When is this insane idea of a nightwatchman ever going to end? It is the single most unsuccessful tactic in cricket and works every time there is a blue moon. Perfect pitch, perfect light, popgun bowling, and we need to protect a batsman? From what???!!!!!

it made sense when we had Gillespie who averaged similiar deliveries per innings to a decent batsman, but had no attacking strokes. But he was basically the most successful nightwatchman in the history of the game.

From himself

Nearly averages 50 in test cricket but lets sort his innings.

In India he has 195 runs at 24.37
In England it is 138 at 23
In SA it is 543 at 90.50
In UAE (against Pak) it is 239 at 59.75
In the West Indies it is 171 at 28.50

At home in Australia it is 1565 at 55.89

In summary 6 centuries in Australia, 3 in SA and 1 in the UAE.

At home with AO removed (due to it being a road)

1112 runs at 50.54 with 2 tons removed.

I'll let people make their own minds up, but on the surface the esteem the ch9 commentary box holds him in (looking at you Slater) seems a bit out of kilter with his actual performances.
don't let facts ruin it.
