His kicking has no penetration. They float. Makes it hard for the fowards.

love that he is carrying the ball more now.
At the rate of improvement that he has shown so far, he’ll be delivering low 60m bullets into our forward line by the end of next year. I really rate him. He’s our best young player since Selwood/Hawkins.

Watch the goal he kicked from outside 50- low and flat, never rose above half post height- and then try and tell me his kicks lack penetration.
Totally.
However, the way Scott was talking about him post-match had me worried that he was no certainty to retain his spot for finals. Said something like there's "no guarantees". I may have been misreading it. Maybe more along the lines of no guarantees he'll become a superstar. But with the selection squeeze it made me wonder.
I'll cry if he gets dropped.

Not sure the huge fear factor is warranted about Melbourne?? They are 5 wins 6 losses since the 10 game mark of the year, and got out of jail tonight… could easily be 4 wins 7 losses.

They are looking very average.
If Melbourne had the gears - they would use them. They are already playing their best footy right now. And really it’s not even a form thing - they are a very predictable team now. They just set up a certain way that can be exploited. They constantly look for their best 4 players. May is unbelievable at reading long bombs into their d50. He’s got no chance against short bullets that cut angles.

They are currently being outcoached and won’t magically become better in finals

Yep. They've been worked out. I'm not buying the they're in 'bad form' line. How could a premiership contender be in bad form since round 10? 12-weeks of bad form? I don't think so. They've been worked out.

So what is wrong with our midfield that they need to feed Cameron to get the ball forward? I can see a final against a good team where we keep entering the 50 and the ball rebounds as Hawk can’t jump, Rohan can’t hold his grabs, the defence out marks us, and smalls Stengle, Miers and Close can’t get into the game.
18 goals today, 12 wins on the trot, Cameron second in the Coleman, Hawkins third, Stengle over 40, etc etc suggests we are doing ok with how he works up and back.

I'm not sure why you're put out by any of this.

Early in the game after I think Miers hand passed to Stengle very instinctively I noticed that. Those three are really started to gel together, not just with the talls.
We have multiple chains towards goals now. The Miers, Close, Stengle chain is the one that causes us to go into ballistic mode. It's a sight to behold when that trio starts to motor together.

It’s almost like some supporters want us to go back to predictable conservative football that is found out in finals and then complain that our players and coaches didn’t think out of the box.

What will be the next opinion? That Blicavs goes back to defending? That Hawkins stops taking Ruck contests in our forward 50? That Miers and other small forwards stay in our F50?

Maybe it’s their own fears manifesting. It’s certainly not being observant of how we actually play and what are significant points of difference - that other teams are finding as near impossible to plan against.

Richmond will be licking their lips at the prospect of playing them in week 1. And that would be one of my biggest worries. Richmond has experience and heart. And scariest of all - self belief.

Melbourne might just play Richmond into premiership contention.

Completely agree. I have the Tigers as our biggest threat for all the reasons you mentioned.

Melbourne have been in poor form no doubt but they’d beat Richmond in an EF by 5 goals. Tigers better chance of knocking off the overrated Lions in QLD.
Hope so!!

Then again, my feelings don’t matter - our boys are playing with a lot of self belief and wouldn’t care who they play. Looking like Nadal at the French open. Ominous.

So Rhys abductor “injury” will be find for the finals and he can get managed next week without it seeming arrogant (he should be cherry ripe by Finals time) and it will give Cegs a chance next week to keep in the mix as a back up in case of emergency.

I think given the pre finals bye we will start to see the “best 22” (it is not as if they need to worry about “match ups” against WC) other than where they are genuinely worried about niggles.

Smith and Duncan rested this week will come back in (with Cegs) so need to find 2 more to come out. To me that will be menagola and maybe they might make Atkins sub to give his a chance of a rest?

I have given up calling for Hawke to be rested (he is on longest playing streak in the AFL) and I don’t think they will now want him having almost 3 weeks without footy into finals unless he needs body recovery and a block of fitness work?

Will be less rather than more changes this week as we start to fine tune the best 22

Gryan Miers tonight:

21 disposals
2 goals
7 marks
7 i50s
8 score involvements
7 rebounds
432 metres gained
Gryan’s flyin’.

He has built form so nicely in the back half of this year.

Hawkins was never going to be rested unless, he's one of the players that's a lock for pre season games when everyone else is still ramping up for the season, and either not playing or playing limited minutes. He'll stay out there the whole game.

who is the young pale skinny bloke with long brown hair who has kicked 2 bombs from outside 50m the last 2 weeks? (because i must have thought it was the wrong guy)
Um yeah i wasnt talking about distance. Speed of ball through the air. His are slow loopy kicks. He aint no riccardi, issac smith or mitch duncan even though he can kick just as long.

kicking ability is the most underrated skill in football. Its staggering how undervalued it is given the game is called football. most only rank it on two criteria. Distance and accuracy arent the only criteria which we rank kicking.

The issue for them from the very beginning of the season has been that they've struggled to put big scores on the board.
I wouldn't say they've been worked out. Their game just relies heavily on creating very high pressure up the ground which is hard to maintain for 22 rounds.
They also rely a lot on their 5 big stars who have pretty much all been injured at points.
They could get it all back together and be a massive threat.
