Who is Player A? Obviously B is Cook.

Gary Ablett Jr

Obviously not trying to say Cook will be as good, or close, or anything. Just to say kids are often quiet in terms of possessions when they're learning and sometimes need time.

Sure, true of most players, your JHF types aside. Not that it's a fair comparison for Cook at all to be compared to Ablett, but Ablett was 18 when he played those first 17 games. This is Cook's 4th year in the AFL system, not his first.

Hopefully he develops just like that, though.

This is a dumb exaggeration. McHenry's not a good AFL player but part of the reason he isn't good is because he doesn't get the ball often enough. He also isn't clean enough and fumbles far too often, but it's not true that his average possession is a net negative to the team.

The one time he got 20+ disposals in the last two seasons he got 5 coaches votes and was one of the better players on the field.
Fair enough.

I mostly think McHenry does decent things once he has the ball - the issue is the fumbling and delays by hand that come with when he's trying to take possession.

Gary Ablett Jr played his 17th game in round 5 of his second season.

Brayden Cook is in his fourth season.

Can you compare GAJs first 5 matches in his fourth season to Brayden’s output this year?

If you like. Though you seem to have missed the point about it not being an Ablett comparison.

4th year, first 5 games:
4, 7, 9, 12 and 3 kicks
10, 2, 2 ,7 , 5 handballs

Possessions: 14, 9 11, 19, 8.

Both kicked 5 goals in first 5 games of their 4th season too. Ablett had played over 50 by then though.

Gotta be something wrong with the Gabba turf

Docherty also did his at the Gabba
Hard to say if the turf had much to do with it, Coleman’s & Docherty’s were definitely caused by contact from an opponent and had nothing to do with the ground. I couldn’t remember Ashcroft’s but looking at it just now it’s a bit inconclusive as he was pushed slightly off balance by an opponent.

Kind’ve wish you could blame it on the turf as that would be another reason to demolish that tired old ground and build a new stadium elsewhere in Brisbane.

What I think the more interesting connection is though is that McCarthy, Gardiner, Doedee and Docherty had all already previously done ACL’s before so it probably falls more into line with the thinking that it’s more to do with genetic makeup and some people are just genetically more susceptible to it always occurring.

Alright you've sold me. Cook is about half as good as Ablett. I'll take that.

Did Ablett get dropped after a 16 possession game where he looked half decent?

Nah, we need to win this game and the players should be bang up for it. We beat Brisbane last year at home when they were flying.

That was our roosting week.

We have no expectations, going to focus on the kids and not stress the results this year.

Hate excuses, but with ten of our top 22 out with long term injuries we are very gettable.

Hopefully we get through with no more injuries. Please.

Interesting that when teams get injuries during a game, the remaining general lift to counter. The problem becomes the following week as you can’t manufacture it. Away from home adds another layer, they don’t have a great record at Adelaide Oval (3-9).

In last Sunday’s game, Brisbane slowed the game down. Not sure they will be able to do it this week.
