I just watched the round 15 VFL game of Carlton v GWS, Jack Carroll had 32 disposals. The first thing I will say is he is not the player I thought he was.

The next thing is I really dont see what our club have seen in him! He is not an inside or contested clearance mid, he is an outside skinny kid who has a nice kick and is quick in a straight line but his game in close is restricted.

Perhaps he might be ok on a wing or HBF, but I wouldnt have picked him up thinking he will become an AFL midfielder. Given the strength of the draft he is a really odd selection IMO.
He seems to be a decent ball user & lowers the eyes delivering into forward 50

I only watched the one game so I might have gone early, as his VFL highlights of the games vs Richmond and Bulldogs he looks quite impressive. He is not a bullocking style player who could win the real hard contests, but he might offer that speed and deft kicking we need. He does stand up well in tackles and often shakes off the tackler so he doesnt lack strength.

It is quite an achievement to have played any AFL games at Carlton with their midfield so it will be interesting to see how he goes. Hopefully he is one who has been slow to mature but really takes off following.

7,8,27 + 3 fs/academy
Would mean if we split 8 we attach 27 for some late points maybe.

Means we're also short a list spot for a backup ruckman. Maybe waiting on an injury for an spp pick? A lot of faith in heath?
And another spot if Crouch goes…looking likely I would’ve thought.

STEAL — Jack Carroll (Pick 41, Carlton)

Absolute steal. In my opinion he’s the steal of the draft so far,” Ablett said.

“Absolutely elite in the way he prepares himself.

“I’ve seen him play as an intercept defender and counter-attacker, I’ve seen him in the midfield with quality inside ball -inning traits and then he goes forward and kicks goals.

Carlton have got an absolute steal.”

Sheehan said he was surprised Carroll was still on the board at pick 41.

“Good speed and game sense, I even liken him to a bit of Josh Kelly, a left-footer that gets out of traffic pretty easily,” Sheehan said.

“What we’ve seen we really have liked. No one can lay a glove on them and to see him go at this point – he could’ve gone at 20 in some club’s views.”
Sheehan also said Battle was the steal of the draft at #39 in his draft.
Lose one, get one.
Coincidence? I think not 🤣

If you want to show your wares going to a stand alone club is much better. As a VFL player on an AFL aligned list you have to play to support others and don't get to play your own game. IOf you just want to have a kick it's fine but if being on a list is your dream you need to get out.
You don’t get to play at all if the club has few injuries so it’s back to your nominated local club. It’s not hard to see why it’s so difficult for Sandy, there’s also good money on offer in the sanfl and wanfl. Still can’t believe we’ve given up a list spot with this crazy scheme.

What about if we select the worst Sandy player, have him caught on film with some white powder before the season starts, delist him for breach of standards and then pick up someone decent in the mid season draft?

Sure we lose 6 months, but box ticked for 2024

Rofl?

Is that still a thing in WA?

I believe it’s been retained in honour of one their most infamous sons

He will potentially be competing against Hugo so it’ll be interesting who comes out on top!

We got pick 8 as compo for Battle…definitely a win
Yep. No question.
But was referring to losing one “steal of the draft” and picking up another “steal of the draft” - as both players have been referred to.

Can teams trade once a pick has been selected?

Eg.

North take FOS at 2
Tauru is still available at 7, then Saints trade 7 + F1 for FOS
North take Tauru at 7

This is normal for US sports and how a lot of trades function during the draft. Trades are made when the teams know which player/s are available at a pick. It’s logical as North would be gambling if they made the same trade prior to pick 2 being selected (targeting Tauru). Makes it harder for players on the night but it’s a professional sport.

To swap #8 we would probably need #15, #16 & #21 then #32 also goes to GWS

Do we have the available list spots (at the moment) to use those three GWS picks now that we have added Carroll as a DFA?

Assuming that 47 is going to be used to match bids for Cole and Hofmann and we use a back ended pick for Peckett.

Yes, believe that is the case. We debated a while back, but that was ok previously and doesn’t seem to have been changed.

Peckett will most likely end up rookie listed
