An offer he can't refuse

In the short term there won’t be as many jobs in the AFL industry and some good operators will be pushed out of other programs. We need to target and attract the right ones.

I get the feeling Nicks signed on knowing that because of the payouts he was 12 months away from being able to pull moves and bring in new people. I’d say he’d have an idea on who he wants but people with options may be less willing now to move in the current environment.

I think with our list we can absolutely afford to target a “Luke Hodge” type and Shane Edwards is the senior player I’d be targeting (even though he seems rusted on at Richmond). He has shown the ability to coach on-field with positioning/set ups in the past... and is from a winning program.

Hurn (to me) looks like a player who would value being a one-club player more than most but given he’s always spoken of coming back to the family farm is exactly the type of person the club needs to target and find a meaningful role.

We got so burnt by the Tippett experience, we completely lost our nerve when other players decided to look at other offers. Dangerfield was a year-long disaster, Lever and McGovern tore the place down, and Betts/Jenkins/Sloane/Lynch left us with unsustainable contracts.

Next player who speculates about leaving we should just get on the front foot, accept that they may choose to leave and name our price. We could have taken the wind out of the sails if we just said:

"Dangerfield is a required player and we have a very good contract in front of him, but if he chooses to play elsewhere, we expect his new club to provide us with an appropriate trade given the quality player he is"

"Lever is a required player and we have a very good contract in front of him, but if he chooses to play elsewhere, we expect his new club to provide us with an appropriate trade given the quality player he is"

"Charlie is a required player and we have a very good contract in front of him, but if he chooses to play elsewhere, we expect his new club to provide us with an appropriate trade given the quality player he is"

"Mitch is a required player and we have a very good contract in front of him, but if he chooses to play elsewhere, we expect his new club to provide us with an appropriate trade given the quality player he is"

Fortunately for us for Lever and Gov we got a fair trade for them.

We should have sent Danger to the draft if the Cats wanted him that badly. A gutless Crows decision.

The contracts for Betts/JJ and Lynch were just so wrong. Sloane I can understand, say what you will but he has been a solid A class player for us (not elite) and a solid team player and also a great person in terms of character. No scandals of him being a f**kwit. His contract while a year too long, I can see why we did what we did for him.

Plus do a ROO and say we will match any offers to 500K

Jy Simpkin goes alright in the midfield. Didnt think he would be much more than a half forward in his draft year. Out of contract in 2022.

Is exactly what Gallucci could be if he pulled his head in. Article out recently that says Simpkin is always the first one into the club reviewing his footage and last to leave.

You couldn't pay most players enough to come to us at the moment. We need to show there is hope even if it is a few years away. Even Carlton at the worst looked like they could be on the verge of turning it around.

We've never had cap space before because we've always seen ourselves as in Finals Mode.

Brimming with talent therefore paid accordingly. Salary cap bursting at the seams.

This is the first time we've acknowledged that we're off the pace. Should surely affect our payscale

Do we just get to re-set all of our contracts now? We're locked into stupid deals.

The core of our stupidity is that we've always paid people based upon past performance, not future. If you've been a good servant, a cub man, you'll get a fist full of cash for it even if you're quite obviously right about to be done.

Up and coming kids havent 'earned' it yet.

This is the complete opposite of the way a sophisticated football club operates. Good for the boys though- the old boys- the cosy seniors.

Brown was dirt cheap, I have no problem with that. Frampton probably was as well.

I agree on Sloane, We went over board with him like we did with Betts, Tex and Lynch.

sloane pens a pub with Roo. Join the dots on that 12 year deal.
tex took a pay cut to keep blokes like lever. But the club took a stupid gamble on his broken body.
Betts. They thought he was unbreakable and would play 400 games like Harvey. Stupid extension.
lynch was structurally our most important player at our peak. Not as silly as it might read, but we don’t know the ins and outs of all this shit.

until Roo goes on radio of course..

Most of the names thrown up make sense, like Hurn, but I really think Edwards would be the one. Super well respected, comes from a successful program where he played through the shitty years, SA boy, and always got the absolute best out of himself. Understated achiever with a bit left in the tank, playing a role that won't stifle the development of the next generation too much.

In terms of youth, Hately has to be the obvious one that looks attainable, maybe Graham. I would be throwing money at McCluggage and Taranto. Think we should be looking at Melbourne and WB, there seem to be some players there that could be enticed with the right offer. Brayshaw, Viney, McLean off the top of my head.

Ok lets say the AFC haven't totally AFC'd it and do have the cap space that there clearly should be given the state of our list, I'd be targeting one/some of:

- Hately and Green from GWS. Both look very good, and potentially could be looking for greater opportunity given the quality at the Giants.
- Rozee from Port. For the lols. Also a fairly decent player, clearly.
- A senior player or two from another club identified as being able to help improve our reasonably bad player culture. I have no clue who'd be well suited from the outside looking in, but I'm thinking of a Brad Ebert, Luke Shuey, (Sydney's) Kennedy type. I mean, why the heck would they come to the Crows, right? Never know your luck with a late career sweetheart deal though. Clearly we trimmed our list a bit too hard, and we need a touch more on field leadership to bring on the youth otherwise we could be the next Carlton or Melbourne.

Funnily enough I wanted him with our first pick when we went Gooch
Wouldn’t be against it, at least adds some size and aggression to the lack of midfield we have ... if he came cheap enough
I really think we just need to go to the draft

I wouldn't exclusively go to the draft. We're going to need older talent too to make us more competitive in the short term.

Last 2 years appear to be reasonable drafts atm. This year we currently have a great hand with the opportunity to draft some F/S and NGA.

Next year you’d expect a reasonably low pick. I’d wait until it looks like we’re going to be heading back into the 8.

I think give where we are placed the likelihood anyone os going to come across (of any real talent) is low. As such, I think we should be focusing on the draft and also our coaching stocks. To that end - anyone think that someone like Shaun Burgoyne is who we should tagetting? Proven champion, no previous Crows history, incredible skills and (if he starts next year) wont be long removed from the game (and clarko’s IP).

Yep. Why is this so hard.

Cameron, Gov and Lever got us good reward though.
Cameron was never going for more than pick 12.
Gov is not worth a first rounder anymore.
Lever would not be worth two firsts now.
It's just our fault for using those picks poorly bar Fogarty.
Spotlight needs to go on Reid and Hamish for this.
Gibbs should never have been traded for as much as he was.
2018 should have traded up for Rozee or drafted Butters and Duursma over who we actually took.
