Sounds to me we'll only trade Motlop if a deal to good to refuse comes along which is unlikely.
That is my feeling as well, he most likely stays but aren't against moving him on if the return is worth it.

Wells interview:
  • "Possible" we'll trade up to get back into the first round - Awesome.
  • Expects Motlop will play at Geelong in 2017 - Hope this is the case.
  • Hoping to use plenty of picks in the draft - Again, Awesome.
  • Would like to help the backline, find more run - PRIORITY!
  • We have an interest in Deledio - meh
  • Daniel Wells will not be playing at Geelong - Praise the lord.
  • Plan is for Lonergan to play on next year - Good news
  • Menzel contract to be announced soon - Good news
  • Expecting to hear from Kersten & Freo soon (sounds gone IMO) - Hope he stays.
  • Vardy is welcome to stay at Geelong but is exploring his option - 50/50 IF he can get his body and mind right he could be handy at CHF
  • Would you trade Motlop? "Depends on the trade offer" "Not many players on any list you wouldn't trade" - Please don't.
  • No comment on Bartel - Go around again Jimmy!!!!
My 2 cents.
Is it just me or did Wellsy give them a bit more than usual?

But the question is if he stays does he get a rocket and told to lift his game or do we put up with another subpar season next year? Would also like to know the status of Mitch Clark, seems to have dropped off the face of the planet, is he even a GFC player anymore.

Looks like another year of "too tall backline" whinges with Lonergan playing on. Really strange move.
If you separate the to tall issue which isn't Toms fault (that's a selection issue) from Tom going on it doesn't look so bad he hasn't dropped off significantly and still plays huge game time.If we use him wisely he can be contribute in 2017, a dozen cherry picked games if form is good would be ideal.

I wonder if Kerstos decision will be impacted by Hamling... if his best mate goes back home to WA that may change his thinking?
Was confident kersto would stay right up until I heard Hammer was ooc as well and liking at going home.

They are all over each others social media and are good mates. I'd say it's a done deal sadly

With Clark, Vardy, Menzel, McCarthy, Gregson, Bartel all question marks in one way or another, him leaving does not make our f50 better one bit IMO.

But... transitioned in will be Gardner..another tall .. Which to me is fine.
Mackie at his height and speed is what needs to be looked at.
I would also very much like to see Mackie play plenty of VFL next season... and Bews/Ruggles play most games... and a Cunico start to press his case as well

I'm more than happy to retain Motlop (in fact I'll be really disappointed if we don't), and our only movement to be trading fringe players like Kersten and Vardy and potentially bundling up two picks in the 30s for something in the 20s to a club that needs points for academy picks.

I'm not sure what the obsession with the first round is. If our first pick ends up between 25-40 we should still expect to land a good player. In the last three years alone players taken in this region include Josh Dunkley, Jack Steele, Touk Miller, Zach Merrett, Rory Lobb and Lewis Taylor.

I agree with you a bit..there will be good players in the 20-40 range this year... but for several reasons..if we could get back into the first round , it loosens our targets for next year.

The thing is with Kersto is that him leaving doesn't overly make our forward line worse either... as he has never consistently performed at a high level.. and he has been given plenty of chances.

He is that line ball player that could turn into a really good player or who could fade away to a never was..

Yeah, I get that. It's whether they can separate them that's my doubt.

I will take no joy of seeing him play that lead up forward role at Freo with fast ball movement and good delivery kicking 45 a year.

No joy at all. Meanwhile, Hawkins is still double teamed with the pill landing on his head.

Yes Willo..yes

This comment about speed in the backline is very interesting. If thats the case Bews must be a lock. Cunico presents as an option but we have to find another ... we really don't want to rely on another fragile talent. Smedts has speed and is another fragile body.
My guess how ever when they say speed..they want speed matched with foot disposal closer to a Thurlow type than a Bews

If we get the right kid at the draft , I don't exclude someone being able to help out.. Allison would be great but Brisbane acad. We do like agility in the combine results... so my guess Tom Williamson would have turned our head a bit.. 188 and plenty of run.... here is what Knightmare said about him 3weeks ago...
Williamson has received a national combine invite and is seen as being in the mix. Good height and can provide some drive out of the back half with his run and kicking. Probably a bit too outside for my liking, but if you draft him it's because he is young and has scope to develop.

add Cunico/Smedts... and we dont need to sell the farm to get youth and speed into our side.

Well if he goes to Freo and under Ross Lyon you won't have to worry about seeing it matey.

Kane Cornes with some sense, he would not do Motlop for Deledio because it is not in Geelongs best interest given age and talent etc.
I have found Kane Cornes to be a breath of fresh air media wise the 2nd half of this year... really impressive so far

My reading between the lines of Wells interview was that Motlop is in trouble.

He offered some weasel words when asked directly about Motlop but the fact he also mentioned getting a first round pick earlier in the interview tells me they are looking to move him on.

I think we will get a pick between 15-20 for Motlop.

And a pick in the 30/40s for both Vardy and Kersten.

It will give us a fairly strong hand at the draft, with 4 picks in the 'Wells zone' of 30-40, plus a first round draft pick for Moltop.

I am not happy about losing Motlop, but I think the writing is on the wall.

Good work everyone. I'm liking the sounds of all of that.

Sounds like kersten and vardy traded out motlop stays and either deledio or tuohy in if we can get it done. Please trade in a kpf too.

Still doesn't help our main issue; slow ball movement out of defence. Mackie, Lonners.... One of those two needs to move on I'd think.

Simples. Either don't give Lonergan another year or Mackie spends time in the VFL.

In my opinion Ruggles, Bews and Thurlow need to be regular players from nxt season down back. I would also love to have Guthrie back there.
With Henderson and Taylor as the key defenders. I think 1 of Kolo, Lonergan or Mackie could also be included in the team.
Yes there are other issues but getting the run and cohesion down back will set up the rest of the ground. Thurlow will help a lot but may take time to get form back after a year out.

A running defender(s) are very much needed Bews, Guthrie and Thurlow are all capable of playing that role. But adding another quality player there can only help. My concern is like others with having too many tall and/or slow players both by foot and movement down there. Mackie is the biggest worry as its not just his position but the game seems to have gone well past him. Kolo is young and will improve needs to work on decisions and disposal. Lonergan was good but only a structural issue.

With drafting little difference between 15 and 25.
The issue is trading-if we are going to trade in a top end kpf (which we need) or KK when next out of contract we need the capacity to trade a first rounder which the rules dont allow unless we trade an extra 1st rnd in.
