Footscray were originally on the Market Reserve in Barkley Street near Geelong Road and wanted to move to the Botanical Gardens Reserve but the cricket club, that had tenure there would not allow it. They previously were granted limited access in 1880 but were not allowed to play football there.
The Botanical Gardens Reserve was also known as the Western Reserve and there are still trees from those gardens present in the vicinity.
When the club joined the VFA in 1886 it amalgamated with the cricket club and played its first match there later in the year.
C.E. Lovett (Charlie) was instrumental in getting the club and the ground secured.
