Poor bloke, glad we've knocked it out of himSinclair was actually a Carlton supporter
it's why he took so long to come on, had to purge the filth from his systemPoor bloke, glad we've knocked it out of him
Is this really such a big factor? I feel like most of those recent moves (with Battle being one of the exceptions) had other circumstances (wanting to move back to their home state, better money/longer contract/more guaranteed game time etc.) that were much more important than the team they followed as a kid. Sure, it might help in a 50/50 situation to get someone over the line, but I would be surprised if for most cases it ever had any more impact than that. There is a recent trend of players wanting to be traded to the club they grew up supporting.
Over the past three seasons, we’ve seen Nick Coffield, Josh Battle, Jack Ginnivan, Harry Perryman, Alex Neal-Bullen, Liam Baker, Isak Rankine, Will Setterfield, Tanner Bruhn, Ollie Henry and Luke Jackson all return to their childhood team.
So how can St Kilda take advantage of this?
Here is a list of opposition players that grew up supporting the Saints (there would be more I’m not aware of).
Out of contract at the end of 2025
Tom De Koning (RFA)
Miles Bergman
Brayden Fiorini (UFA)
Matt Crouch (UFA)
Darcy Tucker
Liam Jones
An interesting quote on De Koning from Carlton’s website - “De Koning would ultimately be handed the No.12 guernsey at his new club, which was his old club: he supported Carlton as a kid before his childhood hero Nick Riewoldt – whose number he would wear at Ikon Park - swung him to the team from Moorabbin.”
Was our mega contract offer to Jacob Weitering just a ploy to squeeze the Blues’ salary cap so they couldn’t match an offer for De Koning next year? How can we leverage Riewoldt’s return to Australia?
Miles Bergman is the other one of this year’s list of note. We are always linked with him. His old man played a few games for our reserves.
Out of contract at the end of 2026
Ben King (2026 - RFA)
Ollie Murphy (2026)
Henry Hustwaite (2026)
Jack Bowes (2026)
Karl Amon (2026)
Ollie Murphy could be one to watch here. A raw 200cm defender who is yet to make his debut for Fremantle, he couldn’t have been a more passionate Saint growing up. Pre draft when asked about possibly being picked by St Kilda, he commented “That’d be amazing. It’d be a lifelong dream, but I can’t get too ahead of myself. But if it was, I couldn’t put words to it.”
Henry Hustwaite - a 195cm midfielder - might be another to track if he can’t crack a regular position in the Hawthorn on ball brigade.
Out of contract at the end of 2027
Griffen Logue (2027)
Out of contract at the end of 2028
Koltyn Tholstrup (2028)
Jye Caldwell (2028 - RFA)
Out of contract at the end of 2029
Eric Hipwood (2029 - UFA)
Out of contract at the end of 2032
Connor Rozee (2032 - UFA)
As we have seen with Josh Battle recently, the opposite can obviously occur with a Saint leaving to their childhood club.
Looking at our current list and who they grew up going for, North Melbourne (Mitch Owens & Darcy Wilson) and Port Adelaide (Mattaes Phillipou) are the teams to be wary of.

I'd say it would impact less than 1% of players decision making. Is this really such a big factor? Liam's dad Bob Jones played 20 games for St Kilda. Here is a list of opposition players that grew up supporting the Saints (there would be more I’m not aware of).

How we didn't take advantage of the Jack Bowes deal when he is a saints supporter and we could have doubled up with pick 7 is beyond me. All this salary cap space and nothing to use it on either. There is a recent trend of players wanting to be traded to the club they grew up supporting.

The main issue there was Geelong had an early tip off that Gold Coast were willing to do a salary dump so they got in before everyone else and made it seem like they were interested in him as a player before everyone else. How we didn't take advantage of the Jack Bowes deal when he is a saints supporter and we could have doubled up with pick 7 is beyond me. I have not found a confirmation on that.Great post, very un Big Footy like lol.
FYI Darby Hipwell has left Sandy and is signing with Frankston.
Could he be signed during the DFA period before draft night? Don’t have to use a pick on a ruck need. And we have a rookie pick before them
Can do a Hugh Greenwood
Yes but it depends on whether we want to take pick 47 or sign an SSP rookieCould he be signed during the DFA period before draft night? Don’t have to use a pick on a ruck need.
Gags wasn’t even at the races for this one.The main issue there was Geelong had an early tip off that Gold Coast were willing to do a salary dump so they got in before everyone else and made it seem like they were interested in him as a player before everyone else.
No one was genuinely in the race except Geelong.Gags wasn’t even at the races for this one.
He found out this was a legitimate option after 6-7 clubs had already fondled GCs balls by this point.
You want your club at the forefront of any of these deals. No one was genuinely in the race except Geelong.
The entire thing needs going over with a fine tooth comb by an independent party imo. Geelong clearly have a lot of power and influence both in AFL House and the AFLPA. They have an uncanny knack of finding and being allowed to exploit loop holes before the AFL clues on publicly. No one was genuinely in the race except Geelong.
No he wasn’t he’s stated multiple times in interviews that he was a saints fanSinclair was actually a Carlton supporter

It was astonishing that it was ticked off on at all. I can understand letting Bowes go as the salary dump for maybe a token pick, but the addition of pick 7 just screams some back door deal having gone on. Considering that it was actually reported that Geelong had been into Bowes for a year by that point they had some very advanced warning of the Sun's willingness to get rid of Bowes. The entire thing needs going over with a fine tooth comb by an independent party imo. That’s not to discount the great work that Geelong have done finding and developing talent. That’s obvious.
How on earth the premiers were allowed to be given Pick 7 and have a pick before us (who didn’t even make finals) is quite frankly a joke.
Hey but apparently we dropped the ball on this one. Was always going to Geelong - Hawthorn and Essendon offered him more money but somehow some posters reckon we stuffed up.Hocking worked at AFL when Suns entertained the idea of the dump a year out. Hocking goes to Geelong. Dangerfield met Bowes at AIS squad years earlier and kept in touch. Cats used this angle with Danger in his ear well before other clubs knew. How they couldn’t do a salary dump and a free 2nd rounder for a 3rd rounder back and it was straight away pick 7 smelt big time. But hey, it’s the AFL. And as Laura would say, we are comfortable where this all sits.
The final point gets me too.Hey but apparently we dropped the ball on this one. Was always going to Geelong - Hawthorn and Essendon offered him more money but somehow some posters reckon we stuffed up.
Biggest scam was Geelong being able to spread Bowes salary over 4 years rather than having to actually honour the terms of his existing contract.
We would've taken Phillipou at 7 and Elijah Hewett at 10 (who looks like a jet when injury free)The final point gets me too.
Suns putting 7 on the table so far out was mental. Surely there was no need to go as far as that.
Anyway, Jhye Clark is really struggling. He’s young, sure, but I’m glad Pou fell through
You never know, had we been in early or along with Geelong things like our extra cap room for a more attractive offer + him being a Saints supporter are the little things that can tip it in our favour. Anyway time to move onNo one was genuinely in the race except Geelong.
