List clean out is urgently needed

At training is in the fwd group so that's where he seems to be pigeonholed. Would be great to see him chucked in the middle or off half back at stages. Reasistically will only ever get something like 10 disposals a game wherever he is moved but if it allows him to burst away then that's great in my eyes.

We know he's only a fringe guy because he is playing WAFL when our senior team is garbage and there should be plenty of spots to grab.
You probably used the word that best describes a lot of the problems with this club selection, “pigeon holed”. Petrocelli was a winger when recruited but seems to now be only a forward. Previously a poster compared him to LeCras who was a pure footballer who read the play better than most. Just a wrong comparison. Many of our players like Cole, Duggan, Nelson, Foley etc. we’re recruited as midfielder/defenders but they’ve been slotted as defenders despite shortcomings in Players playing mid. The biggest problem with the team in my opinion is the lack of run and attack from defence. The bloody ball spends enough time there so that’s where we should be attacking from. At the moment, Barass and McGovern are good key position players with Barass acting as a back up for kicks trying to switch easing pressure. Witherden and McGovern try and pick out a man downfield and Duggan does the same. Hurn, Rotham and Foley just chip the ball around until they are forced to kick to a contest. Nobody in the back line attacks! I’ve made the point previously that Shuey should go to half back to run and use his kicking skills to initiate attacks. Brisbane have now done it with Zorko and it’s made a huge difference to them. It will also free up opportunities for younger players to take on midfield roles. Just try something new and start developing players while doing it

Id like to see the same thing. Hurn was recruited as a midfielder and then because of a strong midfield in 2006 he got games as a defender. Then did well and never really explored moving any further upfield. Shuey & Petch off half back would be something dynamic at the expense of our defensive marking prowess as we would be more forced to have others manned up.

I know it's the whole point of an internet forum to speculate on talk about things we know nothing about. But people are ragging on players without knowing all the details.

For example...

IMHO, with the attributes he has, Jack Petruccelle should be pushing for a midfield slot. He has blistering pace and he has a good size. And he's coming up to 50 games, which is around the time that mid-sized players should be establishing themselves. Personally, I always saw his time in the forward line as about development. He just doesn't have the skills or goal sense of the likes of Rioli, Ryan or Cripps to be a permenant forward. So I figured he gets played as a forward as he develops his tank to spend more time on-ball.

And NOW is the time he should be doing that. Because he's reportedly had a cracking pre-season, after recovering from injuries.

But we have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. Perhaps the club reports of his good pre-season were overstated and he doesn't have the tank. Maybe he's not working hard enough. The club will KNOW the things, because of the metrics they maintain. Alternatively, they may continue to see him as a forward and have set him targets to kick more goals.

It's difficult to look at a player's output on the field, and know whether they are performing or not performing... because we don't know whether they are actually hitting their KPIs. Even a full-forward, whose sole purpose is to kick goals... might look like a complete bust because the midfield is giving them crappy delivery.

This is a long, round-a-bout way of saying... are some of the whipping boys in this thread really duds? Or is it the coaches and development staff?
Petche's last game before covid he played the last quarter in the midfield and looked better playing there from memory? Has definitely got all the tools to be a great player, just needs to put it all together. Definitely not delist material. He will come good.

Isnt the first player we will hold onto and hold onto because he did something great once in a game..
puts him ahead of mcinnes and nelson who have had honorary list spots.

Petch always has a great preseason and kicks 5 in the scratchies.....

Because nobody can be bothered chasing him
Petch has done ok for a mid ranged pick, but i dont think hes going to make it.

Hes in his 4th or 5th year and still only getting high teen posessions in the WAFL.

Meanwhile erasmus has 30+ before getting KO'd

Come end of season we need to clean out half our list.
Some big calls needed

Shuey needs tap on the shoulder to retire
Kennedy Hurn Reddon obvious Retire aswell. Trade Yeo Gaff Sheed Darling all on the table.

Delist Cripps Nelson Cole and any other player not in our future plans.

Sack Simmo for a fresh new coach.
Full rebuild mode in 2023 with new coach and a complete list turn around.

Yeah we will be crap for a few years but it's what's needed now then hoping these old farts turn it around. We are past our prime and last night shown a light on where we are at.

I'd rather what youth then the pathetic old team we have now.

So we cut 20 players do we?

Didn't know the draft went to round 20. I'm sure there is some real quality sitting there at pick 100..

Lol.

I'd keep Cripps, Kennedy and Shuey, and probs Simmo depending on how this season goes. I just got my sister a Cripps guernsey I really hope he gets his form back

But the main issue is strength and conditioning, our players get so tired in games and seem unfit half the time, and we're getting slammed by injuries, it can't be a coincidence. We have a brand new training facility and fancy changerooms but players are getting soft tissue damage like it's the 80s

A nice new hard training ground on top of a nice new hard Optus playing surface.

Above average soft tissue and ankle injuries for both Freo and Eagles ever since.

Coincidence?

I'm undecided on the coach, but I would like to see a decent clean out of the once great players we had.
Retire: Redden, Shuey, Cripps, Kennedy, Hurn.
trade: Gaff, Sheed, NicNait & Darling. Or delist/retire.
delist: O'neill & Dixon.

It still leaves us some veterans in McGov, Duggan, Kelly, Rioli, Barrass and Yeo.
If we bundled Gaff, Sheed, NicNait & Darling to Geelong or Goldcoast/ who ever, we could end up with a 3rd round pick if lucky.
Draft some talented mids, key forwards, rucks and some more left footers.
Then buy up some talented 20-22 year olds, albeit cheaply.
Its sounds terrible I know, but we need to do what Freo have done.

The draft goes for as long as people want to pick guys and have list spots…

Florenca added to our list last night. He likely would have been there at that pick….

Nkt as crazy as it sounds. Thats still 15 odd players to look at. All you need is 1 -2 rookie picks a year to come good ( on top of 3ND) and you're well ahead of the curve.

Bundle up Gaff, Sheed, Darling and Nic landing us a 3rd rounder? If lucky?

That doesnt sound terrible it sounds bat sh!t crazy and so far off the mark it isnt funny.

All those players would land a mid to late 2nd rounders each to the right club. Or a swap for a young fringe player.

Lions were trading out players of that ilk for late 1st rounders in their rebuild.

When was the last time a club took 4 players in one trade from another club?

Plenty of creative trading options being posted. All include players that can actually contribute at the AFL level. We must retire a couple as age does weary them. A tricky one is Hurn who is still our second best defender but in the name of rebuilding he probably goes.

Our real problem us that we have players who are marginally above WAFL level but hopelessly outclassed against reasonable AFL teams. This is due to ability of which pace is an element. They include proven duds like Waterman, West - he has grunt many lack but cannot kick-perhaps give him time, Petro, Cripps is fading fast, Nelson, Duggan, HEdwards, XON, and then we get into the newbies some who deserve a little time. Our two WAFL mids have shown up the gap in awareness and skill so keep them somehow.

These must be moved on - there is no trade value in reality but see what we get. Losing Brander was a bonus spot opening. Perhaps the others can join him in the GWS reserves.

Your retire list is good and we have to release some of these club legends and accept our fate while we build for the future ..

If you guys think Darling is struggling now, wait until Kennedy retires. I've said this for years, Darling benefits the most playing with JK.

Darling is undersized playing as a key position forward. He's the same height as Yeo. Key backs are all 195+ now, most near 200cm. He's not going to out mark anyone in a run and jump situation.

This has always been a weakness. He should play third tall. Allen and one other??
