Latest news and rumours

Done deals:

  • Zane Trew, Jamaine Jones and Jordyn Baker delisted

Ongoing discussions:

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Sept 11 Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

They dont have to be insurance. They are kids who we rated highly enough who are yet to get proper exposure to the midfield.
We have already added Graham and are soon to add Baker.
Hewetts latest foot injury was in the opposite foot wasnt it?(or at least an unrelated injury)
Im not saying we never need to draft a mid again, but this year in particular, we dont have to.

Oh yeah we are set for mids - in what world? Wildly off

I'm not really after what people value him at, because that's really subjective. More interested in what other players in his circumstances were worth in previous trades.

Neal-Bullen, 2 and a bit years older for an early second would make it reasonable for Baker to be worth a late first, but it's a single data point.

You were disputing talent though - I’d take ANB over Baker if they were the same age. Agree the value gap is narrowed due to Neal-Bullen getting on a bit

No tweets from tonight's episode of Footy 'Classified' Furnace about the Eagles pick being up for grabs. Did any brave soul watch? Was it brought up at all? Promising signs if it wasn't.
They said something like "potentially" up for grabs but hard no to Carlton.

FWIW not really many other updates.

Mate no offence but you know f*ck all about what Pyke & the board think so stop acting like you do. Your a guy on a online forum who’s entitled to your opinion but stop talking like it’s a fact. Give it a break (You’re also not the only one)

Final predictions as get rolling:

Darling for a disappointingly late pick that will disappear into the tail end of a pick swap/thrown into a more complex deal. - Got the pick right, hopefully we can use it on Champion.

Baker and a pick in the 30s for 14. - Won’t be 14 but I suspect something like this will happen for the F1 received for Barrass. Stil confident it’ll be slight overs, despite the uncontracted status, due to Clarke’s Richmond history.

Jack Graham takes the 4 years on the table. Tick (but not exactly hard).

Barrass for 14 and F2 - 14 gone but I think it’s F1 (Hawthorn) and F2 (Carlton) now.

Clurey for something late. - Seems unlikely.

No Garcia (stays at Dogs) or Robertson (goes to some pointless Vic club). - Tick on Garcia and standing by this for Robertson - I’ll say St Kilda.

We retain 3 (4) for now… - Staying with this but no guarantee it makes it to draft night.

Checking in on my initial predictions.

Will add one more - no other players coming our way (other than Baker) - but we will have a few train-ons. Parfitt won’t be one of them, he’ll stay in Victoria.

He's nominated us because we offered him more money and years.

No way should we pay overs for him, but that doesn't mean we should **** him around to get him for free. A second rounder + something else should get it done
Weak argument..that's being nice, we offered a deal and money, we did not once promise a 1st round pick... Richmond are fu*king him, they were offered market value and said no.

We have competent inside mids, Reid, Baker, graham, Hall, Hutch, and Hewett is enough to work with for 1 more year alongside Yeo and Kelly.
We have grunt and enough bodies to get by.

We have basically 0 strong outside ball users, Maric has a great kick but lacks run, Ginbey can run but isnt a great kick, etc. Not a lot to work with. We also have very little elite in the pipeline for the backline.

Not going into it all again as ive been through it here before. More than 1 way to go about it is all im going to say
"Competent" doesn't cut it. We're trying to build for a flag, not mid table. You take the elite mids while you have the picks to get them.

We need elite talent in the backline too mate. The backline isnt just a place for failed mids and failed KPFs anymore
Sure, and you get them when you have the right draft picks. When you have a top 5 pick, in a draft full of elite mids, you take an elite mid.

In the nicest possible way, you have no idea. No club is doing what you suggest.
