Time for a re-think where he was told to change how he attacked the ball to protect himself better (after his two concussions, earlier this year).
It is very rare when a young ruckmen is taken early in the draft; albeit Grundy was around Pick twenty.Jonas
Clurey
Howard
McKenzie (not young but came to us as a HFB and has become a key back)
Alir became an AA at our club, no doubt he improved at Port
Austin got a game or two and then traded for his draft value.
Strong view that we don’t develop key players.
Reality is you need 2-3 key backs, 1-2 rucks, 2-3 key forwards. Jonas and Clurey have been two of those for the past decade. Few teams or coaches would drop an experienced and senior player for a developing one. Usually retirements, suspensions and injuries are needed. Look at the vaunted Richmond defence - gone from experienced key backs to developing inexperienced backs. Reckon Richmond would trade those flags for a few extra games for the likes of Ben Miller?
We could give lots of games to young talls and we would be murdered. People talk about how Brisbane gave games to Hipwood, Carlton backed in Weitering, etc but those teams were on the bottom and had no choice. Hell Carlton still held Curnow and McKay back and now they are doing well. So there clearly isn’t an exact science to this.
You can criticise Port for not developing a ruck or key back. Maybe we could have got an extra ten games in Hayes or Pasini, etc. not sure it would have made a difference but I would suggest we’ve done as well as most teams during the same period.
As to the criticism of the list structure (not yours Philthy, other posters), we entered this year with a 4 rucks (another 2 part time), 6 key forwards (4 ready to go), 6 key backs (another 2 who can play tall).
Lycett was banged up, Hayes overlooked and Danté not ready. Still reasonable to think that we would be able to cover ruck duties with what we have on the list.
Key defenders wise we had Alir, Jonas, Clurey, McKenzie all ready to go with Pasini probably getting to the age of being ready if he is good enough. That’s a solid group. Not sure a VFL key back would have added much over Narkle.
Key forwards, well we already struggled to fit Mitch in. Ollie has come on which is a surprise.
As to Ollie and Boak, both are battered right now. Give them a preseason and they’ll still be contributing plenty. Besides both have had solid games and made valuable contributions. No need to panic or boot them.
We are in a hole at the moment. We have issues with how we are playing and our work rate. We have a massive hole in our small forward stocks. We need a ruck - Grundy all the way, pay the man! Another key back would help. But almost every side is in a similar position. Port is just able to potentially correct this with two great players.
Douglas Howard rumoured to be leaving St Kilda
The recruiters are aware of our needs what we need and enquired and tried to get Grundy & Ratagolea last year.We need a 6 foot 6 Hit you in the back of the head type defender. Not sure Ratagolea is that. We should be targeting somebody else. Not easy I know.
Never been a huge fan of Grundy's and he's such a Malbun doofus Hipster these days I doubt he will come here but he would fill a genuine need.
Fire Dixon, Boak and TJ into the sun.
Put a lot of work into Ollie Lord.
Get a good return for Georgiadis.
Best we can hope for.
Georgiadis is going to West Coast. No where else. The recruiters are aware of our needs what we need and enquired and tried to get Grundy & Ratagolea last year.
Albeit, in my opinion it is very hard to be critical of our recruitment team's recent record where they have exceeded all expectations.
Reading the tea leaves, we will try again for Grundy & Sav; where if you want something good, you need to give up something good.
If if, if Grundy agreed to return home I'm happy to trade Georgiadis for Grundy + their Pick 34 or maybe the plus is, swap their Pick 23 for and our 37 etc.
Either way, we could flip Georgiadis for Grundy and a plus, where the Plus is an improvement on our Pick 37/42.
Mathew Flynn is likely to be very available for free from gws. Himmelberg would have taken up alot of celery. There wouldn't be many teams where Flynn would be a walk up first ruck.
reads promising: other brothers westhoff lads 2 country victorian lads? others?
Vigo Visentini
Ruck
203cm, 97kg
Visentini is a great example of the modern-day ruckman that has flexibility in movement across the ground and the ruck with his athletic capabilities. The ex-volleyballer has great tap craft and places his midfield in great stead across the stoppages.
Visentini’s versatility lies in his ability to run across the ground and become a focal point in transition. With a fine-tuned kicking style, he’s able to hit field kicks and spread the play and his work rate enables him to provide a target inside 50.

Georgiades is a must keep with all the uncertainty still surrounding our forward half. I think the focus should be solely directed at securing Rat, Grundy & BZT, an area which has been our Achilles heel for years.
Not sure about that ... Preuss will be going free to a good home, but Flynny is a local boy and will likely stay as back-up to BriggsMathew Flynn is likely to be very available for free from gws. We a have a recent trend of trading back into the draft.Georgiades is a must keep with all the uncertainty still surrounding our forward half. I think the focus should be solely directed at securing Rat, Grundy & BZT, an area which has been our Achilles heel for years.
Agree, but with no first round pick for improvement we need trade currency, ideally from players who wish to leave. You have to keep reminding yourself Mitch is still only 21. There's not a trade we do that we don't lose on if it involves Mitch.

It 100% did. Marshall even spoke about it I think.I strongly doubt this conversation ever happened
If we grabbed a ruckman in the next draft he would not be ready to play seniors next year.Out - Scott Lycett (The Haven Retirement Village), Sam Hayes (Winny Blues or Escort House), Brynn Teakle (ALFW)
In - A readymade ruck like Jordon Sweet or Hipster Doofus Brodie Grundy, Taylor Goad, Vigo Visentini.
There are 4 highly touted rucks in the Top 20, if one of those falls to our first pick, we have to seriously look at them.
I don't think there is huge needs for rucks around the league at the moment.
Goad might keep climbing and climbing.
I don't want Grundy but he doesn't seem that bad of a bloke.
Possible Rucks 2024 - Sweet, Dante, Goad, Vigo.
Matthew Lobbe can head back to Kingston.
Nothing wrong but he has not been the same player since; hence, maybe he need another model. What's wrong with Marshall being taught to better protect himself? It doesn't mean he can't go in hard for the ball, just that he needs to be smarter about it. He was running into contests with little regard for where his head was placed.
Yeah, especially when he gets around Melbourne in a little Vespa type Scooter dragging his long shanks while wearing throngs (on his feet).I would have thought Flynn would want to go somewhere he is likely to be first ruck and probably get the best contract. Dont know. Port really needs a competent ruck for the next few years. Its really hard to know what is going in Grundy's head!
It is very rare when a young ruckmen is taken early in the draft; albeit Grundy was around Pick twenty.
Most Coaches do not rate ruckmen, they do not have the luxury of time waiting potential years to develop the player instead, preferring to trade one in.
For example, look at Geelong where it seems every year they trade in & out their ruckmen.
Yeah, we definitely need a Number 1 Ruckmen to be traded in for.If we grabbed a ruckman in the next draft he would not be ready to play seniors next year.
Therefore we need to trade one in who can play immediately, it would be prudent to keep Lycett as backup (I believe we have offered him a one year deal).
The Pies and others will be looking at him as a cheap pick up via free agency for a second or backup ruck.
