I’m struggling to see the Ough love. What position does he finish up in? At this point he’s not a beast at all, more an accumulator, but will not have the leg speed or foot skills to be really damaging in that type of role.

Happy to be wrong. What are others seeing at this point in his career? I get the size and late birthdate.

I think Jones best position for the team going forward is on a wing. The couple of late games he played the wing he looked really good and he could still come in and provide that dash when required. Jones is more a straight line player and doesnt have the game to play full time mid. It was suggested much earlier in the thread, that perhaps the club might try Wood in the CHB position. I wonder if that occurs, although his wingman marking front and back is very damaging.

Garcia needs to be given as much midfield time as humanly possible this year. He and Phillipou are the kids who are going to take off as a genuine AFL midfielders and give us that punch we crave out of the centre.

I dont know where we fit Travaglia and Tauru into the side immediately. There is going to be huge competition for the defensive positions excluding CHB. Perhaps Travaglia will possibly fill the Bonner role and we ease Tauru in via a flank forward or back. But Tauru is going to need a bit of extra time.

Other than Travaglia, I cant see any of the other 2024 draftees having much an impact next year. Perhaps if we grab a mobile ruckman they can work in with Marshall, but hopefully Keeler steps up to fill that posi.

I rekon Tauru will play 10+ games.

Could easily slot in for games as a 3rd tall at either end.

I reckon our list of guys who could still develop as mids isn't that bad:

Clark
Dow
Stocker
Byrnes
Henry
Hall
Carroll
Wanganeen-Milera
Windhager
Phillipou
Garcia
Wilson
Travaglia

No home runs there but there's a lot of possibilities. Do a good job of development and anything could happen there. I haven't given up hope yet.

If he can be a solid B+ player to support Pou, Owens, Windy etc then that's perfectly fine. Not everyone is going to be a triple AA, Brownlow contending, superstar.

Give me the guys that will follow orders and bust arse and we can build from there.

Haven't seen him much, but he's tidy by foot and more than useful by hand.

Pace isn't superb, but he's not exactly slow either. Very strong in the hips.
He’s a big boy I wonder how big he ends up, anyone know the family. Might end up too big for a mid but a very handy player with that skill set.

Do you think Jones has the tank for a wing position?

He's never been known for his endurance running. Good speed but he's more a burst player if you ask me.

Perfectly acceptable view point right now.

Mission on Monday saying we want mids.

Steele pre draft last night saying he wants a mid next to him next year.

We didn’t do that.

Nothing to do with the players selected. Face value the club was clear this week alone what it wanted.
He said hoping one would slide through, but the plan is always take the best player available. They did that.

You’d reckon with the first round done and dusted we were never really any chance to move up into top 3 spots without giving up both 7 and 8.

North packaged up their future 1st, which is likely a top 3 pick along with Richmond the other shoe in for a very high pick, and got pick 27 this year and a future 2nd. 7/8 and a future 1st even if offered was probably not convincing Norf or Carlton…

Inside mid, same projection but rawer than Smillie. Country kid, very late birthday, big game player, endless potential/upside.

20m sprint

Lenny Hofmann 2.861
Bo Allan 2.982
Tauru 3.001
Smillie 3.088
Ough 3.174
Travaglia 3.186

2km time trial

Darcy Wilson 5:52
Travaglia 6:13
Cole 6:24
Tauru 6:36
Smillie 6:38
Ough 6:39

Smillie being the Metro guy in the elite programs if you believe the narrative that Country boys have more potential and development left in them.

Glad you mention Hall…forgotten man amongst our faithful…not for long, the 2025 Hugo!
You are very bullish in Hall.
We didn’t get much of a look at him last year due to injury and new team development. I really like the look of him, it of a tough campaigner with good foot skills.
Hope you’re right.
How about some special focus on him in the track reports.
I think he’s a sleeper.

If someone bids too high on Cole, Mraz is a good option as a tall defender.
I wonder where Mraz would have been selected if he had an injury free year. It's a hard one for the heart as I reckon he's better than Cole due to Coles disposal.

I'd probably laugh if we got Mraz, Cole & Tauru. We are incredibly light on for depth down back though and the timing is right with Dougs and Wilks late 20s now.

Would be with a token pick tomorrow, if we did. Or pre-season sign

Can grab decent rucks anywhere. I hate the idea of using top picks for them.

Stanley/Blicavs, Fort/OMac, Cameron/Cox, Nankervis/Grigg...

Only Gawn/Jackson & maybe Roughead/Boyd really performed with a top shelf ruck/forward combo.

Otherwise just grab a workhorse that can halve the contest and get around the ground.
Haven't Boyd (SANFL) and Blakiston (WAFL) had Medicals with us ?

Yep.

Blakiston tipped to be a late pick and we are supposedly thre only club that's gone down the Boyd path, meaning he could be a super late pick or even a rookie.

All part of why I wouldn't grab Dodsen with our pick tonight. Assuming he's there, someone will be wanting to trade up for him. The hard part is how far back we'd be willing to drop.

Give me Shanahan, Boxshall, Ough or Moraes tonight and I'll be pretty stoked.

What does that say about next years draft? Or this years draft? or BOTH? Crazy... on paper an offer of 2024 pick 7 & pick 6-10 2025 for pick 2 or 3 looks pretty damn good. I guess Carlton can afford to bundle up 2 first rounders this year for pick 3, their list is already pretty much sorted, we don't quite have that luxury...

They also have Cody Walker coming through as a freebie FS... apparently the 2nd coming of C.Judd.

I reckon we are a club with high standards now. That era of half arsed training looks like a relic now.
Misson said the other day that 15 players (young players I think) will be doing leadership training with the All Blacks.
I assume this: allblacksperformancelabs
They're certainly looking for improvement at the club. The sort of stuff you can only do with decent finances.
