Some moron on Reddit is trying to claim that Luke Ryan was BOG because of his stat line. I seriously wonder if our supporter base can get any stupider sometimes.
Compared to Pearce today maybe he was lol.. But that's why stats not always reliable. The backs can chip it back and forth to eachother few times in one play and rack up marks and kicks. Doesn't mean much

I didn't play the sport growing up (Cricket and Rugby) and 20 years of watching hasn't significantly helped my technical proficiency.

The vast majority of supporters who rock up to Optus each fortnight (at least 25k-30k) are like me and they'll start not turning up if they don't see changes - it was the lack of personnel changes that turned most people off RTB more than the continual losses from 2016-2019.

I don't know the ins and outs but like others there's a focus on what's changed since last year:
  • Losing Josh Carr as midfield coach appears to have hurt the team more than we thought - losing Chris Scott in 2010 and Brett Kirk in 2015 had an immediate net negative affect in the guts of the ground. Unsure what Joel Corey's midfield strategy is but it's not working.
  • Losing Mundy, Lobb, Logue and Acres has hurt immensely. Posters allude to this often - the reality is we're probably down 5-6 goals each game without them. Lobb was worth 2-3, Logue saved a couple and Mundy set up a couple too. Even so, with all of them still on the list we still probably lose today, against the Saints and maybe beat North - overall we'd still be collectively unimpressed with the start to the year. We are heavily missing Mundy's midfield leadership though.
  • JL + staff - increasingly conservative with selection and game plan. In hindsight, Luke Jackson was a conservative bet compared to backing in your team and hitting the draft and giving pay-rises to important players like Logue and Acres.
Posters here are saying A Pearce isn't a Captain's A-hole - wasn't he the captain for the majority of last year when Fyfe was injured? He's down on confidence but he's not the problem. I doubt any coaches are leaving mid-season so it looks like this is what we're stuck with this year - we've given up future picks for next year but I do think we have enough to potential talent to start building over the next two seasons. We aren't playing finals this year and even if we do we're making up the numbers - therefore what I'd propose at a minimum is:

  1. Erasmus and Johnson to be given the same treatment Brayshaw and Cerra were given - and that is to play every game possible.
  2. Sturt to be given a serious-go now - he's a player who won't continue to improve in Peel and will benefit from strong AFL exposure.
  3. Treacy to be given a run of games after a few more in WAFL - some clear deficiencies to work on but he may get there.
  4. Corbett, Wagner and/or Worner to get a run.
  5. Hamling to come into defence to provide some much needed leadership.
I'm not sure about Carr. But what we replaced him with certainly makes it look that way. We had the same structural problems with Carr but they tended to work on it at training the next week and it used to be alright for a couple of weeks and then the players would go back to their old bad habits again wash, rinse repeat
Jackson was too soon.
Agree our young players should all be given the same opportunity.

From a stats perspective:

  • Equal inside 50s
  • Comfortably beat them in clearances
  • Much lower scoring shots and marks inside 50
  • At one point Healy noted that 6 out of 32 D50 rebounds turned into inside 50s
This isn't a side bereft of talent, despite a few stuff ups from the players. The defensive structure simply doesn't allow scoring from D50 when Freo force the opposition to turn it over.

If I wasn't already bald I'd have lost my hair at the amount of times it was turned over, Freo stream forward and then hesitate as they have literally no one to kick it to. Then as it's being kicked to a teammates' back (who is hauling arse to try to offer something up forward) it gets coughed up, Adelaide pumped it back inside 50 to a disrupted defence, and scored.

Painful.
Yeah, these are really good points. We are not getting smashed at clearances, or at inside 50's. We are simply not moving fast enough from defense, and guys like Luke Ryan, as good as he is, is far too predictable kicking the ball out after a behind.
Hayden Young had a shocker today - which he rarely does, and I think Brayshaw was playing sore.
Fyfe, Brodie and Freddy need to come in next week and we just need to take the game on. We are not far off but really need to go for it with our game style. The game has changed a lot. You can't be conservative anymore in the AFL. It's got to be high risk, high reward.

What should have been a hard fought 2-3 goal win on balance of play to Adelaide turned into a 45 pt belting due to the gap in talent between both forward lines.
Even when we won clearances out of the centre in the second half we still couldn't hit a leading target 20-25 metres away. Tabs was on a lead a couple of times and we kicked 5 metres short of him with the kicker under no pressure.

Collingwood 2021 vibes. Just in the fact that they won a final the year before and then were absolute dogshit the following year despite having largely the same personnel that won that final. Except they made changes to their coaching and managament and look where they are now. We won't have the balls to do that.
We might but who do you get to coach???

Peter Bell is a club killer. Refusing to budge on Acres when it would've cost us so little in the scheme of things, not signing Logue early on. So smug with everything he does it pisses me off. Should've held his ground and refused to trade Lobb. At least Amiss could have been developing with a half competent KPF. And trading everything we had for Jackson and then again on JOM who hasn't been a good player since he left the gold coast.
Hang on in a master move in 2022 he signed up trav colyer for another year after he exited Griff

I constantly rush home from work (my job involves a lot of weekend work), have paid money to have Kayo, only to be consistently denied any pleasure from watching my chosen team of 26 years who let me down year after year (apart from 2013 and that was a nightmare in itself to lose the GF). I am 64 and losing hope of seeing a Premiership in my time.

Bells complete contempt for some players remimds a little of Jerry Krause minus the championships and success...

He covets things we don't have and completely disregards things we do/did have.

Seems the kinda guy that would say players don't win premierships organisations do

All Freo supporters are stupid mate. Every single one. Including me. We voluntarily support this club. We’re all ****.ing stupid. . .

I love your post. Thank you.

People think we’re joking when we say we revolve Freo around our lives but we do. We pay our membership, we buy the merchandise and we support our club. We plan important dates around Freo’s draw. We do everything for the club but they do fuc.k all for us in return. The biggest losers are our families who have to deal with our moods and pain. Money that could buy better clothes for the kids, nicer car for the wife. Bigger house for the family.

I agree with you. I feel nothing now. Take care of your families/friends and just treat Freo the way they’ve been treating us. Like absolute shi.t. Call out what you see and don’t give a crap about fellow Freo supporters who try to spin positives out of turd.

Bell is more scared of player managers than Freo members. That tells you everything about the club. They print money for themselves.

We don’t want or need money, something players/coaches/admin always want more of.

We want a useless silver cup that paying members/supporters don’t even get to keep or even touch.

Couldn't agree more. I'll never forget my high school crush invited me to her birthday party - ditched it to go watch Fremantle lose their first ever final against Essendon. On Monday at school she had a new boyfriend!

The year was 2003, and I had naught but the Shins and the White Stripes on my CD walkman to keep me company.

It's just a game!!!

I've done some serious thinking about our personnel at the moment and pondering whether our football department has made the correct decisions. I still think we have made the right decisions.

We are consistently out-coached at this moment in time.

Easy to be out-coached if the players are continuously out-played.

My normal reply would be to hang in there, but I feel exactly the same.

Gutted. Just seems we follow a club that can't get its act together for longer than a couple of years at a time.

I've been a Freo member since day 1. Pretty sure this is my last year.

It seems ridiculous that our wing situation seems so dire. We had great output from the wings last year. We have 3 young studs who everyone in football could excel at the wing position.

That we let our best performed winger walk is perplexing. I could live with that if we were grooming some of the logical replacements to take his place it none of young, Chapman or Clarke have played a minute of wing even in preseason, even with NOD out. Boggles the mind...

Supporters are in it for the wrong reasons if all they care about is winning a flag. A week or two of celebrations and sore heads and move in to next year.

Much better to enjoy the odd win, try to ignore the losses and enjoy the game. I often enjoy watching neutral games more because of the lack of emotional involvement.

At the end of the day it’s entertainment and if you don’t like the show spend your entertainment dollars on something else.

We thought JL was the answer and would lead us to the promised land. We were WRONG.

Now we’re stuck for years with a totally unimaginative coach who doesn’t react even when we’re being flogged.

We’re going backwards at a breath taking rate!

What rubbish.

It's more than a game and if you feel otherwise you're not a true supporter.
Rubbish. I fully accept that we may not win a premiership for a very long time. It is just a realistic possibility in a very difficult competition. Doesn't mean I don't follow my team passionately.
