people would surely be more interested if there was a top level team with top level talent truly representing the state. i don't think it's a fair comparison personally, there isn't a local/state league anywhere that draws huge crowds

Back in the day, you used to go along to see young players who were potentially AFL stars, or were returning AFL players.
These days there's no developmental opportunities, you don't get to watch those players blossom. Hell, our best players aren't even being taken in the AFL draft, then have to move to the mainland, play a year in SA, WA or VIC then they get a shot.
For what it's worth, I still attend local footy as a spectator.
