Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs. Demons - Rd 22, 2018

+ Vardy goes alright
+ Cripps had a good game, his work rate is insane and to fall hard on your head then get up and slot it
+ Willie

- umpire #16, sweet mother of god... I could go on for days. At one point he was directly in front of us watching the play (could see straight over his head so could see exactly what he saw) clear holding the man then push in back in the same play. That f***er didn't even flinch! The crowd was going absolutely bananas surely they have got a directive from the AFL about frees to the Eagles at home. The most blatant frees were play on today particularly when the crowd made noise about them.
- Lycett, 0 marks really?!
- Darling off really screwed our rotations - looked cooked fitness wise in junk time

I didnt tip us this time based on recent form.
When JD was concussed after a few minutes that was it given JK was out and we dint cover him at selection.
I felt we were only at about 80% with no edge and plenty
of errors because of low work rate to back each other up.

The positives - goofy fight back late and some players stepping up Masten, Shep and Cripps stood out.
Also I say was play the swans with kids up forwards (in Sydney) we have matured a lot since then and while Willie and Ryan were n it match winery's. they are developing well after a hand full of games.

Not sure if you guys are up for a read. I thought you broke them half way through the last. Game review up on The Mongrel Punt.

The article has the "Jamie Cripps - Aaron Vandenberg free kick " comments wrong. Whether the umpire was guessing or not, nobody knows(including the author). However, it is definitely a free kick to Cripps as Vandenberg contested with his eyes off the ball at the last seconds. Vandenberg had no right to hit Cripps in the air if his intention was not to mark the oncoming ball!
The video shows that Vandenberg knew that he was late for the ball contest and decided to protect himself with a defensive side turn with his eyes looking at the ground to ensure his safe landing. If he did not turn his eyes away, then it should not be a free kick.

Positive : we can technically lose the next 2 games and still win the flag with a run of just 3 wins, that would be hilarious

Good game of footy today. Off first quarter and 1 rotation down the difference.

Why does the AFL want to change the rules when all they need to do is pay holding the ball, the recent interpretation of prior opportunity allowing incorrect disposal is incredibly daft and so simple to fix, I feel like I am taking crazy pills!

That play by Sheed in the last quarter is damn near a droppable offence:

Game in the balance, we are up by a point, Dom gets the ball on the wing/half forward flank. Wants his left foot, get it. Has a ton of time to size up the option on his preferred. Turns it over directly to a Melbourne player. They rebound and get a goal down the other end. Momentum killed. Game over.

Its that type of stuff that simply isn't of AFL standard, much less from someone who was drafted as a top 10 pick.

I sit up in level 5 and to me it was an obvious free for tunneling. He took the body and Cripps is damn lucky he didn't break his neck. That is a clear free. Maybe the TV coverage didn't capture it well but I can't see how you'd argue against it.

Also, if the media are going down that path then there are 10-15 holding the man or holding the ball frees that weren't called. I don't like to believe in conspiracies but it seemed to me as if the umpires felt they had to put the whistle away in response the the hostile home crowd. Something changed after quarter time though and it got a bit better.

To stay as close as we did the whole game losing JD early against a pretty good team was a great effort. If you were to tell me we were playing for top 2 in the last game of the season I would have taken it with glee. We will throw the everything at the lions and I'm certain we will grab top 2.

Pretty disappointed with some individual efforts though (Dom and Lycett who is quickly becoming overrated) but we did ok overall.

I thought Melbourne played us very well and we still nearly bagged them sans JD.

Melbourne's forwards held a really good structure and they backed their mids and backmen to win contested situations. This meant they were able to move the ball really quickly into attack when they forced a turnover and put a lot of pressure on our backmen. Really good coaching from Goodwin - he backed in his players to their area of strength and setup the structure forward of the ball to allow them to capitalise.

At various times in the last few weeks it has definitely felt like opposition teams have known what we are going to do with the footy almost before our blokes do, which is helping them create more contests and outnumber us as the contest. Sides know they have to break down our kicking possession game or we will do them at a canter. Make no mistake, teams are putting a lot of work into us.

Finally calmed down after a close game which we nearly won. My thoughts:

Positives:
Our ability to counterpunch and control the game at times shows a will to impact the contest.
Considering we have lost our two best fwds we got very close to beating a team who's midfield is a grade way above ours, this is a compliment to the group. There is belief in the squad when it gets tough, we arent spineless or the flat-track bullies of 2016/2017
I thought Rioli, Ryan and Cripps were good.
Sheppard, Cole, Duggan all tried hard to prevent the Demons players from breaking through the 50
Yeo, Redden and Shuey put in
Lycett and Vardy tried hard against Gawn

Negatives:
Losing Darling in the first 10 minutes ruined our structure and left us without enough threats in the 50
Melbourne's flankers outworked Gov and Barrass in the 50 and consistenly ran into space cutting us up
Max Gawn and the Melbourne midfield crushed us at the clearances, Oliver was particularly damaging in the 2nd half
We werent able to read Gawn's taps
Sometimes we lacked the patience going into 50 to hit targets or make good decisions with our ball use - we regularly kicked to outnumbered forwards when we should run the ball and nullified their height in defensive 50
The Dee's midfielders were able to get off a sequence of quick handballs inside which allowed them to clear, spread and then kick into space

Conclusions:
If Darling plays then we need another tall target inside 50, Vardy's ok but another strong marking 3rd tall (Ah Chee, Waterman) is needed to stretch the Lions aerial ability
If Darling doesnt play, then play Mallen or Oallen as a forward with Waterman

Gawn smoked us.
Really made me miss Nic Nat.
JK is there and we win that I think.
Annoyed we lost to that bunch of campaigners.
Percentage could be real important now. Freo will fold like a cheap suit so we need to win. Shame cause itf would have been great to rest a few.

JK is a gun he averages 3 goals a game cannot be replaced. With Jk and Darling back we will cut teams up. We still had some 50 odd inside 50s and had 24 shots a goals

Yeah I feel that aswell. They are very similar in style. Gawn is easily the best ruck in the comp right now.

Gawn and Grundy are both superb ruckmen. They are panels in front of every other ruckman on AFL lists. It was brilliant watching a guy like Gawn at the top of his field perform yesterday. Nicnat would of competed with him at the tap outs but after that would also of been run a merry dance. Not since Cox have we seen this type of ruckman.

After reading your reply, I am a bit confused!
Do you use "how you'd argue against it." to mean "how the author/the article would argue against it."?
Actually the TV captured it well enough to support our arguement that Vandenburg did move his eyes away from the ball just before the contest.
As we all agreed, it was and should be a free kick awareded to Cripps. The author got it very wrong on this .
I think we are on the same page.

Was always going to happen v the Dees this - they are a very good contested side.
I wonder if Gaff will be the Dees number one priority the years draft...he would fit in perfectly for the Dees since they are already a very good contested team...would strengthen them even more...good team across all the lines.

We better do. It is too much to lose:
1. Economic loss of the losing one home final.
2. Diminished chance of winning the flag.
Brisbane have been admirable this year, but they struggled to get over GC. They'll be thinking about the beers and strippers in Vegas, whereas our guy will be thinking about the fact they can avoid travelling for the next 4 weeks. Way too much to play for this week, they'll be fired up.
