would you take a Draper & Reid, or if no sliders Reid & Allan
I’ve got no issues with Reid at 8 with anyone linked bar Travaglia & Lindsay.

I feel like any of those mids + Allan could work out well.

I believe Reid in isolation is a player we don’t have on our list. He is nothing like Hunter Clark and I feel like that’s a lazy comparison.

That is the other method of disposing the ball…

I mean the Dogs won a flag with handballing as a primary weapon didn’t they?
Back when the game was based on winning inside contest and clearance

How have they gone since Dimma's Richmond revolutionised the game to be based off ball movement and speed?

If we like the Viking we should be shouting it from the mountains. If you want him you will need to get him before 7-8. If you don’t he’ll be gone.

If we really like him, and he’s not taken top 6, take the sliding midfielder at 7 and the Viking at 8.

If someone desperately wants him they take him earlier and we get 2 rated mids.

Simple.

The last few premiers have based their game on ball retention.

Releasing your team mate into space with a handball is a skill that supplements that. It doesn’t take away from the fact the best sides retain the ball and use it cleanly and efficiently

Clearly I rate Murphy Reid, and there is every chance we draft Bo Allan and he becomes a better player however we’ve been down this road so many times where we’ve drafted on what someone might become as opposed to what they actually are and we’ve lost out so many times.
Different list management group or not, I’m ****ing nervous about this draft given its importance to our future

It's definitely something we can't screw up, but if the world turns on its head and say LDU is in RWB in 2026 then we're cooking.

Brisbane were ranked 12th for handball efficiency this year and recorded the 3rd least average handballs per game. Conversely, 1st in the league for kicks and 4th for efficiency

Retention is about kicking more than handballing. Which is why I don't rate Bo Allan as high as the others either

Reid averaged 3.25 clearances per game in the Champs. Allan averaged 3.66 as a non-specialist mid. Tom Gross averaged 3 as a half forward. Jagga averaged almost 7

Jagga played a lot more midfield minutes & around stoppages to be fair.

I think we’re going to have to show a helluva lot next year to attract a player of LDUs calibre.

If we have a year similar to this, and mess these picks up because we’ve tried to be cute then we’re still in no man’s land

I know, but its more than double Reid. That is not proportional to their time in midfield

Anyway, that wasn't the point. Point was that Reid is hardly recording better numbers than 2 guys who aren't even close to being recognised as good mids, despite all the rage about him being able to extract the ball and dish it out to his teammates and what not
