Very frustrating season, but I’ll look at a positive to start: when the game was on the line in the last quarter, Soligo, Schoenberg and Thilthorpe did some things that gave us a chance.

Nicks answered at 3/4 time, what was the difference. “Charlie” he said. That was very obvious early in the 3rd quarter. Yet it wasn’t until in to the 4th quarter that he made a move.

Very disappointing missed shots by Laird. Glad he doesn’t play for the Matildas.
It really annoyed me to hear Nicks give that answer

Yeah sure, Charlie had a purple patch

But losing 11 of the first 12 clearances of the third quarter didn't trouble him? Brisbane going coast to coast unpressured from the kick out to the F50 multiple times in the game didn't trouble him? Us allowing them to isolate CC one out in the F50 so often due to the unfettered speed of ball movement we allowed didn't trouble him?

Those things perhaps had an impact on Charlie vs Max?

Needs to dig a little deeper. What is the root cause? What are the first dominos?

Bris undefeated at home this season.
Guess who has got closest to them?
Collingwood, Melb and Geelong all tried and failed.

We must be back to the least experienced team in the comp again now.

Bigfooty: I'm sick of these honorable losses

What would you prefer, bigger losses, like the top teams, cos that's more honorable?? 🙃

I'm not happy we lost.
Not a one of us should be. "Close" doesn't cut it eg close to win today, close to 15 wins, IF etc ...
I don't care for any of this "honourable loss" BS. We lost because we weren't good enough.
This.
Furthermore, 28 scoring shots to 24 is not an 'honorable' loss. It's a ****en WASTE.
We need to ******* get better
Have Nicks & Co. got the nous, the smarts to turn this mob into a side that takes their chances and win more close games than it loses?
I dunno.
There's no HARD edge to this group. They kick several nice goals through beautiful footy, then switch off as if they're so pleased with their handiwork.
""Up 4 goals to 2 in the first?
Jeez, we're playing well; the rest of the game is just gonna go like this blah blah", bullshit.
I want them to play less like millionaires and more like tradies who just go about their work and get it done. They can enjoy what they've done AFTER they've won it, NOT before.

I want to believe. But players like Laird, Sloane, Obrien, Murphy, Crouch and Smith need to be cleaned out before we go anywhere and our young players take over.
Smith has really lost his pace now. That was his only weapon and it's gone. The end is coming fast.

Agreed totally. However, Nicks is sensible enough to give the easy throwaway answer and not throw half of his side under the bus in the interview.

Smashed at the back of stoppages

Some good things today:
  • Liked the forward line a lot. McAdam, Walker, Pedlar and Keays all had good games. Pedlar looked better for the rest. His best game in a while.
  • Won the midfield battle for the most part.
  • Rachele good as the sub. Nice finish for his goal and six tackles was impressive - suspect that was something he would have been asked to work on.
  • Defence got exposed a few times but given how ridiculously inexperienced the group is and the quality of the opposition, it wasn't too bad. I think Keane was great aside from one shocking kick, would go close to holding his spot at this stage even if everyone was fit.
  • Soligo's game wasn't very good but he did well to fight it out and contribute well in the last quarter. Would have been easy to fade out of the contest.
  • Loved Schoenberg's game.

Bad stuff:
  • Laird should have nailed those two chances in the last quarter. Always been a weakness in his game, and you'd expect an experienced mid floating forward to kick those.
  • Sloane was poor. Might be his worst game for the year actually. Will be interesting to see what they do with him next week as it's the last home game for the year, and Crouch's return has made it a fair bit less likely that he gets re-signed I think. Would be happy for him to announce his retirement during the week, timed for the end of the season. Don't think it'll happen that way though.

Performed well overall and should have won, with Brisbane's mature class getting it done when they had momentum. Rankine would've been handy.

Key players couldn't kick clutch goals - again. Laird arguably cost us the match.

Midfield setups and execution were rank at times but hey, that's what we selected.

Probably relying too much on favourable results now to snag 8th. A season of "what could've been" but we're not ready yet. Finals should definitely be played next year, and if we actually address our midfield issues we could build beyond that.

It feels utterly gross that teams like St Kilda and Essendon are above us with two to go, but here we are.

If Lairds cost us the match, so did Pedlar and Walker. All 3 missed p*ss easy shots.

Keays missed one that AFL players should kick 95 out of 100 times.

(he was otherwise good)

Good:
Keane, Worrell, Milera, Crouch, Schoey, Dawson, Pedlar, McAdam

Bad:
Sloane, Murphy, Thilthorpe, Laird

Ugly:
Goalkicking
Umpiring
Laird's loopy handballs, rainmaking kicks and abysmal goal kicking.

Next week:

IN:
Rachele, Cook, McHenry/Dowling (SUB)

OUT:
Sloane, Murphy

No farewell game for Sloane. Ruthless, I like it.

I guess we'll see his real thoughts in selection then?

Good = Sogs 11 D in the last
Better = Lairds 21 D last half
Best = Crouch’s game

Great signs for season ‘24, frustrating season as a supporter, but maybe this builds some resilience for this young playing group. Close results go our way this season we’re top 4, future is bright!

That's Sloane coming off 2 weeks on a decreased workload as sub too...
Last 6 weeks:

Rnd 17 Full game: Loss
Rnd 18 Full game: Loss
Rnd 19 Full game: Loss
Rnd 20 Sub: Win
Rnd 21 Sub: Win
Rnd 22 Full game: Loss

Borlase off Rachele on was brilliant and made a difference. We covered their forwards well after he went off, and he had made a couple of blues when he was on

No drama putting Rachelle on - he should have been in the starting 22 - my observation was Sloane off Rachelle on with Borlase on their talls

We had so many chances in that first qtr to 6 goals up but fumbled, missed marks, missed handballs or bad kicking really hurt us. Need a massive pre season on skills and 1 touch pick up. The lions defence held up well by out marking our forwards. Really need Fog and Tilly to bring the ball to ground so our smalls have a chance
We have done this a lot and then end up losing. It’s time for Sloane to go as he cost us about 5 goals tonight.

Them we get to the umpiring which again was so poor and almost bias. I counted about 10 times in the first half when the lions dropped the ball and not one HTB?? Defender walks across line without any pressure.

I would love the AFL to explain to the AFL world WTF holding the ball is because it changes game by game. No other sport in the world accepts that shit but we have to endure this every week
