Wouldn't be against a rule coming in, in the next few years where if a ball is deliberately hit OOB its basketball rules. Feel like it would inevitably speed up the game.

• Deliberate OOB, or clear disposal & OOB with no teammate there to receive.... Free kick.
• All the rest: throw it in.

It's got me bamboozled why footy fans have such a problem with this rule. People lose their shiit over OOB free kicks more than any others. It's like a reflex action to boo the umps over 'deliberate'

The rule works because it forces players to keep the ball in play when they gain possession
A couple of times per game we see free kicks 60m, 70m, 80m from goal... (Big deal.)

Essendon had the ball and were off to advantage anyway so that had no effect on play, lost his cool in a key part of the game and had no other intention than to get payback.

What I don't get is Essendon faffing around in the middle with about a minute to go. Saad kicked a goal with a couple of seconds on the clock when 45 odd seconds earlier they had the ball 30m away from where he started. Another 5 seconds could have been the difference with McDonald-Tipungwuti winning the centre clearance.
