Going after 2E and Lids was always going to be a huge ask.
Say we got lids .......some people would be thinking the club shafted jimmy to get lids.
Seriously, got to love Jimmy, but we aren't a charity and we don't owe anyone indefinite years on the list. If he can't or doesn't want to see that his contribution next year would be limited then then that is his problem, not the GFC.

The one thing that noone can answer is what was the plan prior to trade period.

Perhaps we HAD to remove a contracted player and the Mots thing totally derailed them forcing their hand into having to move Caddy.

Now, I have no info as to this. I am stiff miffed at the Caddy value involved.

But generally, the club has not made consistently poor list management decisions.

This IMO is one - there has to be a reason for it other than the shits and grins of it.... perhaps this is one.

GO Catters
It sounded like we went in with the idea that we'd offload Motlop, netting us a large amount of salary cap relief and a nice 1st round pick, yet when there were no takers we were on the backfoot and kind of shat the bed. If there is one positive, I'd much rather keep Motlop than Caddy, granted he can get back to his best.

Just like the coach.....no plan B!!!!

Don't stress guys, Wellsy knows what to do with those 3 picks in the 20s-40s... He tends to go best available rather than reach on picks in that range. I back him to deliver there. I suspect he will go a KPF, KPD, and a midfielder.

ps. I'm very glad we didnt go for Lids. Tuohy will be just what we needed, pace and elite kicking from the back half. We should get terrific overlapping run with Tuohy, Thurlow and Guthrie from defence.

I suspect that could be a big part of the frustration. They seem to have been genuinely shocked that no one would be interested. That's worrying.

You would have hoped that most of the prep work would have been done prior to trade week being commenced. That's what we are told in any case. And even if it was a unexpected that Motlop didn't carry any interest then you'd hope they had a plan B or a plan C or a plan D. Sounds like, similar to Scott's coaching, we only had that plan A.

And Plan A wasn't a very good one.

Well done Catriot. Very true. All this attack on wells is ridiculous. Can anyone point to a game where Caddy changed a game? Made a difference sure but broke a game open? Last year he was not good.

There are two scenarios I can see that wells may have had the logic of this is a win situation for Geelong.

1- he and the club have their eyes on a big recruit next year such as a fye or another name which we will have to wait and see on.

2- he is our draft master; with picks 24 and the two second rounders next year, he believes that he can get very good players of around the same quality while adding tuoey as well.

A lot of this is dependant on his draft knowledge and what he believes he will snatch up.

I agree on face value it looks like a turd sandwich, you won't have any arguments with me on this. What I am saying is from his point of view he probably sees and thinks a lot of upside from it in terms of his drafting craft. Also potentially a big name player free agent???

Time will tell, but until then I'm sure I will feel a bit disgruntled like everyone else about it, but am still trying to hold an open opinion as to what his move is or the benefit he believes is laying ahead from it.

Time will 100% decide if failure or not

Edit: would actually love for a statement from him explaining his point of view on these moves. May give a new perspective

Good post.
Id only add that ..

3 .. the club was in dire trouble with the cap and it just didn't want to pay any of the players they let go that were contracted. And if that was the case the club has been derelict in looking at other players , they should have just traded out and gone to the draft for cheap kids.

Overall I'm a bit over the Wells "Kiwi" type of approach ... the I can come from last to win physiology we seem to have in trade. Im a bit over trading our R1 picks and mortgaging our future. Its feels like we are always in catch up. Im a bit over brining in ordinary players just cause they are ready to play..... but as you say time will tell.

And shocked that Caddy would/wanted to go. They were blind sided.

Nah they weren't. They discussed it with him when no one wanted Motlop.
Also they must have known he met with Richmond before he went on holidays. The media did.

"Geelong led by 33 points early in the final quarter, but Hawthorn kicked five straight goals to close to within three points.
But young Geelong on-baller Josh Caddy kicked a goal from near the boundary to give the Cats breathing space, and they held on for the win."

I certainly don't think he was a superstar, and he was still inconsistent. But it's equally incorrect to start inferring he never played good footy for us. Because he did.

You mean after Richmond showed interest in him after Geelong entered negotiations for Deledio?

Second phase. I think they were gobsmacked in him requesting trade when they had told him they wanted him to stay. Having said that they released him when he told them he wanted to go.

I wasn't a huge fan of Caddy but we still should of got more for him. Was contracted, 24 years of age, former 1st round pick.
I also like Tuoey but I think we paid to much for him. He was uncontracted.
We gave up a contracted player, swapped picks and I also heard we gave them them our Kersten pick too.
Not just Wells fault though. Football dept as a whole, and those looking after the cap.

According to Wells they knocked back the Deludio deal 11 days ago. All I am saying is that they didn't expect him to choose to go. Wells has been pretty open. But i thought he was a chance when Wells finished the second last interview with its up to Josh. Regardless if Deludio Richmond were after him.

He played several good game but not as many as I hoped he would.

Although Im not rapt in him being let go .. I'm a bit miffed probably that we have hand on a contract player and we get unders... yet Id have been happy enough if we had got an R1 back for him.I think the club looked at Menegola , his running ability , his goal kicking and said we can cover him. This year 24 is a reasonable player but the R1 rule impedes us and will continue to. And we now will have a gap at CHF and no real way to trade in one next year. I'm confident we will get a good kid at 24 , as I have said a few times there are good kids thru to 40 this year.

Asked him how he'd feel about leaving, when couldn't get Lids thought we'd keep him as we thought he'd be happy to stay.
Richmond then 100% convinced him to join them.
Not a lot we could after that. Not much chance of getting better than 24.

And did he not kick the goal that put us in front in our last finals win as well?

Though he by no means played well in that game, but he could kick a big goal when required.
