If we want to trade back in for Dodson / player we have the two choices correct? Do pick 4 and not pick Welsh or we payout / trade someone and take 2 picks + Welsh. If we payout someone does it have to be today or could it be done on draft night?

Hope we get Dyson Sharp next year against certainly getting a top mid this year?

If Richmond were open to trading their F1 for our pick 4, I would do it only on the condition they would also trade pick 6 or 10 back to us for our F1 and we look to take Travaglia with it this year and then aim for Sharpe next year.

I think the last list lodgement date is near the draft?

There's very little risk in trading for Richmond's F1. Given Richmond's cleanout this year, it's almost inconceivable that they won't finish bottom in 2025. They're gutting their list, taking them down to GC/GWS formation year levels.

Trading for F1 would guarantee us the 1st choice in the 2025 ND... unless there's another F/S or Northern Academy kid getting in the way. Regardless, it still gets us the best publicly available kid in the competition. To that end, the trade is risk-free.

However, if we're assuming that that player will be Dyson Sharp, then this introduces significant risk to the equation. There are many examples of SA kids who were touted as top-10, or even potential #1, picks, who fell away dramatically in their U18 year:
  • Fogarty fell from being a possible #1, down to our pick at #12 - and there are examples of players who slid a lot further than Fog.
  • Welsh was touted as a top-10 pick a year ago, now there's talk that he may go all the way to the RD.
  • Arlo Draper was touted as a top-10 pick, who slid all the way to Collingwood's #45 pick, and has now been delisted.
It's not worth it if you're targeting a specific player a year out. However, if you're just looking to grab the best available player in the draft, then the risk is minimal.

Offer F1 for 10 or 11, get Dodson or another mid would be my preference
We don't have room on the list to do that.

It appears that the club is chasing Nasia Wanganeen-Milera in 2025, and that trade would almost certainly require our 2025 1st.

Every year there are (on average) 3 finalists from last year that miss the 8. Nobody could have predicted Collingwood would miss the 8 after winning the flag in 23.

Most years one of the Grand Finalists misses the finals the following year. In a tipping comp I am in they have a top 8 prediction side-comp and I always have a personal rule to leave out one of the grand finalists due to this.

This year I picked Collingwood as they had relied on winning close games for the past two years and looked the most vulnerable.

Having said that, I am not sure yet which of Brisbane or Sydney to leave out in 2025.

I think neither will miss finals.

Yep both lists are too strong to miss.

If I had to pick one of them though, it's Sydney. They lack a good tall forward, Rampe is getting older and their other key defenders are solid but can get exposed.

I’m fine with Reid overall but the fact we have Smith, Strachan and Burgess still on the list is bad management.
Strachan just still there because we haven't drafted a ruck during this current geological era. Not sure if that's Reid's fault for not trading one in or Hamish's fault for not drafting one.

Burgess shouldn't have been on the list in the first place. No idea what we were thinking trading for him or what niche he was supposed to fill. Depth, I guess, but a depth player still needs to actually be able to perform at the level when called up. Otherwise he's not depth, he's just clogging up the list.

Historically this is correct

But Benny Gale - yes no longer with them - has left a blueprint for future Richmond
When good CEOs leave they need competent replacements as no blueprint is going to cover the multitude of issues likely to arise over coming years. New coach who is already being questioned re culture and standards, new CEO, new Chaiman, losing best few players and winning spoon and odds on to win a few more,

That’s why you may see players wanting out in 2-3 years time if they end up dud like on field which IMO is quite possible. Scorpus mentioned Tiges vs GWS comparison but remember GWS also had a few experienced players like C Cornes to help guide. Seems a complete void upcoming at Tiges and Lynch about to get paid 1.6m next year - equating to around $200,000.00 per quarter perhaps

Edit - sorry for my gross exaggeration with Lynch. Based on his average of 4 games per year in recent years it’s “only” $100,000.00 per quarter next year assuming games variable holds

He's there to play SANFL

even once picked burgess could have been paid out. its not a lot.
we have been waiting for a developing ruck for a long time. they clearly dont rate young rucks

At 6 years at 900k ish (reported). And giving up a first rounder for him?

I would have been happy for a less valuable draft pick and getting him for 4-5 years at say 700k ish but Power seems to have paid way overs - contract length, $$/year AND trade outgoings.

Your thoughts?
I agree, I'd like him, but not at the done deal price. His ceiling's high but not he's not guaranteed to reach it. It's a gamble. If he plays to his potential way more often than he has, he'd be worth the big bucks. I could see him playing a part for us in some fast, clean transitions by foot from the back half, but it's not to be. And ANB will occupy some of his space.

If either are going to miss I'd suggest Brisbane. Sydney are pretty consistent. Without redemption on the agenda this year Brisbane could've fallen away with their start. No Joe next year and the fire may not burn as hot.

Personally I think they're both too strong to not make it, but if someone said a year ago that Collingwood would miss the 8 I'd have laughed at them.

No wonder the AFL were keen to make a statement as they love to go after him.

At least not a suspension.

For more important than using it for an unproven young ruckman.

Looking back on the last five years, I highly doubt current performance is a big player in deciding on if a player wants to leave until they hit free agency.

Seems like when a young player leaves, it's either for more money or circumstance.

We got rid of five senior players when we commenced in 2019 to trades. Betts, Jacobs, Jenkins, Keath and Greenwood. Two of them were salary dumps. We also had Ellis-Yolman walk via Free Agency. Though, it's also worth noting that contexually, this comes off the back of us imploding in 2019, and there is definitely benefits to having a team bleed out instead of implode. We uhh, also retired Douglas without telling him which also deserves to be mentioned due to PR not being a strength.

If you're comparing us to Richmond, this is probably trade period two of their rebuild. Their first big draft pick, their first horrific year (in a while). At this point, we tried to get pick 2 from FA from Crouch. Atkins elected to take free agency and we traded out Hartigan. We also had Gibbs retire and spend a lot of this period cutting depth, think Gallucci, Poholke, Taylor, Knight etc.

We didn't trade Laird/Smith because you do still need some experienced players to be guides in a rebuild, and we had more pressing needs to get rid of. We did reach the point in 2022 and 2023 where we had the lowest number of 100 gamers in the AFL. We're only starting to normalise in that facet now, seeing we're now up to the 13th most experienced list.

Hard to say what will happen to Richmond in the future, and really depends on Yze for the short term. I'm not backing them, but that's because once you enter the rebuild forest, it's very easy to get lost. Losing Bolton is a disaster though, no matter what picks they get.
No one at the time was saying to get rid of these guys like Laird & Smith, if anything people were criticising us for getting rid of too many players. In hindsight, sure maybe that would've been better, but at the time hardly anyone thought so.

On Tigers huge haul of first rounders. Get the cheque book ready for 3 years time…

If Richmond takes all eight picks, those players will all come out of contract at the same time at the end of 2027 — in the months before Tasmania comes into the league.

It would create an inflationary effect given top 25 picks are often paid as much as $500,000 in their fourth seasons so spreading out those picks over two seasons would put less pressure on the salary cap.

As a supporter base, we were not ready for that kind of cull of our best players. We have never bottomed out before and mentally it would have been a hard sell for the base to swallow
