Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Port Adelaide

It was 17-4 last week. Response from coaching staff was to drop the hardest tacking forward half player.

Negatives -

  • Poor coaching.
  • JK looking cooked.
  • Hurn also looking cooked.
  • Team too tall. Didn't like the Waterman selection.
  • Team too slow. Port exposed the slow leg speed of our players.
  • Senior players not doing enough and living off credit in the bank.
  • Yeo concussed.
  • Ryan and Rioli down on confidence. Pretty much little to no impact. Too lazy.
  • We're clearly going to win the spoon again if this keeps up.
  • Unfortunately players are being selected due to credits in the bank.
  • Accuracy off than normal.
  • Waterman missing again. No doubt a class above the WAFL but goes missing too often at AFL level.
  • Foley down on form.
  • Zone defense failing over and over again. Failure to press.
  • Slow ball movement again allowing Port to setup.
  • Williams a liability with his kicking and gets bullied in the ruck contests. Not liking how he's been developed.

Meh =

= Naish tried but wasn't damaging.
= I felt Shuey was average but not damaging. Lacks leadership qualities to bring the team over the line. Not the type of leader you'd be willing to die for.
= Strnadica showed some promise.
= Duggan was alright.

Positives +

  • Barrass taking those intercept marks in the absence of Gov. Stopped us from losing by more than 100 points.
  • Kelly our best mid. Showed class and he's the only one to care.
  • Potential for the number one pick.
  • West the only one to provide effort in a team lacking work rate.
  • Darling tried and was pretty good with the lack of supply coming in.
  • Witherden can hold his head high, kept trying to rebound and worked hard too in defense.

Final Thoughts.

In my predictions thread I had Port beating us by 57 points if nothing changes. We only scored those three goals in the final term because Port took off their foot off the pedal just like Sydney did last week. They're a much better side but Hinkley before playing us played with stale slow ball moving tactics like we did and refused to take the game on hence the losses and being 0-5 coming into the match. In reality if Hinkley attacked the corridor and used his teams strengths then I can see Port be 3-2 or even 4-1 coming into the match whereas we only won because we gotten very lucky against Collingwood who failed to capitalize on their superior entries plus missing shots that would've gotten them ahead and we just happened to be very accurate.

Hayes had a field day in the ruck and constantly gave Port's mids first use. Yes Nic Nat is a liability around the ground but with his tap accuracy and physicality our mids would've at least broke even in the middle.

Well if nothing changes for the rest of the season such as slow ball movement, zone defense, midfielder and forwards playing behind the ball, going down the line, not using the corridor as much, playing too tall and selecting out of form players due to the amount of credits then I can see the team finishing with 2 wins 0 draws and 20 losses like Carlton in 2018 (they go Sam Walsh in the draft) and Freo in 2001. At least we can get a top pick in the draft and draft a gun mid and hopefully NOT a KPP or a ruck.

Headlines says it all.....

Absolutely dominant’ Port get first win as ‘diabolical’ Eagles fall to new low....

I am legitimately curious to see what generic BS Simpson trots out at his press conference

We're still talking about effort... just like the last two years... from a professional sporting club.🙄

Too many young players on a 10 year plan to make it. They will never get there. We need to replace XON, West, Waterman, Williams, Jones, Edwards, Foley, Witherden, and a few others.

Disagree. I’d be putting games into these fringe players.

We know what we get with our name players i.e. less and less. Pick the ones who show some pride and effort. Drop the lazy ones to the WAFL.

I hope I’m wrong but I have a suspicion that not many of the fringe players are going to be 150 game players but let’s give them a good go. At least at season end we can then make really informed decisions on who stays and who goes.

And by concentrating on them could it be worse than what we’re seeing now?

I find it funny when people talk about speed and fitness.

Shuey was jogging today, so was Ryan. Two of our quickest players. Petruccelle is arguably top 5 in the comp for pace, can't remember the last time he ran someone down. Darling used to get 4 tackles a game as a young player. Down below 2 now.

David King highlighted a couple of efforts from Devon Smith and Dylan Shiel the other night as symptomatic of how poor Essendon were. Could have a field day doing this to the WC/Port game.

Not sure there is a footy show with a long enough time slot to show all of our jogging efforts.

Also, this got brought up last week on fox footy and its obvious watching the game live: Duggan is getting lost in the zone

He either
i) doesn't know who his direct opponent is
ii) is standing in the wrong position
iii) both

Time and time again he was poorly positioned which led to scoring chains resulting in goals

Agree.

Many won't make it, but we now have the opportunity to bring forward our insights into those players by a whole season (give or take).

There should be opportunities to get these guys into the side, and at times rotate them (either as they tire, or as injuries or form dictate).

Hurn, JK and even Shuey & Redden need to rotate in and out of the side and/or play positions they don't prefer (instead of playing the younger guys out of position).

Also, if we don't start to see some sort of semblance of a new game plan at some stage then Simpson won't last the season.

That is incredible. He's in his 8th season and has played in defence for most of it. A zone isn't hard either, you just position yourself in relation to team mates.

The club needs to work out what they are doing with Waterman. I dont think he is ever going to fit with what we are doing and should be trade bait.
He is a dud with no trade value. I think he is getting a game as the cupboard is very bare. I laugh whe people on here see him as a FF

Coughing up some of the worst performances in the history of the club on a weekly basis now.

-31 inside 50s
-34 contested possessions
-70 score involvements
-76 disposals
-1416 metres gained

Fitness looks to be at borderline ammos level at the moment. Getting thrashed because players aren't able to get to repeat contests, which gives the opposition easy outnumberings in their favour every time the ball does come out.

Who knows what happened during the offseason, but conditioning levels have plummeted this season (from what had to be said was a rather low base last year in comparison to the majority of the competition).

soreness-homer-simpson.gif

Problem is, systemic fitness issues like this cannot be addressed overnight and will continue to dog the club throughout the season.

And that is not even mentioning the level of farce that has become the club's tactical setup and approach.

Back half team playing a game that rewards pressure in the forward half. Tackles inside 50 over the last two matches are 7-45.

So let's sum it up:
  • can't run
  • can't contest
  • disposal and decision-making is falling apart as players exhaust early
  • defensive accountability is shot as players can't keep with their opponents
  • tactical approach impedes ball movement that could punish the opponent when they make a mistake
  • anchored deep defence invites opposition pressure in areas where turnovers equal goals
  • and none of that is going to change anytime soon, regardless of who is on the ground.

Forget the season, anything outside of bottom 4 is laughable.

I'm worried about beyond that. The club continuing to look the other way on these performances will only develop a negative culture that will take several more years to shake off.

Simpson has until the start of June. Six matches [Richmond, Brisbane, Melbourne, GWS, Bulldogs, Adelaide] to save himself and turn it around. Based on evidence to date, I don't expect he will. A 1-11 record at the bye and the club will be forced to act.

Until then, I expect more of the same as today.

That's what he is though. He was a key forward as a junior and at WAFL level. Whether he is good enough at AFL level is another story. He had interest from other clubs last year but apparently didn't want to leave.
