The absolute worst thing about modern football is how goals are treated almost disdainfully as this mere byproduct of handwork elsewhere on the field and nothing more.

Forward lines are only there to trap the ball in basically then goals just sort of happen.

Every forward has a litany of tasks and responsibilities beyond actually being expected to kick goals.

Everything's about ball movement ball movement ball movement, but at some point there actually has to be someone there at the end who's responsibility it is to kick goals doesn't there?

Every single time there's lack of goals its always summed up as either lack of opportunity or lack of execution on the part of the midfield, and the forward line, who doesn't get nearly the same attention as the back line or midfield by coaches, is always left off the hook.

Lobb want's to be a forward but has a panic attack everytime he lines up for goal - don't worry it'll sort itself out. Everyone leads to the same space or doesn't lead at all? We didn't lower our eyes enough or didn't put it to good advantage.

It sucks. I hate it. We'll be the same boring team who won't be able to compete with the Hawthorn's (of bygone era) or the Eagles, Richmonds and Port's when it matters if we continue to treat the forward line like it's this beat up car that you just hope get's you from A to B every week. /rant

Thank you for saying this, I was thinking the same thing just this week, maybe today while I was reading the article on Tabs

The line seems to go something like this
“It’s not about kicking goals it’s about playing my role”.... or some corporate rubbish like that
Guess what, it is about kicking goals , last I looked the team with the most goals wins

Cut the crap , just kick goals

Blakely to HBF? I'm sorry but I strongly disagree with this. His disposal tonight was SHOCKING! And not much better the weeks before.

Hand balls to feet.
Kicks to feet.
Missed kicks.
Hand balls to pressure. (This one the most)

I love his in and under contest. But the disposal is not good enough, it's a liability and it breaks down too many possession chains. He has to go unfortunately.
I'd rather play Tom Lamb on our HBF.

Seriously the bloke is ordinary to poor in the middle his pet pos and a dead set spud elsewhere.

A lot of people owe the selection committee on that one.

I made a similar suggestion in the JLo thread and had a lot of disagreement.

I am really concerned about our ability to score.

Yeah I have previously voiced the Collingwood issue where they have had the same thing for the last 3 years basically. Either DeGoey or another mid kicks a bag or they don't score.

Obviously with JLo you have to give the benefit of the doubt - new coach, COVID disruption, injury disruption, young(er) team. We're locked in now so may as well look at the bright side!

I think the thing for me is that's it's a bit discordant to be so enthused about this year so far when it's really much of the same, even in the wins the last couple of weeks.

Nice rant.

I tend to agree with the last bit. We are in no way trending like a Port/Richmond in how we move the ball. They go fast and they go corridor and Richmond especially don't actually care too much about retaining posession which seems to be our focus.

I'm summary, we got totally smashed in the middle in the first quarter. Chasing tail ever since. Clean ball into our 50 destroyed us.

I can think of things to complain about but then again a lot of those complaints reference tactics employed in building the gane plan etc.

Mundy should be elected president of Fremantle.
Henry has been drinking his own bathwater.
Fyfe needs to go back in the middle. A delicate balance but there's no point having a dual Brownlow medalist living on scraps in isolation up forward.
Walters does my head in.
Forward structure too small on a dry day. Completely outmarked.
LOBB NEEDS A REST. HOGAN NEEDS A RUN.
Serong probably needs a rest too.
Hill was poor tonight. Key kicks smothered twice. I'd like to see him on the wing soon and more involved.
I want to whinge about Schulz but that banana attempt was sensational lol.
Bewley and Crowden, I'm still not sold. They just don't have the polish under pressure.

Just a meh night. I trust JLo to make several changes now.
Nicely said.

Man this place gets depressing real quick.

‘Young team that just won 4 games on the trot (I’ll die on that Carlton game hill), has an off week against grand finalists who have been smashed in the media all week and have everything to play for.’

Wouldn’t read about it...

Was at a mates birthday so only saw snippets but lessons seem to be
1) Even gun young kids can’t back it up week after week
2) We won’t be top 4 any time soon without at least 2 of our best 3 KPD ready and available
3) Forwardline needs a lot of work still. Think the coach MIGHT need a bit more than half season to solve ALL the issues at once.

Every team has bad games here and there, especially this year. It’s never has bad or as good as it seems.
Haha. Well said on point three.

I can’t for the life of me work out what the hell David Hale has been teaching the forwards.
From high up in the stands it’s even worse than it seems on tv
half the time they literally stand still hoping the ball will teleport into their arms.
The midfielder has no idea what to do.

then when they do lead, they all run to the same spot...

or the small forwards move into the corridor Where Taberner should be leading...or...

Liam Henry gathers the ball on the wing and all the forwards run away from him...like he can kick like Malcolm Blight..or...

Fyfe finally has his man beat on the lead and can get hit 40 meters out and Bewley bombs to the pocket for an easy spoil against Taberner.

its a complete shit show

Comprehensively beaten by a better team that should be higher on the ladder.

Young ruck and mids got beaten by Coniglio, Taranto, Whitfield Etc, some genuine A graders.

as good as Ryan and Cox have been, needed some other size back there.

Changes:
Blakely - his disposal just kills us.

It’s an absolute clown fiesta up there. Can see it every time they look to attack. No one to go to whatsoever.

I don’t agree. Missing was disappointing. Taking it wasn’t.

we need kids with confidence and flair...

Yes I agree
haven't been totally impressed with Henry's decision making but if we are trying to instill in the team to attack the goals then it's this type of quick instinctive play that should be encouraged.
Leave the set kicks to the guys with cool heads - Tabs , Mundy, Sonny ( past years but it will come back - he's got too much talent) Hogan - (same as above )

all the others " Chaos Ball!!!! ", hard relentless attack either from a win in the midfield or a rebound and run off halfback
Maybe the scores will come from effort rather than skill ?

Found out today who’s AFL level and who’s not. JLo being pushing the memo, one change at a time. Well finally it’s 4 or 5 and towards the future- 2021 and beyond.
Blakely is ordinary. Offers nothing inside and horrible half back for his ball use. He’s in big trouble in AFL if he keeps producing that.

Crowden and Schulz, whilst are great tackling and intent, Aren’t going to push this side long term. We need goals and Lachie goes dry, Crowden is too small to contend. Can’t play them consistently.

Walters have backed his AA year with something negative. Cannot find his mojo. Out of sorts in multiple positions.

Time to bring in the rest of the list and see if they offer anything. Valente and North deserves a chance. Dixon if he’s fit.
Lobb has been awful past month. Now Darcy offers more as a ruck then he does. Perhaps a rest for Rory?

For me, Lobb is set up to go up for a huge contested grab. Tabs is deepest forward one on one. Rory gets in his way, and it ruins the forward line.
Having Hogan would change all this. He’s a lead up forward, not tall enough for the huge leaps like Lobb. Him and Tabs serve the team better tbh.

Fyfe is the problem. He can’t just come in and demand deepest forward. Tabs then gets forced to go up the ground, and limits his danger in front of goals.
Three guys that compete for contested marking all bringing their Opponents to the contest.
If Fyfe plays forward, he needs to play the leading CHF role and Tabs stays deep one on one.

Henry taking the advantage and missing the goal in the last was disappointing to say the least
I don't see that the same way.
Would Eddie Betts have been Eddie Betts if his eyes didn't light up every time he got half a sniff? Would Eddie have been Eddie if he played the "team game" whenever his fingers touched leather?

I'm quite happy with Henry taking half chances, if and when he sees them. With more experience, he'll pass it off as well. Give it time. If we've got a good coach, he'll do his best to make Henry know when to take the shot, and when not to.

Sad to say I saw this coming

Our work rate was way down on previous weeks, we’ve been reading our own press, and we all know what happens to Freo when this happens

Crowden,Blakley not sure how these guys get a game
Hughes and Duman the only reason they do is because of our injuries to our KPD, honest triers, just lack the class

Liam Henry, hey shoot me down for saying it but he looks a little lazy to me and a reader of his own press too maybe if he worked as hard as Andy Bradshaw he’s get some rewards

Son Son and Fyfe looked disinterested to me

Mundy , I love that guy

Anyway onwards and upwards

Well onwards at least
