If you haven't realised Max Gawn is part of there midfield. I'm defending the team because we only just lost without 4 key players and apparently our midfield got smashed. we must be doing something right, surely?
I don’t think our midfield got smashed, but our stoppages unit did.

Melbourne are extremely adept at handballing out stoppages to free players and we are very poor at defending it. We lost stoppage clearances by 50% or something and it wasn’t just because of Gawn.

By hand balling their way out of stoppages and refusing the hack kick down the line, our defence was put under far more pressure than usual - and I thought they held up very well despite this.

Shuey and Yeo racked up 21 tackles between them, so it’s not as if they weren’t trying to defend, but we just couldn’t stop them when we didn’t get first hands on it

The midfield setups were confusing at times. Lycett was contesting the ruck facing the wing but none of our midfielders were in a position to win the ball if Lycett tapped the ball that way. It made Gawns job so easy as he was trying to hit the ball the same direction, why wouldn't he? he actually had players waiting to take the ball.

IMO shuey is close to a grade, but not quite
Great when getting silver service taps (from nn) and kicking goals from centre bounces etc, but can’t remember him ever really standing out in a final (happy to be proven wrong there)
And his form since the hamstring IMO hasn’t been great
His finals performances last year were pretty good. :$

Yeah he's getting back to peak form.
Hopefully Kennedy back and darling plays next week we can hit our straps again.

Top four at least so we give ourselves a second chance.

Lycett looked like an amateur player to Gawn, Vardy gave a contest and held his own.
Melbourne had 22 blokes who worked hard all day and we had about 15.
Not a bad effort considering but bottom line is to win a flag no one gets a day off.
We got lots to do still.

We may as well finish 5th as we won’t go much further into finals

Rubbish
Mate we are second on the ladder
Most people (apart from me and some others) didn't pick us to finish top four.

We've overcome a lot of injuries and played over half the season without key personnel.

Let's enjoy the next how ever many weeks and even if we don't win the flag this year we can hit next year with a lot of experience pumped into players like Venables, Cole, Ryan, rioli, Waterman from here.

It's all up from here imo.

Where did I say that our midfield was shit ? Your words Pal not mine.

I said our midfield is not up to the same standard as most of the other teams in the top eight, get your fact in order before you come on here sprout stuff.

I would suggest that we our sitting second on the ladder, on the back of a very good seasons production from our backline and a very productive forward line thus far and a massive kick start ( 10 wins in a row ) when NN dominated.

If our midfield was in the same class of dominance as our back line and forward line then we would be sitting top.

We've all known our midfield hasn't been top line for a while now.
I think the recruitment team relied heavily on Nicnat so they focused more on kpp.

But I think gaff included we are getting there.
Gaff, Shuey, Yeo, redden. We can run rioli through there as well as Venables moving forward
It's a solid midfield that can get better.
Only way we can get someone like Patrick Cripps is if we bottom out or get a good trade with gaff if he goes.

But you are right our forwards and defence has been dominant more so than our midfield.

Sheed has to go, did a couple of good things but then about 50 bad to cancel them out.
He's not an AFL level midfielder.

Absolute nonsense.
I suppose you'll forgive the various times when Cole was outpointed and our defenders as a unit were caught out allowing Melbourne easy goals over the top?

What is with Yeo's slow starts? Seems to always take a quarter or two to get humming. We need him up and about straight away.

Back in 2015 his issue was that he would have 18-20 touches by half time and then end the game on 26-27.
Now the issue seems to be the opposite.

Melbourne were good, really good and their kicking inside 50 was slick and sharp. But they got the ball to the outside by throwing and dropping and holding half the time. Fair play to them, they seriously brought 'it' today. We fought hard to hang onto the dags

Godfather32 you are one of my favourite posters on here but you opinion of Sheed isn't fair tbh.
Stats a side, he looked better than all our mids except maybe Masten.
surprisingly for a bloke with poor tank, he was able to play 4 quarters of footy in a role that requires a strong tank. Thought Redden/Yeo/Shuey were average at times.

It wasn't the perfect game by him as he did make a couple skills and decision errors. That said i though his decision making overall was much better and at times he held on to the ball (instead of hacking it forward) and actually hit up target in a much more dangerous positions.

31 touches,1 goal, 506m gained (1st for MG), 9 score involvements (3rd) and 4 inside 50's today and id suspect Simmo would be happy with that considering he was covering Gaff's role for majority of the game.

Only 3 other Eagles players spent less time on ground than him as well.

Duggan on the other hand got quite a bit of it but used it very poorly i thought.

Turns out a few others agree with my post siren meltdown. Either that or pity likes.

I still cannot process today's performance. Melbourne outplayed us from minute 1. The most mentally pissweak team in the comp, without a single top 8 win all year, beats us, second, at our home ground. We nevet looked like winning, ever. Even when we hit the front, we pissed that away quick smart. Mitch Hannan is a little sneaky rat.

Also how shit was the umpiring today? So many non HTB calls. So so many. The TV at Varsity Bar is lucky I didn't throw a glass at it. Usually I'm over losses by now, but not this one. This one got to me. This one feels like it's a dagger in our finals run. Exploited how pissweak we can be at the drop of a hat.

Our leaders were average today. Hurn and Gov were well down and Yeo and Shuey struggled to bring a 4 quarter effort.

Sheed has a bog average game today. Pieces of brilliance (that left foot goal) mixed in with some absolute garbage (some shocking efforts).
You notice it significantly more if you attend the game in person and can witness him actively avoiding tackling a player (which would not be captured on TV footage).

This seems to be reflected pretty hard in the AFL player ratings.
Gawn BOG by a country mile, Hurn/Lycett/Gov/Sheed all underwhelming.

What Sheed did with the footy was by and large pretty good actually except for his last effort. His problem as usual is his complete inability to provide any defensive pressure. I would love to keep him in the WAFL until it gets fixed, as he isn’t a Priddis who could get away with it with absolute strengths in other areas. But with Gaff out, he is very much required. Ainsworth wouldn’t offer more, Partington most likely wouldn’t and he has a cross through his name anyway.

Still not sold on Duggan at all, actually hit some targets today but I dread having the ball in his hands in a crucial moment during a final. He was a deer in the headlights last year in the finals and that Collingwood game, and was god awful last week. Regularly lacks composure, often lacks execution.
