Review GBU vs Freo

Good - Nope.

Bad - A lot.

Ugly - Extensive. We lost to a Ross Lyon coached side missing Sandilands and Fyfe. We got torn apart by numpties like Brennan Cox and Ed Langdon. Freo's 10 game rookies were close to best on ground. To have a player in our side who has played close to 200 games and is 0% chance of winning a 1 on 1 contest is an indictment. Mackay should never play for the Crows ever again. Pathetic. We also need to stop persisting with Jacobs. Play O'Brien and make Jacobs earn his spot back. He couldn't beat a slow, lumbering second gamer who isn't even Freo's first choice backup ruckman. I could go on.

I also feel truly sorry for Gibbs. The guy is a jet and he came here to get away from the shit he's put up with his whole career. Wanted to play finals and play in a side that was a genuine threat. Nope. Still playing for a side that is miles away from any sort of success.

I have lost it for Jacobs, injury or not. Look at what other ruckman give to their teams and compare it to Jacobs. The leaping type ruckman will almost always come out on top of Jacobs and he gives virtually nothing in field play, forward or defensively. In fact he is a liability when given the ball in field play. Sad.

"LOL", with hindsight. Before the GF, we were favourites to win. After the GF, it was silly.
4 weeks ago, CEY looked the goods.
4 weeks later, I have to agree --- his defensive efforts have been weak, terrible :(. Expects others to chase .
4 weeks ago without hindsight some were saying this. But at least everyone sees it now

And he has zero intensity, stands dumbstuck while the opposition run around him while occasionally throwing out that lame ass arm in an attempt to block basketball style. He is also a horrible ruckman and has little to no idea how to position himself in a contested marking competition - no wonder Eddie has to fly for the mark of the year.

Due to his lack of intensity, poor rucking skills and general laziness he wouldn't have got a game in the great Geelong/Hawthorn teams of the last decade. He has none of the football traits (toughness, aggression, courage, intent, hunger) that are the requirements of a player who will succeed in finals. He should never have been given his current contract given his weaknesses.
Fantastic post....sums the mediocrity of this club up to a tee.
All those who have said we will NEVER win a flag with Mackay and Jenkins in the team ( I have been one) ...and I’d add lettuce leaf Atkins to that list. Those people are....and WILL be right. The others are just your typical rose coloured glasses supporters....sad but true.

sadly true, he used to be quite good in general play, taking marks, even being a link player.

It's evidence that they are capable of finding the money to pay them out, if they want to get rid of them.
We all know why they had to do it last time, there was no choice in the matter. That money is no longer there - you can't just keep doing it, its not a bottomless pit. Not to mention the effect on the soft cap.

Interesting that Michael Walters was actually reported for the head butt to Tom Doedee that followed soon after the gut punch to Jake Kelly. Appears both were looked at by Christian and now Walters has been offered a 1 match ban as a result.

freo pretty much copied the play book Collingwood used to beat you guys, that is to get the ball wide by hand and run from the stoppage rather than kick from the stoppage which took out the defensive structure and allowed a lot of goals to be created
Which is quite easy to do when our midfield are either stationary or very slow moving at best

They haven't even needed to pay them out. They've had their contracts renewed every 2-3 years, for a decade or more. There have been abundant opportunities to get rid of them, at no cost to the club, but they've kept the existing team. Every single time.

Even if that weren't the case, the assistant coaches wouldn't be paid anywhere near as much as the senior coaches.

There is only one possible and logical explanation - the senior coaches (Craig, Sanderson, Walsh, and Pyke) have all been happy with their performance.

I don't claim to know the contract renewal dates of each assistant but the cycle is different to the head coach, Sanderson and Walsh didn't get to finish their terms so I doubt had much say in extending the assistants' tenures, and Pyke inherited most of the current crew. I think management has had more say than any head coach since Craig.
If what you say is true however, it's a bit of an indictment of the senior coaches. Renewal is needed in any organisation particularly when ultimate success has been elusive.

I agree completely. He has been a break even ruckman over the past few years and that is nothing to sneer at. That’s all I want from a ruckman. The elite ones are so hard to get and so to have Sauce breaking even and being a weapon for us using those exact traits you mentioned was one of the main reasons we made it to a GF last year and our relative success over the past few years.

I don’t feel it’s a betrayal to call Sauce cooked. It doesn’t take away from the immense player he has been for us. But just like with thommo, his has run his race now.

It’s time to give ROB a go. At the very least we find out how badly we need a new ruckman and how much we should be willing to pay for a replacement. For example, we might end up giving a 3rd rounder for someone who is only marginally better than ROB. If ROB is decent, we may be ok with this. If ROB is way off, then we may have to use a higher draft pick to replace Sauce adequately. We urgently need to put ROB under the microscope now. We need to know one way or the other what he has got.

Thats how the crows midfield should play instead of just doing hack kicks forward but guess what our mids are not the run and carry types plus they are slow so no matter if they tried that’s not the type of players Greenwood, Yolmen and Crouch are . Footy cClassified showed Yolmens defensive effort against Freo and that was plain embarrassing when the game was on the line . Time to draft some speed. Those 6 picks we could have had over the Tippett Saga are gonna hurt us over the next few years as those players would now be in their prime , thus why this years draft will make or break this club for the next 10 years. I say les get Tankine for Rankine lol Trade Lynch as McGovern and Fogarty will play that role next year . Rory also for a first rounder .

I don’t mind him for depth, the issue is who he can replace is probably limited to guys like Matt Crouch or Greenwood and not powerful runners like Rory Sloane, or guys who are explosive from the contest like Brad Crouch. It’s just unfortunate for us they’re the guys out.
Cey would have value. Gold coast would surely take him as they need mids. Mid to late 2nd rounder

We could end up with the same in reality.
We've already got 3 high picks with potentially another 2 or more coming, probably not worth much trading out a solid bench player when you're bringing in that much youth. Depends on what happens with Sloane and if we bring in any ready made midfield replacements.

It also depends on where we see ourselves. Grab a 3rd rounder if possible and flick it to Essendon for Francis.
