Walking away from an overpriced trade wasn't a mistake. The mistake was caving and going back the second time.

Although you have to shake your head in bewilderment when you look at the 2 first rounders Carlton were demanding back then for Gibbs due to his contracted status, then look at what they're now reportedly offering for the also contracted (and back to back All Australian) Dan Houston.
Nope the mistake is not going for it, especially two late 1sts who cares

I think 'Geelong are going after Oliver' might be a very rose coloured statement.

The real way to phrase it would likely be Geelong are willing to take Oliver's contract in a trade that dramatically favours Geelong.

My educated guess is the Geelong / Vic media annual circle jerk will come into play around Friday. MFC will become the bad guys for not giving him away to the Cats for essentially nothing, and blocking Oliver from going to a peaceful place where he can get out of the big smoke and sort out his life and rediscover his love of footy.

Roo mentioned on radio this morning that a coaching director announcement will be made in a couple of days
Is this a different to the position we are trying to bring Wright into?

If so, then we are trying to add a coaching director, Senior assistant coach and then the 'godfather' role for Wright. And all this without getting rid of any of our current team. Good to see we are trying to be active in bringing new talent into the club, can't see it all happening myself but it's good we are being active in this space.

Sounds like you’re getting a bit cynical with the AFL and their media cronies🤣. Couldn’t agree with you more.

I think coaching director would be Wright or similar ilk. The senior assistant from one of the two GF teams.

The game against Hawthorn at home later in the year is another pretty good example for those who don't believe we changed our gameplan.

Now at this stage of the season we had been back to playing closer to our 2023 style. For some unknown reason (probably drugs) we decided to go with four talls up forward.

After the second term where Hawthorn were running it easily out of our forward half, we decided to bring back the early season go slow gameplan after halftime.

Watch the first 10 mins of that second half and tell me the slow ball movement wasn't an instruction.

I think it was an outcome of a poor selection. We went with four talls to try and exploit Hawthorn's lack of tall defenders and to make Sicily have a defensive role. Instead, it rebounded on us and became a big strategic disadvantage, as you said.

That being said, I do remember us trying to play tempo football later that day and I agree - that was an instruction, because Hawthorn were cutting us apart.

Its only over priced in hindsight.

Gibbs in the 2017 team? Who knows what would have happened.

But we will ever make ourselves feel better by saying we 'walked away'

I would totally support the club offering Peatling 5 years and better coin than GWS. I know it’s a risk, but there’s just something about his skill set and upwards trajectory that makes me think we wouldn’t regret it.
If thats what it takes, go and do it I reckon

I dunno, I look at the Geelong list and it doesn't scream out with lots of high paid players.
Cameron
Danger
Stengle
Stewart
Holmes maybe with his recent 4 year deal...

That's about it.

Compare that to a team like the dogs
Bont, libba, Treloar, english, Naughton, jamara, Daniel, MacRae....would all be on similar or more than these Geelong guys and the rest of the feel squad.

Amen sister. I've been posting this for a while now. Cats finish top 4 and all of a sudden the 'Costa living allowance' line gets trotted out. Even by people who looked at their list and predicted a bottom 8 finish. Taking into account a renown coaching group and administration, that's a fair slight on the perceived best 23. But they continue to bank on about it, not just Bulldogs, Brisbane, Melbourne and even Carlton look to have more expensive lists than Geelong.
