Lots of hand wringing over Caddy going without us getting 15......Someone pointed out that Tom Mitchell went for 14.....is that right?

If so...would you put Mitchell and Caddy in the same hemisphere? Not pygmalion likely. 24 was ok for Caddy IMO though there are plenty that won't agree...

In a good draft we should get a good player at 24. Bloody well hope so anyway.

So only have one chf that is really a third fwd in premiership hunt. No way. Only let him go to look after twins. Not the way gfc roll. Very disappointed if they do

We may very well keep him, for the same result of the last two years, virtually zero games.

For me the main concern was that Caddy was contracted so we didn't need to trade him. Therfore if he was to leave then we should have looked to win a deal where I think we lost given our immediate aim to win a flag asap.

Having said that, if this opens the door for Cocky, Gregson or Lang to play a full season on a flank with a little bit of midfield time thrown in, then you'd back them in to kick 20+ goals to replace the Caddy forward half impact.

So yes I thought we could get more (much like the Bundy and then Stanley trades), even looking at upgrading our lower picks to better our position come draft day considering we had the upper hand.

Perhaps the salary savings puts us in a stronger position come this time next year. Judging by what just happened, every player is available for trade.

No matter how good Wells is,its a simple equation.
He has more too choose from with higher picks. Such as 15 over 24.
Increases the percentages of getting his targets and also getting a better player.
Not hard really.

I'm not saying pick 24 is better than 15 of cause not. He is downgrading for a quality player in tuoey. If the quality of players he believes around 24 is still very good or the second round will be the same depth as the lick 15, then it can very much end up a good win. You get two great players instead of one.

If he can Nab a great player with 24 while getting tuoey as well for the downgrade of picks. then it's a great get and we win from it.

A lot of drafts you will find the value of picks from 15-24 or even higher are considered very much roughly the same, ask any draft expert and they will tell you this.

I love how a few clubs who have to justify their decisions to their fan base are condescendingly talking to them about how they understand fans get "emotional" about certain things.
It's a cop out to justify weak negotiation by pretending to be "unemotional".
I think 98% of the anger isn't about losing a player we were "attached to" as Hocking claimed, but at the incomprehensible deal for a contracted player.

What about the fact that he's out of contract and is extremely unlikely to play another game? Oh yeah, plus the total and absolute silence about him since late in the season?

Thurlow is contracted, though. And he isn't 29 with a history of injuries, depression and upsetting his teammates.

Difference was that those players still had something to contribute. Does Mitch? Didn't look too crash-hot this year. Wasn't setting the world alight in 2015, either.

The way he was treated by the coaching staff suggests to me more than anything else that he's finished. Brought in for one game against Sydney, stunk it up, and then immediately dropped. Showed that they had very little faith in him, and that's usually not a good sign for a player's future.

Kind of funny how Scott said in 2015 that Clark was a long-term prospect in reference to his disappointing 2015 season. Not only was his 2016 much worse, but he's likely to be gone by the end of the year. What a disaster of a trade.

Been a couple of articles about Turlow recently talking about his recovery and what he is learning from Enright. Plus there is no risk that he's not going to be on the list.

This might be more relevant for the "losing faith in out recruitment" thread... but I had a chat with someone inside our recruitment team about the Caddy trade and I feel vindicated that the club has lost their way, and actually don't know as much as seemingly normal footy fans/have a complete difference in opinion with the entire Geelong supporting base. For instance, I'd say Pure Ownage knows more and would be better working at the club than some of the recruitment staff who are actually making decisions.

Basically when quizzed why he was traded the following was said:

  • Geelong was happy to take 27 initially even for Caddy but 'went for' 24 when it was available.
  • Don't rate Caddy highly internally (not in the 3 best mids was said)
  • Said Caddy has a poor attitude. I asked what do you mean, he said well, the coach believes he's a better forward than mid whereas Caddy thinks he's a better mid than forward. - this is particularly concerning as 99% of anyone with a footy brain knows he's better as a mid - not our coach. AND that doesn't mean his attitude is poor at all. I said he is much better than Blitz, why isn't he playing mid ahead of blitz, response was Caddy doesn't run defensively enough.
  • Caddy was actually happy to stay but Geelong preferred to get into the draft - in other words, Geelong rated a mid 20s pick above Caddy
  • Wanted more salary cap flexibility
  • I asked why didn't we hold out for more as a 20s pick is unders - response was along the lines of "nothing else was available and we think we can get a good player at 24"
Basically that was it. It shows that we willingly thought 24 > Caddy which is astounding and extraordinary. Caddy is clearly worth more especially as we need mature good players in this flag tilt. Basically the entire footy world cannot understand this trade, it is only our recruitment staff and no one else, that believe 24 > Caddy.
