I know we all go around circles here with these discussions.

But I can’t help but wonder if we have all written Warlaw off too early.

If he gets to pick 3 and the club has had a good interview with him and he’s tested well at the combine we would be mad to not take the risk on him.

The kid is the best player in the draft when he’s on the park. Better than Ashcroft.

Has a little bit of Judd about this story I know Judd was shoulders and Warlaw Hammies but still.

Imagine trading pick 2 out and he goes on to be the A grader from this draft.

I agree with you on Wardlaw. I think we should take him at 2. I've watched his footage and you are right he looked bloody good a real animal and built like a truck. Huge quads. Good disposal, I reckon he could go inside and outside with his speed, he can mark too. Given the crappy deals being proposed for the pick split I say get WARDLAW at 2. He is best available, so just do it and back the club in with his hammies and homesickness same as we did with Judd. If the club spends too much time looking at the risks they may miss whats right in front of them. Pick split looks to have gone to sh#t so just take Wardlaw ffs.

* Only going off all videos I can find, so not really an informed opinion I suppose but he looks, CLEARLY, the best player from this draft for mine.
If he stays fit, I think he'll be right up there with the best from the last 5 years. I really like him.

Finally caught up on the last 10 pages 🤣.

Re: Wardlaw, we need to remember that the u18 kids are really poorly managed by many different sources - school, club, representative level etc. I'm not sure the hammy issues are as big as some people are saying. I mean, why wouldn't you put yourself in cotton wool? He's going to be in the top few draft picks taken regardless so why risk it.

Fact we gotta go back 9 years to Yeo to talk successes despite many trades since speaks volumes

Getting premiership ruckman Vardy for basically nothing?

Getting Sam Mitchell for basically nothing?

Getting three second rounders off Gold Coast in 2017 for what ended up being a two-pick downgrade?

Getting this year’s pick 26 off Port for a two-pick downgrade to get the player we would have taken at the original pick —- so effectively getting pick 26 for free?

Getting Sydney’s future second in return for doing sneaky trades with them to hide their picks to avoid bids, which resulted in the AFL changing the rules?

I get the haggling over Sharpe, that’s what any competent organisation should be doing even if they end up accepting your 2nd

The absolute rollover with Bowes is *ed in the head. Even for Geelongs future 1st that’s a sweet deal but taking a future pick in the mid 30’s is ridiculous

What makes it extra ****ed is the idea that they floater a trade option that basically a good 8 teams wanted, did that not tell them the terms of that offer sucked and could they have not used that scenario to get a better deal. Pick 7 and Bowes for Norths 2nd rounder would have worked

I don't see the issue to be honest. The new club that extends him to bring his average salary down is still going to have to offer at least whatever his current value is in those extra years. Bowes isn't going to agree to less than what he thinks his own value is - like any other player signing an extension.

People are acting like GC have just given Geelong an absolute gift. Maybe it was generous given they had a few clubs interested, but they do get something out of this. They bought Bowes on Afterpay and decided to sell him instead of pay the bill.
The issue is renegotiating the contract to suit your own salary cap. He’s a negative asset with that contract which is why GC are offloading him with a high pick. Geelong should have to cop the same contract otherwise they don’t get the good asset. If they can’t fit 850k into the cap next year then they don’t deserve pick 7. This sort of deal is for the Hawthorns of the world who don’t really have anyone to pay for the next 2 years or so, so they’re willing to “buy” a high pick with that cap space. Not for the reigning premiers to do some fancy accounting to squeeze in a decent player on a more favourable yearly contract and take the pick, so they have more cap space to fill their boots.

I feel a bit sorry for the player involved. Pretty humiliating to have the club you signed a contract with bribing or paying another club with a draft pick to take you off their hands. It is not his fault that GC overpaid him nor that they miscalculated their cap space.

Agree that Geelong have no right to "smooth" out his contract. If it were us doing this after the 2018 flag there would have been uproar in Victoria.

Oh bullshit.

Just because one player out of a cohort has slipped dramatically, doesn't validate your theory.
Haha I thought the same thing!

From previous years feels like the top 20 from their u17 year is never set, roughly 10 of those will stay in the top 20 the following year and 5 will come from nowhere (as they develop rapidly late) and 5 improve so go from 20-35 range into top 20. For the 10 that come out of the top 20, most still stay around 20-40 range but a few will completely disappear ala Broadbent and Lemmey.

The assessment of next years crop is based on how many play as underagers and how they perform, and for next year they've shown plenty!!!

Another fail by the AFL. Gold Coast should have been alllwed to delist him and use the stretch provision like NBA to move the 1.6 mill contract out over 5 years fo example

Some people are notoriously more difficult to work with as they always seem to want to win. Others understand a neutral result is actually a win
I take it that Port Adelaide are the notoriously more difficult to deal with! From what we've seen, they have only presented deals in which they win!

If 27 for Willie and 39 is a real offer, that is an absolute piss take. Puts Willie at pick 52.

The other reported offer of 2 and Willie for 8 and future first is another example.

I won't bother mentioning the cats, as looks like Mackie has a doctorate in the Wells negotiation tactics school.

Cats are at it again. This is why respect in trading has gone out the window with a lot of clubs the last few years. Port following in the Cats footsteps. Eagles need to get tough with a few clubs and if a player of ours leaves not just accept anything. Rioli needs to be 2nd round pick or Kangas will pick him up in the PSD.

Usually the PSD doesn't happen but I think we are about to see a few players end up there frustrated over the coming years with how some clubs are behaving. Cats are disgraceful to deal with and I'm glad someone's finally called them out on it.
I think the worst part is a few bad clubs, ruin it for all.

Just wait til Tanner Bruhn reaches Geelong at pick 18 in the PSD on a 5 year 4 million dollar. Players have taken a hit to fit him in by changing over a Large almond milk latte to a Regular in order to create the 2.5 mill needed to fit him in

I never really rated Jetta.

And (you are probably better to say if this is correct or not) it often seems that most of the sliders are talls. Generally mids who dominate under age go on to be near the top of their draft class the following year (Hewett... I know! and inb4 someone mentions Tom Swift).

And for 2023, there are quite a few quality talls - but the absolute elite end has a couple of very exciting mids from what I understand. Usually if they are up there with the 18yo's as mids when they are 17 (or turning 17) they go on and become very good players in the AFL.

See i dont think we have a flag in 2018 without him. He could slingshot us out of defence with run and then weight a mm perfect kick to a running player. Weve missed him since hes gone.

Maligned for his casual approach to the game, but his rebound from his defence was sublime when he got it right.

Him pulling Liam Ryan aside at three quarter time in the GF to reassure him after he dropped a mark was invaluable as well. Ryan responded with the goal assist to JK and that big mark as part of the game winning play.

For the next 2 years we should draft South Australians only and then refuse to deal with Port if any of them want to return home.

Offer every player they have a 4 year 2.4 mill then demand a salary dump trade

Bonner and 1st rounder for future third rounder seems like a good deal

So in summary no news. next week i guess.

I dont understand why people are upset with clubs proposing low offers, it in their best interests. No club is abliged to accept any offer, and can freely negotiate. As for the press- they are paid to sell advertising so they need to have wild headlines to attract attention. I dont look at or pay for advertising so i dont look at the press.

I loved that, that was great leadership

And of course Ryan was involved in our final scoring chain in the last quarter and we all know what happened next

Yeah, I think that's a good call.

Talls do develop at a completely different rate, some early and some later. Both Lemmey and Broadbent were around the 200cm mark at 16 and others were still growing!

Hewett is unique, sometimes you get a dominant junior who has dominated all the way through but in their final year the others have caught you at a rapid rate and instead of being top 3 your top 20. This was Tyler Sonsie the year prior, so so dominant through his younger years but when it came to his final year ends up going pick 26.
