To elaborate on this, a "normal" sized ball is a size 5, that's what's used in the Men's competition and most other major leagues. There's also a size 4.5 that is used as the standard in most pre-existing women's competitions.

For reasons completely beyond the understanding of... well, basically anyone, the AFL decided "no, women need to use the size 4 ball designed for four-year-olds instead of the one they already play with".

This isn't even an exaggeration, here's an official sizing guide from Sherrin's website:

The AFL decided the recommended age group of "4 to 15 years" was better than the one that says "Womens" next to it and has already been used in the past. They really should fix that.

At the risk of being the guy missing/explaining the joke, yes Sherrin really should fix that error on their website. Clearly, that is supposed to say "14 to 15 years".

Ratings Breakdown
- Women's AFL: Saturday Night Football (Channel 7) was the 11th most-watched FTA program of the day in the five main cities, despite only showing in one. 268000 people watched in Melbourne.
- Women's AFL: Saturday Night Football (Channel 7) was the 2nd most-watched FTA program of the day in Melbourne.
- Women's AFL: Saturday Night Football reached a peak audience of 498000 people across four metro cities on Channel 7 and multichannel 7mate.
- Coverage of the game on Fox Footy reached a peak audience of 190000 viewers.

Found it interesting that the article on the AFL website talks only about peak and "combined" audiences...

That's interesting, was the coverage on 7 or 7mate in Adelaide? And if 7, was it delayed?

There is something wrong with the OzTAM data TV Tonight has published then.

I cant even see saturday data for tvtonight *edit - nvm* - it was early in the afternoon, and probably a different broadcast slot.

Adelaide game started at 4.30pm SA, Dogs game didnt start til 7.45

Didn't players have to nominate which state they wanted to be picked in? I haven't checked but minus the marquee players each non Vic teams are essentially state teams?

The top WA talent was pillaged in the marquee draft. From memory something like 8 or 9 of the top WA girls were drafted over east before Freo put their team together with the best of the rest.

So? Where you going with this? I watched because I wanted to watch. I will watch again because I enjoyed it.
Skills need to improve, but pressure and intensity are top notch.

People constantly going but but but but but but but SKILLS, are starting to really piss me off. Can judge the skills myself thanks, do not need your advice.

Suggest everyone else watching can judge them as well.

So go back and read what I was replying to if you don't get the point of the post.

Yep, and every single person participating in the AFLW is significantly older than 15.

I got the point of the post, its the point of the point I do not get.
How can you miss it?

The women's games were not being played at a high standard.

People can scream from the rooftops that the girls are amateurs playing a sport that's only relatively new to a lot of them and that the level will improve, but this doesn't change the fact that the skills and standard on show on the weekend were quite poor.

All this hyperbole about how great the games where, and how hard they were "cracking in" is great, but the harsh reality is that the standard of football wasn't flash.

That obviously offends some people to consider(it seems), but it's quite clearly the case to anyone who sat down and watched the amount of turnovers, dropped marks and kicks to no one in particular.

I'm calling bullshit on this one.

What gets shown on primetime on TV is what's popular. The standard of sport or even tv show has nothing to do with it. Women's sport on the whole is growing with popularity. 800k with a 1.1 million peak tuned in to watch the Collingwood Carlton season opener and it was a sellout at the ground. Those are insane numbers. Considering the barren wasteland that is sport on television in February, you had better get used to watching these girls develop their skills if you flick on channel seven during primetime.

They would want to improve the standard quick smart otherwise they will lose viewers QUICKLY.
As soon as the AFL decide to make people pay to attend live you will see a drop in support there too.

It's all downhill from here.
