Sorry but thats a "I'm going to impress everyone that i'm a team man-try hard" declaration.

Oh lawd, there really are some absolute tossers on this forum

Great knock and good on him for declaring. He is content with his score, it's all just penis enlarging after a certain point.

If it rains tomorrow I wonder if anyone will eat their words. Winning the test is the only thing that matters.

Mathematically it makes no sense, we are saying we need 220 overs to bowl at them but the lead is 460, at modern scoring rates that will be passed in 120 overs.

Why leave yourself the outside chance of having to chase down 100-120 late on day 5 when you can make the runs quicker and easier on a dead day 3 track.

Exactly this

Only reason I can think to declare now is the chance of rain in the next two days

Forecast for tomorrow...

Friday 6 January
Summary
Min 19
Max 24
Shower or two clearing.
Sydney area
Cloudy. Isolated showers until afternoon. Winds south to southeasterly averaging up to 35 km/h.

Pretty understandable declaration if they expect to miss periods through rain. We already have a MASSIVE lead.
