Pretty good presser by Ken, I liked "we haven't achieved anything yet".

The only addition would have been in answer to "what would you like to see in the next block of games?"

"A home game in the prison bars!"

I also liked,

'We understand that we’ve got a good position on the ladder this year but the success of a football club is long-term success - it’s not one season or twelve games.'

Importantly someone at the club also liked it because it features on the Club website.

GEELONG v PORT ADELAIDE (Paul Koulouriotis Cup)

Friday August 14, 7.50pm at Metricon Stadium

How to watch on Fox Footy: Channel 504 from 7pm, hosted by Garry Lyon with Nick Riewoldt, Jonathan Brown, Alastair Lynch and Jon Ralph (followed by First Crack with Tom Morris, Nick Dal Santo and Cameron Mooney).

Cats’ burning question: Is Chris Scott coaching better than ever?

Melbourne champion Garry Lyon thinks so, with Scott’s Cats surging to third on the ladder with the second-best percentage in the league after smashing St Kilda. Saints great Nick Riewoldt pointed out that Scott and the Cats weren’t necessarily blitzing the competition with their own trademark style. Rather, Riewoldt told On The Couch that Geelong was impressing by its ability to take away their opponents’ strengths, highlighting wins over Melbourne and St Kilda, as well as the loss to West Coast. Riewoldt labelled Scott “Chris Belichick”, saying: “You look at teams all across the competition and you want to identify a style or identity. Bill Belichick in the NFL and the New England Patriots, their identity was they were almost chameleons and they adapted to tae away the strength of the opposition every week – and I can see a bit of that in the way Chris Scott is coaching.”

Power’s burning question: Is their reliance on Charlie Dixon too great?

It feels somewhat blasphemous to talk the Power down after that win over Richmond, but what has emerged in the aftermath is the reliability they have in Dixon. He’s the reliable Power rock that’s allowed coach Ken Hinkley to stop spinning the magnets and give specific players specific roles for an entire season, meaning Robbie Gray can now play primarily across half-forward, Travis Boak primarily in the midfield and Hamish Hartlett almost exclusively off half-back. Without Dixon, his 21 goals and his insanely good aerial ability, the Power wouldn’t be having the scoreboard dominance they’ve had. But what if he has a quiet game? David King told First Crack: “I just have concerns where if you have a night where you get a good match-up on Charlie and he doesn’t have the influence that he needs to have, what’s next? What do you fall back to? It’s just a little asterisk for me. I’d love to see them get more uncontested marks on the lead in the forward line and be a bit easier for them to keep it ticking on the scoreboard.”

Fox Footy expert tipsters’ verdict: Geelong 6 — Port Adelaide 5

What shits me about this that Hartlett, Boak and Robbie have pretty much played in the same positions irrespective of Dixon.

Boak up forward had nothing to do with Dixon. Hartlett has been at half back for 5 years. Robbie has been predominantly in the forwardline (if anything he has been a little less one on one deep than previous years).

No doubt Dixon is a gun, and we would not be a better team without him. Same as Dunstall if he wasn’t playing at full forward for the Hawks.

David King sucks.

Its just bullshit from King. We were lauded for the way we dismantled Melbourne, and that was with Dixon having 5 touches and being soundly beaten by May. It allowed Georgi to get off the leash with support from Rozee and Westhoff. We aren't a single avenue to goal team so this is some hot take.

Monty and Schoey use their team selection strategy on Ken ;)

is it any coincidence that the changes start making sense, and we start winning games?
Who would have thought playing enough talls, not going back to out form plodders for multiple games in a row and not playing 16 in defense with no one to kick to in the forward line when possession was won, would work? :drunk:

Fast run and gun team vs slower possession, chip around, take lots of uncontested marks team.

Port contested mark ave per game = 11.2 v oppo 8.7, uncontested mark ave per game = 60.7 v oppo 50.4
Geelong contested mark ave per game = 7.4 v oppo 7.6, uncontested mark ave per game = 70.4 v oppo 47.9

These graphics below are from On the Couch the other night.

Jono Brown confirmed my thinking of the 2018-19 strategy that we were just kicking it to the bloody shithouse too often when we entered inside 50.

"(Those stats show) a game style that was sound, but the bottom stat there, just couldn't score when inside 50, but add Charlie Dixon ........ They're more central though aren't they. Remember when that period a couple of years ago they wanted to kick long and wide to the boundary. They're not going long and wide this year. Even if Dixon doesn't mark it, he's such a commanding presence, and the ball is going there (points right in front of himself)."

Then there is a discussion about the pressure from the small forwards as a result.

Charlie's important but its more than that. It's Marshall, Georgiades, Hoff the first few games and now Ladhams. How many times have we written in game day threads and review threads our forwards have to stop competing with each other. Yes bloody frustrating, but it's because we have finally started to regularly put the ball in a dangerous spot, not kicking it wide to the blood shithouse.

Lyon mentions how we couldn't score and just before Brown said "The're more central though aren't they," Lyon said, "remember when they were on a roll and they got worked out. They couldn't move the footy. They couldn't move it from their back half. That's why when you look at that stuff ( the graphic above) a lot of forward half stuff, which is fantastic, but they have take it on .... Dixon is the reference point ....."

20 minutes before the above discussion they talked about and had vision of how Geelong play, and put up some graphics. They won't change how they play tomorrow and Port is exactly the side they will try this on to stop our most potent way of playing.

So their achilles heel, pts from centre bounces, we have to exploit.

Against Richmond we were 8-0 for centre clearances at quarter time and 10-1 I remember from the replay in the 2nd quarter and finished off being 20-5.

So Lycett and Ladhams have to exploit Stanley, and Blicavs when he rucks. Need Boak, SPP, Robbie, Rocky, Butters and Wines to repeat their Richmond performance.

Like I suggested against Martin, Wines takes Dangerfield when he is in the guts and Jonas takes Dangerfield when he is forward. Danger's speed on a lead is a worry, but its the 1 on 1's that Jona can outmuscle him that I don't think others can. Danger is spending more time forward.

But Geelong's defence like to have 8 and 9 play there and try and counter attack of stopping other teams inside 50's. 2 players we have to clamp down on are Menegola and Tom Stewart.

Menegola is having a great season and is covering a lot of ground and is regularly getting back and helping out their defenders. 91% of his game time is running up and down the wing. Sounds like a job for Duurs and follow him everywhere don't let him become that loose man in defence. Maybe Motlop gives Duurs a chop out.

Stewart is the guy who takes their most intercept marks as well as chip to uncontested marks, from other defenders. I'd give Georgie the role to stick on him, don't let him get away from you too often and jump into him whenever you get the chance.

Dixon and Ladhams take Taylor and Henderson, and Blicavs will be down there a fair bit. Actually that will be interesting to see what happens with Blicavs if Georgi takes Stewart. Maybe that's where we can exploit having a small on a tall and put the ball onto the ground or if Blicavs is jumping into packs the small has to get into position to crumb the spillage.

Its gonna be a different style of game to Richmond, but still should be just as engrossing.

Get your lungs ready, we will be abusing the TV screen a lot tomorrow.

Like the changes. Tough challenge.
My biggest concern is our mindset doesn’t seem to be as focused like it was against Richmond but we’ll know 5 minutes into the game.

Why do you say that? I have not seen, heard or read anything to say our mindset isn't focussed.

The different dialogue coming out of the club. It’s not necessarily bad, just a different lead up. Probably a gut feel more than anything else. You wouldn’t think we’d be taking Geelong easy.

We're 3rd in the competition for marks inside 50. Of the players playing tomorrow night, Dixon averages 2.6, Georgiades 1.6, Gray 0.73, Butters 0.64, Ladhams 0.6 and Motlop 0.57 - that's 6 players who average a mark inside 50 every two games or better. But that's not surprising since we are 1st in the comp for inside 50s.

You want to know who the best in the competition for marks inside 50 is? Geelong. Hawkins averages 2.82, Rohan 1.4, Stanley 1.25, Menegola 0.73, Dangerfield 0.73, Ratugolea 0.67 and Mitch Duncan 0.6 - 7 players who average a mark inside 50 every two games or better.

What makes this even more surprising is Geelong is only 7th in the competition for inside 50s. Which means they are getting those marks inside 50 fairly easily.

This is the type of game where our defence is going to be the key. With Richmond, it was all about how much pressure we could put them under. Against Geelong, it's about knowing when to press and when to roll back. Get it inside 50 as quick as possible to Dixon or Ladhams etc. and hope for them to mark it or bring the ball to ground for our crumbers, but then pull back the defensive zone to around the edge of the centre square. You can still be a forward half team, but there's a time and a place to be kamikaze with pressure (Richmond) and more measured (Geelong).

Also, McKenzie, Hartlett and Farrell should be encouraged to take as many pings on the run from outside 50 as possible. If Geelong likes to roll back from the wing and play 8 in defence, let's show them what happens when they try it.

If you want a good listen, check out this interview with Bass.
Goes into a lot of detail about Dixon’s goal kicking and also discussion of Boak’s footy preparation being beyond elite, being Olympic standard, and his effect on SPP.
