He may well truly think what he says. But it is remarkable how many of our athletes all seem to come down in the one side of these topics. The voice for example.

They are either not reflective of the community, or they all know where their bread is buttered.

Pathetic opinion.

He's been genuine and consistent about his views the entire way, even when it cost his hip pocket by not appearing in sponsor ads.

He had a similar opinion to a lot of Australians in their late 20s, and good on him that he's not a coward and actually expresses it.
I'm 56 so not in the Boomer generation (not that I abide labels). That said, I totally concur with Pat's statements and my children (all in their twenties) have all been raised to have the same environmental and societal awareness. Being a humanist and caring about our environment are pivotal to being human.

Anyway, this thread is way better when we discuss cricket.

You mean elite sportspeople in their 20s are not reflective of the general community? Amazing.

There are plenty of people in the same age bracket as Smith and Cummins who disagree. There are obvious career consequences if you don’t toe certain lines.

And when it is not just the current players but the former players, commentators, administrators and board members, safe to say the leagues are not representative of their own constituency.

Are there?

There are plenty of cricketers - current and former - who spend a lot of time with decidedly conservative politicians and media types and nobody bats an eyelid.

Pat Cummins is less than six months out his 20s. You can polling that shows people in their 20s support changing the date by a fairly hefty majority.

He’s an Australian being asked about Australia Day.

Whose area is it? Michael Atherton’s?

F**k me dead

It has to be a real Australian, you see.

Pat Cummins is woke, so that makes him not a real Australian, or something.

Presumably they should ask the bloke below:

I genuinely wish i had the time and energy to care about this shit as much as some of you do...

Imagine getting all worked up because an athlete has a different opinion about what date a public holiday should fall on.

I think he's a below average captain. He goes ultra defensive when the game is being taken away from us, with no plan B. Warney would be rolling in his grave.
He has got flaws still as a captain but worth noting he is still learning on the job. Despite those flaws he has had an incredible amount of success.

Not many captains have been successful and even the ones that have tend to receive a lot of criticism (Smith, Clarke, Root, Kohli) all copped a ton of heat at times.

He is not perfect but he is a decent captain and hopefully still improving.
