I agree but I blame the AFL rule changes for incidents like this. Players in both situations attacking the ball and tackling/defending are damned if they do/damned if they don'tJetta deserves to get knocked out, stupid decision IMO. If you fake to punch someone in the kidney they'll raise an elbow to protect them self, Jetta headbutted McStay. The fu** else was the bloke supposed to do
Finally some sense on the matterI agree but I blame the AFL rule changes for incidents like this. Players in both situations attacking the ball and tackling/defending are damned if they do/damned if they don't
For instance if Jetta attacked the ball like players/kids were taught pre 2010ish. By coming in with his body turned and his hip and shoulder leading to protect himself, he runs the risk of accidentally hitting someone leading in head first and getting suspended himself
So naturally instead he leads head first which leaves himself open to being hit in the head (which funnily enough is what the AFL rules tried to stop). And in this case he runs straight into the Brisbane player and injures himself and gets the Brisbane player suspended (who basically stood still and did nothing wrong)
I was honestly ready to agree with you because Jetta's technique is poor, but watching the replay you can see that putting his head over the ball was his best option and McStay went in wantonly.I'd have to really look at it again, I thought he was using his elbow more so to protect his ribs which is the natural action. When it happened my natural reaction wasn't at all thinking it was dirty, my natural reaction blamed Jettas technique. I'm obviously not biased to Melbourne so to me it was my pure reaction. If I'm wrong then so be it but I didn't find it in the slightest bit malicious
He didn't duck his head down to avoid contact tho, he put it down to collect the ball and was instantly bumped in it as he was coming up. 100% the onus is on McStay in that situation to make a tackle and not bump.
I know its different from the wild west days of the 80's and 90's and probably not your ideal version of football but it is what it is. It's clear cut.
Even your mate David King, a bloke who played in that era, said McStay was millimetres from putting Jetta in a wheelchair, times have changed mate. Time to get with the program.
King says the AFL has ‘totally lost control’ after Demon was ‘millimetres from a wheelchair’

Wrong. How is this even an argument? McStay doesn't just run into Jetta, he shifts his weight through his hips to bump even though he sees the player has his head down. It's not even vaguely a grey area lmao
But you then have to assume if you’re running into a contest that the ball gatherer will drop his head. So you have to run in and look to block and run the risk of your opponent doing a little shimmy and getting away or getting a disposal off. It’s like you are expected not to respond with a bump or tackle UNTIL the other player decides what they’re doing.I was honestly ready to agree with you because Jetta's technique is poor, but watching the replay you can see that putting his head over the ball was his best option and McStay went in wantonly.
The video clearly shows him, after he has picked up the ball, dropping his head and running into McStay. I just don’t understand this. Why is McStay in the wrong? He had no idea that Jetta would drop his head. None. The reason players do it is because they know they’ll get a free. Plain and simple.
We need to be penalising players that do this, if you pick up the ball shouldn’t your first response be to look for disposal? If your running head down for the ball and you’re hit in the action of picking it up, then yes, it’s a free to you. But if you’ve taken possession then drop your head, it’s not your free. You need to be penalised. Also, we need to look at the actions of the other player - are they leading in to bump? Are they waiting front on with arms aside? It’s pretty obvious if a bloke is going to go the hit, but if you’re run into and not looking to bump then you can’t be penalised against.
This is going to happen in a final. Someone is going to sniff a chance in front of goal, drop their head into their opponent and get the free. Do we really need the AFL to let it come to that? If you lead into a player with your head, you’ve got to be paid a free against. It’s just pathetic technically. And not to mention dangerous, you’re risking a broken neck for a free kick.
Why put your head down once you’ve picked up the ball?Whatever your thought is on it, if you think Jetta had enough time to see McStay and head charge him like a rhino then McStay had plenty of time to decide not to bump and tackle instead.. . So your argument is invalid either way.
Why put your head down once you’ve picked up the ball?
So you don't take an elbow to the faceWhy put your head down once you’ve picked up the ball?
Sometimes it's the instinctive move to avoid a tackle. Not intentional. Watch a QB under pressure in the pocketWhy put your head down once you’ve picked up the ball?

Spot on, instinct.
No DE is getting a penalty for that kind of high contact on a QB too... so no incentive for the QB to do it.
Where'd you find it?Just saw David King's analysis - he nails it for mine.
David king wants a non contact sport, no doubt it'll be full of crazy vocabulary about how Jetta nearly died.Just saw David King's analysis - he nails it for mine.
You didn’t answer my question. Why bump when you can tackle?
...and win a free kick for holding the ball
A quarter back? You mean the guys that wear helmets?Sometimes it's the instinctive move to avoid a tackle. Not intentional. Watch a QB under pressure in the pocket
So you’d rather take 87kg of Daniel McStay through the middle of your head?So you don't take an elbow to the face
