Player Watch #46: Ben Miller - Re-Signed Until 2026

I think the fact he knew he was going to get a good long run at it really helped his mental approach to this block of games, and it's done him wonders.
Agree, cant underestimate the pressure of playing on egg shells. Certainly a benefit of this season.

I would’ve given him 4-5 years tho
Maybe he’ll get a further extension 2025 if he continues this form into next year. He’s heading in the right direction, this from our website
“Miller ranks #1 at Richmond for One Percenters, #3 for Marks, #4 for Rebound 50s, and #5 for Intercepts, all while playing on the opposition's best power forwards.”

Heard commentators say he is statistically the best 1 on 1 defender ?? Is this true ?
I heard a stat that after R10 he had only lost a single one on one contest for the year.

I can't remember the exact stat (marking ?) or where I heard it so if anyone else heard that please expand.

Very pleased that this big fella has re signed. Could be a weapon as he begins to blossom.

Correct, only lost one 1v1 contest out of the 30 odd he's been involved in.

#1 in the league.

Amongst all AFL defenders this year Miller sits 16th for 1 v 1 defensive contest loss %. See the first table below showing Miller 16th, losing 18.6% of his defensive 1 v 1's this year. The second table shows in the far right column the amount of 1 v 1's each player has been involved in. Miller along with Jack Buckley averages the equal most 1 v 1 contest involvements.

As Miller has been in 43 defensive 1 v 1 contests this season and lost 18.6% of them, it would seem he has lost 8 of his 43 defensive 1 v 1 contests. Tylar Young lost 10 of 27 and it seems Richmond made the switch to get Miller onto the prime target after Young had been in the horrors. Since this switch, Miller's 1 v 1 loss % has probably blown out a bit.

The stat being trumpeted in media I believe was Miller has lost 1 x 1v1 ‘marking’ contest of 30 or so contested. So I assume the others he has lost are 1v1 ground balls coming in as opposed to marking contests.

When I watch extra tall defenders like Pearce, Andrews and Moore, I’m super excited with what Miller could develop in to as he gains more and more confidence. He’s got elite speed, is a good kick and seems to read the play pretty well. No reason he can’t become an excellent KPD given he’s only 24yo.

Just image Lynch/Lefau KPF’s, then Balta, Miller and Gibcus KPD….

That’s why we’ve gotten be careful to make list decisions assuming we’re going to be cellar dwellers for years on end… we’ve got loads of talent … just that most of it is in the stands.

Excited for the young Dad he is a well grounded individual and the Tigers have done the hard yards in training Miller up
I think Ben will be on a steady trajectory going up and become as dependable as Dave Astbury.

In a horror year of injuries and the back line under tremendous pressure Miller at the most critical time of his career has had years of added experience pile onto his shoulders. By the time he reaches 27 years old and in his absolute prime the oppo forwards will dread to see Ben line up against them.

Congratulations Funky.

.

Dare say its the player wanting the smaller deal, hoping his stock will rise and the next contract will be more juicy.
Yeah think the 2 years would of been from Millers camp
He’s 24 now so two years takes him to the 26 - 27 range

Generally speaking it will be his peak physically so will maximise payments and a contract to probably get him to 31 - 32

Will be an unrestricted free agent (as he is now) so that will also potentially give him some leverage at the bargaining table

Smart move and probably works out well for everyone involved including us because it stops us over committing when our list is in a little bit of flux overall
