Haha, great post Sainter, one problem, you had the bloke wearing 23 in there, as long as he plays, YOU WON'T WIN A GAME FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON, IT'S GUARANTEED.:)

Changed my post cos just remembered sa1nter is a pretty good guy!

Give him the benefit of the doubt! :)

Anyhow, Kosi also unlikely to be selected even if he was fit

Oh Optimax, there is the problem. You have presented nothing but facts, yes. However, when the siren sounds, and the ball is bounced, said facts will become trivial for the next 2 hours. :)

Looking forward to the great competition that awaits us guys. :thumbsu:

Re: AFL Round 11 - Coll v St Kilda - Pre-Game & Selection Discussion

Was going to ask who 23 was, but it's this guy..

http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=827772

Sa1nter himself gives him a nice wrap post 19

Ah yes that was me. And that was my opinion of him when I got home from the Melbourne game. Let's be honest here, he was terrible in that game.

But who can really tell what lies ahead in life, eh? Maybe it's redemption time for Kosi?

Re: AFL Round 11 - Coll v St Kilda - Pre-Game & Selection Discussion

What I'm also interested in seeing, is if it is close late, how both sides run out the game.

For the Saints, it's been more about carrying out the gameplan for 4 quarters, than running out of puff.

You guys have been finishing very well, but I think St Kilda's fitness hasn't been too bad, and I'm not sure they'll disappear in the last term as some other opposition teams have.

Fair point?

AFL Round 11 Preview - Coll v St Kilda MCG Sat 7.10

Round 11 Preview - Collingwood vs St. Kilda – Grand Final Replay - alas no where near as comprehensive as DaVe.

Until last week the prospect of a Grand Final replay was not very enticing at all, with the Saints indifferent form and Pies strong start to the year suggesting that the gap between the two sides was widening. This, all changed with the Saints producing 2 strong wins and putting themselves back fairly and squarely in the mix for the eight.

The Season to Date

St.Kilda endured a tumultuous preseason and had started the year with close losses, a frustrating draw and to compound the situation, injury to their talismanic Norm Smith medalist, Lenny Hayes. On the other hand Collingwood are off to a strong start, apart from a slender loss to the Cats, well and truly intrenched in the top 2.
We are now coming into this week with renewed interest. Collingwood have shown at times during a game that we are very much vulnerable. The Saints have shown in their last 2 games a renewed hunger for the contest as evidenced by a strong win against Freo at Patersons.
Ross Lyon has endured much to distract him from the job at hand, even the week leading into the Freo game they had to face pleas from former greats and intense media scrutiny about their lack of commitment to this season. I think that the Saints showed much of their fibre, especially losing Goddard, to come away from Subi with a strong win.

At Selection
Collingwood are currently without the services of Jolly, Johnson, Nate and Leigh Brown, McCaffer and Goldsack from their GF teams. Players such as Wood, Tarrant, Davis, Krakouer, McCarthy & Buckley have filled the void. No injuries this week – thankfully.
St. Kilda is missing Hayes, Gardiner, Eddie, Gram, Kosi & Baker from its GF side. In their stead we find McEvoy, Siposs, Steven, Winmar, Lynch & the recycled Polo. Players such as Goddard (reported that he may play), Dempster and Blake may need replacing?

Change of tack
As mentioned early in the year the Saints seemed flat and disinterested – strangely subdued and prior to the Melbourne game RL looked bereft of answers. RL decided to make a strong statement of his intentions - Jason Gram and Ben McEvoy were dropped. Youngsters such as Siposs, Cripps and Winmar had debuted this season amongst others as Lyon looked to youth to refresh his squad. The footy played by his team in the Freo game is a real indicator that the coach may have his men back on the ball.

The Game
Pies have had some periods of absolutely stunning footy, and frustratingly periods of less than impressive returns. Generally Collingwood have played seemingly within themselves in most games this year, at times looking in trouble, yet they have been able to find the switch in most games to win comfortably. Teams have been able to find ways of unlocking the press for some periods of games, although it must be said, Collingwood may not have looked as committed in its application at times - seemingly doing just enough. The game against the Eagles pleased Mick Malthouse who declared that it was the Pies best four quarter performance for the year.
The Saints are likely to have studied the tape of the game against the Cats and have strategy devised to beat the "press". I'm sure that this strategy will involve plenty of physical attention and long kicking to the speedy Milne (19 majors) and crafty Schnieder (12 goals). Young Steven has pace could also pose Collingwood problems. I feel that the tactics employed by them will be close checking, flodding and defensive – tailor made to blunting the spread and run from the contest and subsequent scoring potential.
I think it is essential that the Saints get to a quick lead for the prospect of running over the top of the Pies would not be easy as Collingwood are possibly the best physically conditioned side in the game.
Where Collingwood are tough to counter is that they have 10 or so players with 8 goals and above. The Saints have 3 the next best being on 7 - it would have been encouraging to see a greater spread against the Dockers - although the Pies at the "G" may prove a completely different prospect.

Snapshots of Key Saints
Sam Fisher – he has really been a rock of Gibraltor this season and will likely be freed up to rebound off the Saints 50 in this game. He will be ably supported by Qwilt, Dawson and lately Dal Santo has set the game up off half back. Sam Gilbert looks settled back in defence and at best appears a pinch hitter type up forward.
Leigh Montagna – started the year a little under par compounded by an undisciplined act against Carlton. Since his return, however he has been switched on.
Arryn Siposs – great to see Lyon blooding young kids and from the little I’ve seen of him he looks the goods - 5 goals shows he has the ability to convert!
Jack Steven – played his best game for the club against Freo In a close to best afield performance. This young man missed the finals last year – his star is on the rise - 6 goals to date.
Ben McEvoy – was to this outsider curiously dropped for the Melbourne game, thankfully given a reprieve and showed he deserves his spot as the number one ruckman.
Clinton Jones – this bloke doesn’t really have amazing skills, but is a good honest footballer, leading the tackles at the club with 51 – often given jobs on the opposition’s most dangerous player.
David Armitage – I think he has been one of the Saints shining lights for the entire season, with strong tackling in and under work as evidenced being first in contested possessions with 93 to date.
Saint Nick – I don’t think this has been Roo’s best season so far, although his work rate has probably intensified he seems to be doing the work of 2 and that has reduced his ability to kick goals, 15 majors to date – simply looks too stuffed when kicking at goal.
Brendon Goddard - seemed to have over dosed on angry pills this year. It is no coincidence that both the Saints and Brendon have produced their best displays for the year. It is hoped that he has felt no major side effects from his knock to the neck on Sunday - surprising that there is talk of him playing.

Hot Pies to date
Dale Thomas – he has been immense so far this year, his skill coupled with a massive work rate – fantastic.
Scott Pendlebury – just silky and has so much time, one of our keys
Heath Shaw – Heater has had a superbly consistent year this year, rebounding brilliantly off half back.
Dane Swan – prior to the bye was in top form seems to be a little below par lately, still a very dangerous player, leads contested possessions with 270.
Travis Cloke – he has been very accurate this year booting 20 majors, boasts 36 contested marks and with Dawes have formed a strong partnership they average 4.1 goals per game.
Ben Ried - is continuing his development very well and is now teaming magnificently with Tarrant.
Luke Ball - may have started the year a little slowly is now probably producing his best form for the club leads all comers with 60 tackles.

Pies that need to lift

Alan Didak has been way below his usual numbers this year, he showed some promising glimpses against Adelaide and West Coast.
Nick Maxwell is yet to capture his best form since his preseason injury.
Cam Wood in the absence of Jolly has a huge chance to show he is the man to replace Jolly when he retires.

The Verdict

Assuming Collingwood are able to absorb much of the Saints early pressure and not get too far behind Collingwood should be able to account for the Saints - possibly to the tune of 4 - 5 goals. I do expect that it wont be a pushover though as they have found a desire to play for each other once more.

Re: AFL Round 11 Preview - Coll v St Kilda

Interesting read, club has confirmed today Blake is out for 2-6 weeks, so there will be a definite change for him.

Re: AFL Round 11 - Coll v St Kilda - Pre-Game & Selection Discussion

You guys have been finishing very well, but I think St Kilda's fitness hasn't been too bad, and I'm not sure they'll disappear in the last term as some other opposition teams have.

Fair point?

I'm not sure that other teams have been disappearing, it's just we've only really applied a hard press in the 4th quarters of games so far. I don't expect St. Kilda to run out of legs in the payback game, but as you said, seeing whether they can carry out the gameplan against increased 4th quarter pressure is the question.

Fair point?

I think that is fair, it seems the average side in the competition can not cope with the intensity and pace that we throw at sides over a 4 quarter period, especially later in games.

But the only truly experienced team we have played so far (Geelong) played better then us in the last quarter, and StKilda, while likely to be missing a few players, still have the second most recent finals and Grand Final experience of any team outside of the Cats.

I can't see the Saints lying down and letting us run all over them due to a lack of fitness or experience, but I firmly believe talent is the Saints problem at the moment, and talent is about the only thing that can truly worry us at the moment IMO.

Shaping up as a great macthup though, the Saints form, especially last week has given this game a massive boost in terms of relevance.

Re: AFL Round 11 Preview - Coll v St Kilda

Outstanding job Loz, DaVe would be very proud of you!

From the Saint's prespective, they look a lot more dangerous and energised now they've
( finally!!) decided to play a few younger guys like Siposs, Steven, Lynch, Winmar.

Hard to predict how things will go, all depends who's on and how they attack the ball, but Pies should be prepared for a Saints onslaught, and have the weapons to meet the challenge.

Re: AFL Round 11 - Coll v St Kilda - Pre-Game & Selection Discussion

As long as Baker doesn't cheap shot someone, I'll be happy.

Fixed properly.:D

Re: AFL Round 11 - Coll v St Kilda - Pre-Game & Selection Discussion

Saints pressure and tackling through midfield was great last week, gave Freo no room to move and they hated it, fumbling and bumbling with the ball. Saints got their goals from all their short people getting acres of space in the forward half, we need to hold our structure and small backs be on their toes.
Also need to remember to hit up short targets, switch and not bomb long to Fisher and co, they block each others men and get easy grabs.

Re: AFL Round 11 Preview - Coll v St Kilda MCG Sat 7.10

I've enjoyed watching the new faces in the Saints side. They have definitely added some energy to the playing group. On new faces to the side i'm interested in how Nick Heyne has been progressing and why he hasn't been getting games? Has he just not developed? had injuries? I really rated him in his TAC days and was sure he'd be a player to make the grade.

Our biggest mistake in GF1. We should have learnt better than to do this against the Saints. You'd hope anyway. It almost cost us the GF. Spot on that we need to spot up short targets. We are one of the best field kicking sides in the competition so this is definitely the go against the Saints.

Re: AFL Round 11 - Coll v St Kilda - Pre-Game & Selection Discussion

no change for me...

if anything, i'd love to see Keefe & Fasolo have a run around but i don't think anyone has done enough (or too little) to warrant an omission.
