Happy with this, but what's the story with the 3 year contract? Earlier reporting seemed to suggest our offer was a 5 year contract... was that all just media nonsense or did something change along the way?
I'm guessing it's a 3 year guaranteed with 2 optional based on triggers?

Rankine was the one I really wanted from the 2018 crop. Great to finally snag him.

At the time thought he had a bit of young McLeod about him.

Its why I started the thread in the first place.:thumbsu:

To think Port played a hand in getting him here as well, delicious!

Not sure how to feel about giving up pick 5 for a player we only have on a 3 year deal
Length of the deal only matters if he leaves after it. You could argue he could do that with or without a contract.
If he doesn't perform as expected, using the Suns method, we'd be asking for at worst pick 7?

Guarantees they won’t allow the JHF deal to go through until the last hour of Trade Week.
Isn't there an actual trade embargo for Wednesday morning? Like an actual mandated AFL thing where even if they're lodged in the morning they have to wait until prime time to announce it?

I suspect the earlier reporting was just based on the idea that a club trading pick 5 for a player would surely be offering a 5 year contract - and that seems a reasonable assumption. Except that we weren't having to work too hard on attracting him, and perhaps as others have suggested, the contract term was his idea - that is, we might have offered 5 years at $X (average) and he said nah, I'll take 3 years at $X and then, with TPP increases and hopefully performance, I'll negotiate for bigger $ then. Which is assuming a bit of risk for him, I guess, but it's not totally out of order.

So instead of JHF last year we have Josh Rachele, Jordan Dawson and Izak Rankine....nice!

the GC v PA game at Adelaide Oval this year, he enjoyed it playing at Adelaide Oval so much, apparently he made his mind up after that.

The crowd, the atmosphere, his family in the rooms after the game.

Tenuous link I know, but hey lets claim it
No sure if you heard it somewhere, but Justin Reid just basically confirming the above.

Sigh. Pick 5 gone.

Assuming we finally draft an elite calibre midfielder next year, it will be until 2026 before they can get to 50 games, likely later knowing our selection policies.

The never ending rebuild.

It would have been stupidly foolish if we did that trade... red flags everywhere but still... in a better environment I think jhf will easily be much better than at North. Will be interesting to look back in 10 years time.
