Autopsy Positives and Negatives vs Sydney

How much of it was effort and how much of it was just coming up against a more well oiled side? We’ve been cut open the same way all year. Teams flood our forward 50 then race us back to goal and we can’t keep up. It’s just the sides we’ve played so far have been sloppy and haven’t made us pay enough. Tonight we played a decent side who made every single one count.

Lack of preseason in our old legs and lack of playing time together is costing us again. But most fans would rather just continually harp on about how bad our coaching is and how much effort we lack. That could still be the case but I feel like it’s harsh to judge this seasons results.

We’d be f*cked in the arse harder if we tried to go corridor against good sides. We just lack the run to firstly create the space and then secondly to keep the ball moving or half a contest if we turn it over in the middle.

No worries. Whats the excuse for last year and the year priors pathetic efforts?

My summary goes like this - our best plyers are either unavailable, underdone or drowning.

Yeo, Shuey, and Kelly's out put would've been fine if one of them was coming back, we just don't have that luxury.

People are singing praises of B Grade payers and then complaining about B Grad results. Reality is if we get anything like our best list back, Dixon, Naish, Hough, O'Neill, Edwards, Williams and West will be nowhere near selection.

We're not a premiership side, nowhere near it. We're also not a side that should be down 49-0 to Sydney.

The problem for mine wasn't our forwards (small or tall). 29 inside 50s for a match means none of them would do stuff all.
We had ZERO pressure through the middle of the ground or two way.

I suspect Simmo told Naish not to bother going through the middle in the second half exactly because the rest of the team were doing SFA through the middle or spreading to give him options.

Basically everyone was a passenger apart from a couple of players.

Hopefully some of those guys that came back have gotten some rust out of the system and perform a bit better next week.

He sounds completely cooked to be honest.

Excuse? I don’t think we’ve had our first choice midfield at full tilt for 2-3 years. The forward and backs are always going to look horrendous if we’re getting bullied in the middle.

Midfield depth is shocking sure, that’s another argument, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that we have had our two best and most dynamic players missing for large periods of time with no consistency. How are we supposed to compete with B grade role players leading the midfield? We’ve always been very reliant on our top end, but show me a side that isn’t.

I’d imagine coaching would be a very difficult job if you’re losing a couple of quality players weekly for 2 seasons straight. How can you implement any sort of gameplan when team selection day is just plugging holes and finding fit players

Glad I had people over so was not able to comment.

As much as I want to throw the boots in on the credits returning (and I did pregame) who came in or out didn't really matter, bar Gov, he would have limited the damage.

Simply put, we are a bottom 4 team and have been for nearly a year now. Sydney are on a whole other level to us.

It gets to me, some of the deluded posters, that think one win and we are right back into premiership mode. It was a long time ago, let it go.

I like Kelly, and he'd be the icing on the cake in a strong midfield that is challenging. He's completely the wrong player for us. That trade has set us back years. And shame on the club for having their heads stuck in the sand, for completely misreading the list.

They still are misreading the list, living in a cloud cuckoo fantasy land.

I still enjoy watching my team and look for little sparks of brilliance from the young guys. The vast majority of the older players are cooked and have been for a very long time.

Cheers and be nice to each other. It's easy for fans to turn on each other after a night like tonight.

REBUILD.

Someone smarter than me can do a better job but I swear there's a parody song based on The Long and Winding Road there somewhere:

The long kick to the right
That goes out to a pack
Will never disappear
I've seen that kick before
It always leads us here
Leads us to a pack

Gotta get a Jack (instead of pack) in there at some point cos the big dopey campaigner is usually the "target" waving a single arm out in the middle of three opponents.

You saw a side that isn’t tonight…. Unless you consider warner, bell, mills, campbell, goulden, hayward, florent and peter bloody ladhams all a grade players…

Longmire had the guts to make kennedy sub because the game has passed him by…
Can you imagine Simpson even having the guts to do that to shuey… no we make him captain so he can free ride in and out of the side

+ Alright, so let's rip off the goddamn band-aid. It's now obvious that JK and Hurn, and probably even Darling, Gaff, Cripps, Shuey and Redden shouldn't be getting games ahead of the kids.

Yep, we want to put our best side out there every week. But the evidence is becoming indisputable that the heroes of 2018 ain't it anymore. Time to burn it down and start again.
The heroes were no more in 2019. Turning it on when they felt like it. Playing for a quarter and scraping in for a win. It was blatantly obvious what was happening back then (a side on the decline and a side that didn't give a truck anymore)

Match committee somehow cannot still comprehend that bringing multiple underdone players in at the same time doesn't end up working.

Oh, and how did Rotham get selected on the back of his poor performances this season?

Bizzare calls all over.
The worst thing is that Simmo talked about the risk in at least two media conferences in the last week. Specifically said they had stuffed it up last year against the Bulldogs, then the same thing happened tonight.

It was so obvious at the game that we could not keep up with Sydney. It was embarrassing.

They really need to drop a couple of the "stars" that underperformed. Looking at the stats, one of Yeo or Kelly should be going back to the WAFL next week and having to force their way in.

Why not?

We have McGovern, Naitanui, Sheed, Gaff, Allen to come back. Cole too I guess but he's not a difference maker. You'd expect all those guys to come back in, others no guarantee.

We've got a couple of players who won't feature next year, and a few others who don't deserve their names inked into the 22 each week. Last year Langdon, Petruccelle, Waterman, Redden, Nelson, Rotham all played 14+ games. It's no knock on Redden who has been a good player for a long time but he is 32 and a possible retiree.

With a full squad to pick from then Edwards and Dixon and/or Williams probably miss out, but if we're dropping guys like Naish and O'Neill who are actually performing then we'll go nowhere faster than we already are. Our leading tackler prior to tonight was SPS (!) who had only played 3 games. It's now Foley. Naitanui is #1 in clearances and contested possessions, now out for half the season. 2-4 in clearances are Rioli (forward), Redden, O'Neill (dropped) and Jones who Simmo insists on playing forward when he isn't dropped. I fully expect Jones to be out next week.

If we are being realistic then we aren't a good team and therefore just picking guys because they were good 4 years ago doesn't cut it. Whether it's Gaff, Darling, Hurn (sad face) or guys like Petruccelle and Langdon none of these players need to stay in the 22 is younger players are outperforming them. The COVID/injury crisis has forced us to actually give players a run who would otherwise be sitting around on their arses waiting for the WAFL to start.

Melbourne went into the GF with Melksham and Hunt (and Chandler) as emergencies. Nathan Jones knew coming back from injury he wasn't best 22 and retired and didn't travel to WA as his wife was having twins. They backed in Bowey, Jordon, Sparrow etc. because that's who was in the team and winning them games. Do people inside WC admit that Naish has been our best performed mid this year?

Look, I’m not gunna read 6 pages of negatives, cause I’m negative enough, so I don’t know if this is has been covered, but f**k me, something has to be done about the dropping the ball/incorrect disposal/blatant throws.

It’s been happening for years, across many teams, and it’s a blight on the game and the fault of the administrators and law makers and those who instruct the umpires.

So many times tonight, the Swans just flat out threw the ball, with an umpire right there, and it doesn’t get paid.

No way in hell do we win that game, but we’d be slightly more competitive if some of those blatant throws get called before the ball flies into the swans forward 50 for the 60th time. It’s absolutely infuriating, and makes me hate the game even more these days than I already do.

I pretty much watch the eagles games when I go to the game, and that’s it. I hardly watch away games cause the commentary is putrid and I get way too pissed off with everything, and I never watch any other games cause the state of the game is terrible and it’s been completely ruined.

I’ve gone full old man yells at cloud, but I’m fed up with this blatant cheating and the game is a shadow of what it used to be in the days I was a kid (the 90s) when I lived and breathed AFL. Maybe I’ve grown up, but it’s sad that I’m on the verge of giving it away all together and just focussing on other sports.

Lots I could say, but what would be the point?
I'll just leave this here: In all the very worst years you can ever think of for the Eagles; Later Worsfold years, Judge years and anything else you want to throw out there since our inception and entry into the AFL. We have never, ever in our history, gone completely scoreless in the first quarter at home, EVER. Not even during any of the deepest and darkest hours of our history.
On a Friday night, with as many All Australian players as we have on our list, regardless of anything else the coach says or thinks regarding excuses, after 2019, 20, and 21 being busts with a bloody talented list, we throw this up in '22. I honestly don't know this club anymore. There is resilience and there is outright pig headed, under-performing stupidity. This is not a coach issue alone, some grave football department mismanagement.
