The Touhy trade is only good if we make top 6 and Carlton finish bottom 4, them keeping Gibbs and our horror trade period makes this trade a lot more of a gamble. a few injuries and this could be a disaster.

....or he becomes a intregal part of the team, like Henderson has. Then I couldn't give a stuff about the picks.

How deep is a deep draft? We are proper stacked up for picks between 60-90. We chose an unusual way to trade into the draft to say the least. There is <1% chance a guy taking after 60 will become a decent player.
Rookies are all the equivalent of picks after 60. I don't know what your criteria for a "decent player" is, but I'm skeptical that the hit rate would be anywhere close to as bad as 1/100, let alone worse. Would guess around 5-10%, if by "decent player" you mean something like "manages to hit 50 games".

For all those claiming Geelong had to do all this to ease salary cap issues, explain to me why/how Caddy, Smedts, Bartel were contracted for 2017, and we put offers to Kersten and Vardy? (Not to mention wanting Enright to play on).
If everyone contracted had have insisted they wanted to stay and Kersten and Vardy had accepted our offers, how could we possibly be under the cap next year (considering the claim that we had to offload Caddy)? And don't say we expected to offload Motlop because he has a contract also.

So explain why we simply had to do this? Did we accidentally give everyone a contract, or offer a contract, and in the last two days say "oopsie, we made a mistake, we can't possibly fit you all in".

I understand wanting to justify the boneheadedness that was this trade period but this excuse needs further explanation.

They're both a long, long way from being proven performers just yet.
A long way from being established best 22. Not sure how, after both putting in good performances against decent opposition this year, they aren't "proven performers", whatever that means. I'm not claiming they're in Dangerfield's league.

Pretty substantial list turnover this off-season. How many players is that now? Bartel, Enright, Kersten, Caddy, Vardy, Smedts, Lucey, Cornell, Bates, Read, Delaney.

11 players gone.

Who said we won't be drafting! We need a lot of youth coming through to replace that, will free up the salary space for sure.

And we were playing 2 short on the primary list this year, so possibly 13 new faces

Does that mean we can take "rookies" in the national draft? Can we use these late picks on VFL guys for instance.

Both showed promise for sure. At the same time, Ruggles was out of his depth and terrible against Hawthorn in the Qualifying Final and dropped, and in the Prelim Menegola was much worse. So there's scope for improvement.

One would hope that there's scope for improvement for the whole team based on the prelim! Hardly a fair measure of Menegola's contributions since coming in.

That depends on your perspective.

It's possible to look at the home and away season, and see only the best performances against poor opposition. Or, you can be a lot more skeptical (and cynical), and ask, how good are these guys really? How were they when the pressure was really on? I'd say very, very few players had their reputations enhanced by the finals series, and I'd say a few were exposed. The question is will the club seriously evaluate every player's performance, or will they treat it as anomaly and arrogantly assume every player is wonderful (my guess is the latter).

She also got Menzel spot on and said if Guthrie was available we'd take him.

She is very knowledgeable. Her book on the draft is a ripper.

But she is a woman Kris!
And you and I both know that they cannot possibly know anything about football.

I would have used <Sacastica> type face but it is not available on Bigfooty.

No need to clarify that you have no interest in staying classy. That's always been abundantly clear.

Cats were classy and victorious in '07, '09 and '11. I remain hopeful that we'll see more of the same in times to come.

You too are classy GYC,
ignore the troll. Just look at the number of posts he makes, there's the clue.
Mr. Right, never wrong.

I agree with your earlier post, whilst not an ideal trade period, I do think "How you treat players" is important.
Why do so many seek trades to us and teams like Hawthorn. What happens when we really need player X?
Its not about being classy its about being transparent and while that clearly irks many players now hold the upper hand in many cases and we need to deal with that
If Caddy is lured away by more money good on him. We stifle that and do we end up with a disgruntled player.
Sure some think we somehow put the thought in his mind, but he can say that as it takes the responsibility of his shoulders.
If we go all hard arse I think that could well come back to bite us.
But let the bleating continue, based largely on hidden and not so hidden agendas. I choose to get over it and look forward to what happens next. Unlike some who keep assuring us they know what is going to happen. Where were they at the end of 2006?

We didn't want to do a straight swap with Richmond of Caddy for Deledio.
Fans didn't want to do a straight swap with Richmond of Caddy for Deledio.

End of trade period Richmond ended up getting more for Deledio than we got for Caddy?
We couldn't afford his contract..once motlop was of the trade table so was Deledio

Wells talking to K-Rock:

Geelong says it was “reluctant” to let go of hard-nosed midfielder Josh Caddy.

The 24-year-old, who played 71 games at the Cats after arriving from Gold Coast in 2013, today joined Richmond for pick No.24 and an exchange of later round trades.

“We were reluctant to do the deal,” Geelong list manager Stephen Wells told K rock Football.com.au.

“Josh, through his manager, made the request, and, in the end, Richmond Football Club came back with a reasonable deal that improved our position in the draft and, consequently, Josh will be playing at Richmond.

“We’re sad to see him go and wish him all the best.”

Yes. And I think it's fairly common for players to struggle in their first final or two. Some of course can take quite a bit longer than that. :D

Cocky, Lang and Gregson really need to step up next year.

Gregson was pretty good in his first season.
Not as bright this year and he had his season cut short by a Navicular stress fracture.
Cocky also had his season interrupted by injury, but he will be a good player.
Lang will be OK. They are young players and a little patience would not go astray.
