I'm glad this has been brought up in this thread.

Amongst those 21,000 attendees were four neutrals from my family who were accompanying Freo supporting friends visiting from WA.

We were talking about this very topic last night, and the fact that with crowds like this at possibly St Kilda's most important game of the season, it is not sustainable to continue to prop up the likes of St Kilda, North and the Bulldogs in this national competition.

I'll give it 10 years.
Allow Saints to play these sort of games at Moorabbin and it would be a sell out instead of a venue that no one likes, against a team that have very little Victorian fan base.

Not quite the howler Saints fans were hoping for...

Yeah, it was hard to tell on tv but the ump was about a metre away on the perfect angle so it's a fair assumption that he saw him get his boot to it.

Very convenient for Saints fans to be able to blame two umpiring calls for a 41 point loss though.

It is becoming a common theme in every st kilda loss, irrespective of margin, that they get smashed by the umpires.

Maybe if more of their supporters turn up, the BOOOOOOOS and noises of affirmation will be more prominent from their supporter base so as to properly influence the decision making of the umpires.
That's not how the game should work, Umpires need to be more FAIR. If they don't pay a free to one team then the other team should be penalised for the same action.
The rules of the fame have become to muddled and open to interpretion, this doesn't happen in NRL, NBA, NFL or other sports just AFL.
The big wigs are making the game unmatchable.

Not just two calls.
I forgot a blatant two handed throw was a valid way of disposing of the ball.
That is many of the atrocities that happened in the first three quarters.

Not at all, We lost that game because it's very hard to play against 19 players out on the field. We came back to within 18 points in the last.
Saints gave up and I'm not happy about that but understand. Hope Ratten trains that out of them.

If he made contact then the ball would of moved in any direction instead of stopping in the place where he dropped the ball. Physics refutes your claim.

Stopped in place? Lol.

You ignoring all the holds missed on Brayshaw?
Or the hold on Fyfe which he tried to push through, only for the umpire to pay against him?

Plenty calls went both ways. Always have always will. It’s not why you lost.

I can't think of any other game or sport that the adjudicators (umpires) are the focus of so much discussion post match, every game & every round. After reading most of the posts here, both set of supporters feel they were hard done by, by the umps & that seems to be the rule, rather than the exception.

I'm old & have watched a lot of footy for a lot of years so I've had lots of time to think about why the umpires get it wrong so often. One big problem is we give the umpires rules that they themselves need to personally interpret & that will differ greatly from umpire to umpire. Prime examples are.. "insufficient intent", "no genuine attempt" & "prior opportunity". None of us are mind readers, not even umpires, so why are they given rules that makes them have to guess what the player is actually trying to do.

It used to be "deliberate out of bounds" now it's "insufficient intent". One mindless rule changed to an equally mindless one. I hope there aren't people that are paid to come up with this stuff.

Most sports are cut & dry... you transgress & you get penalised but in AFL we let the umpires make their own interpretations of the rules. Everybody knows that players don't always make a "genuine attempt" to get rid of the ball when they are tackled but what the umpires want to see is a player pretending to get rid of the ball by tightly holding the ball in one arm & ridiculously thumping it with their other hand. This is just another farce of the game.

So many of the rules in AFL are just plain stupid. The umpires are a problem, we have 9 of on the field plus the one's on the interchange etc but in my opinion it's the rule makers that people should focus on, not the umpires themselves.

And St Kilda got 21 of those 22 in defensive 50. Freo 5 frees forward 50 of 17. Where the frees are paid makes a huge difference
Most field scores are set up from defence. If what you say is correct, Saints should of been better at converting 21 chances into scores

Team wins the free kick count, but gets beaten by 41 points.

Me thinks that blaming umps is not the reason for your loss.

They get it wrong sometimes!

However it was ill-discipline that handed Freo a goal leading into 3/4 time, not the umpires call. With less than a minute to go, Butler should have just STFU!

All year the talk of the town has been umpire dissent. It’s a weekly topic. Players have had it drilled into them from pre-season — don’t abuse the ump.

Given this, well, I have a list of candidates for dumbest player in the AFL but surely now have to seriously consider placing Butler high up there. I’m so glad the Saints fans booed him so strongly for being such an immense idiot.

Change the out of bounds back to the original rules, last touch.

That's so conclusive, wow.
A blurry flat image proves your point.
How many times does a goal look like a behind from one angle and a goal from another. Good attempt trying to justify a stupid call.
Stupid call? Looks very close to me. 50/50 at best. Play on was called, and looking at that I can see why.

Not sure why you're raging about this. Saints won the free kick count and lost by 41

It wasn't the umpires. You might want to look elsewhere.

But that would require Saints fans to have some introspection and realise their team is utter trash!

At the game, Saints fans are so cry babies.

The free count was 22-17 in their favor.

More chips than a Smith's factory.
And I suppose the a chop on Lobb was there plus the high on Brodie. When clearly brodie hit Jones in the face.
Wonder why we are salty at a corrupt umpire that helped you stay in the game, got you into front and then helped you win.

The ball misses Clark foot, Ump got it completely wrong and he was standing a metre away.
It's either he is utterly shit at his job or he was helping you guys out. Which is worse?

Dockers were absolutely shit, Fyfe won that game for you along with Stevic.

You are a sook, plenty of bad calls for both teams.

Free count 22-17 in your favor.

Why don't you blame Butler for the 50m?

If Butler just shut his mouth, Fremantle most likely wouldn't have scored.
Butler was an idiot, he was frustrated but you keep harping on that one incident. Did you miss all the free that weren't paid in the first quarter to help Dockers keep in touch with the Saints.
Saints were horrible in the fourth quarter but you can't blame them, considering they came out an demolished Dockers in the first. We played out of our skins in the first but were completely hampered by ump Stevic.
I suppose we deserved this because the same thing happened in round 2.
